The UK has failed #Palestine and international law by abstaining in the UN vote on Jerusalem today, the Palestinian Mission to the UK said in a statement. Thread: [1/6]
The UN resolution on the status of Jerusalem passed overwhelmingly today. It reiterates the international legal position on the status of East Jerusalem as an occupied city and the importance of respecting the Status Quo Understanding, especially at the Haram Al Sharif. [2/6]
Unfortunately, the UK, for the first time, opted to abstain, thus deviating from international legitimacy. Jerusalem is the key to such a two-state outcome which has historically been strongly supported by the UK and the international community more widely. [3/6]
H. E. Ambassador @hzomlot said: “By changing its vote, combined with recent retrograde and one-sided steps, the UK government is walking away from peace-making in the Middle East and from international legality."[4/6]
@hzomlot Ambassador @hzomlot said: “Such a choice sends the wrong message at the wrong time to the Israeli side, which appears to be adamant on finishing off what is left of the prospects for a two-state outcome." [5/6]
@hzomlot “This is not just a bad day for peace in the Middle East. It is a bad day for the UK, its international standing and role in the region,” Ambassador @hzomlot added. [6/6]

The announcement by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a letter to @CFoI that the UK opposes the ICC #Palestine probe is as regretable as it is problematic. Here is why: ⤵️
@CFoI The letter is a contradiction of international law as well Britain's own policy. It subverts the rules-based global order. And it sets back efforts to secure a lasting and just peace in #Palestine.
@CFoI There is no other interpretation of a statement that gives carte blanche to Israel to continue its illegal settlement project in occupied territory, and signals to Israel that no matter its actions, it will not be held to account.
H. E. Ambassador @hzomlot held a virtual meeting today with the Right Honourable Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons. More details in the thread⬇️⬇️

Dr Zomlot briefed Sir Lindsay on the situation on the ground in Palestine and impressed upon him the urgency of efforts to stop Israel’s settlement project and salvage the two-state solution.
He urged the UK speaker to ensure the presence of a UK role in the peace process, based on international resolutions and the long-standing UK positions.
In his statement at today's Arab FMs meeting, Foreign Minister Dr Riad Malki calls on Arab nations to take a stand against unilateral #Israel-UAE deal for violating Arab Peace Initiative. Thread ⤵️
Dr Malki said the #israeluaedeal violated the Arab consensus normalisation with #Israel before ending its occupation of the Palestinian territories, warning this could create a slippery slope towards similar initiatives with regards to other occupied Arab territories
Dr Malki added that the #israeluaedeal comes as the Palestinians were hit by punitive suspension of aid by some Arab states, a move for which the US administration brazenly took credit, in addition to the ongoing disposession and various forms of pressure by the Israeli occupier.
Happening Now: President Mahmoud Abbas delivers Palestine's response to Trump's plan at the UN Security Council: webtv.un.org/live-now/watch…
I came today backed by the positions of the Arab League, African Union and Organisation of Islamic Corporation, in addition to statements by the EU, Russia and China as well as the UN
The US plan deligitimised the rightful Palestinian demands for having a state and legitimised the settlements and the annexation of Palestinian land, President Abbas adds
Statement by Arab League foreign ministers following emergency session totally rejects Trump's peace plan and calls on US administration to abide by internationally-acknowledged terms of reference for peace negotiations. Thread:
The statement affirmed East #Jerusalem as a capital of the State of #Palestine, the right of the State of Palestine to exercise sovereignty on all its territories occupied in 1967, and on its air space, territorial waters, natural resources and borders
The Arab FMs rejected the "Deal of the Century". It doesn't meet the minimum requirements of the Palestinians and violates all previous agreed terms of reference upon which negotiations were held as well as int'l law. They called on Trump's administration to abide by these terms.
