3) San Francisco Police Sgt. Matt Parra says DA’s Office is too lenient on criminals.
He heads a team of undercover cops tasked w/ tackling car-break-ins in SF’s hardest hit areas. He says 1 out of 2 people his team arrests is someone they’ve recently arrested for similar crimes.
4) San Francisco DA @chesaboudin recently held a press event to explain how he’s combating crime.
So we asked him directly about the criticism his office is facing from top police officials.
Mr. Boudin, however, just stood there silently. He never answered.
5) Sources at @SFPD as well as current & former prosecutors at SF District Attorney’s Office tell us even when thieves are caught & convicted for car break-ins, most — if not all —are given plea deals that allow them to spend only a few days or even just a couple of hrs in jail.
6) Regardless of who is to blame, one thing is certain — all the reasons / excuses from law enforcement don’t actually help the long-time San Franciscan who had their car burglarized for the umpteenth time, or the tourist who lost their luggage while off sightseeing.
7) Tourism rates are already ⬇️ b/c the pandemic, so additional crime concerns aren’t likely to help things.
There’s a LOT to unpack here, so check out our series of stories & digital extras.

🧵 1) Hit-and-run in San Francisco hurls pedestrian into the air, tossing her onto path of oncoming driverless Cruise car, which then runs her over.
Officials couldn't find witnesses, but Cruise car had cameras rolling.
I got access to the video. Here's what I saw.
@nbcbayarea
2) Accident happened at about 9:30pm Monday near 5th & Market streets in downtown SF. Driverless Cruise vehicle & other sedan were traveling side-by-side, southbound on 5th St, according to video recorded by Cruise car that was later shown to me. nbcbayarea.com/news/local/san…
3) The roughly 20 second clip showed the entirety of the accident as well as the moments leading up to it. The video begins with both vehicles stopped at a red light. Once the traffic light turns green, both vehicles continue south along Fifth Street.
🧵 2/ We were the first today to obtain the video & audio evidence used in the criminal case against David DePape. Now that it's out, let's talk about all that we know regarding that gruesome attack against Paul Pelosi, husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
I’m inside the San Francisco courtroom for David DeDape’s preliminary hearing - the man accused of breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home and beating her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.
1/ #Scoop: Two major law enforcement agencies investigating #Pelosi attack can't agree on who opened the door once San Francisco police arrived:
Dept. of Justice:
"The 2 officers opened the door..."
SF DA's Office:
"Mr. Pelosi opened the door with his left hand..." @nbcbayarea
2/ A source familiar w/ the investigation, who personally watched the police body camera video, tells us SF DA's office got it right, adding that the video shows police knocking the door, then backing away. Door then opens from the inside and you can see Paul Pelosi opening it.
3/ Does who opened the door matter? We have no reason to believe it does, but with so many conspiracy theories already swirling online, contradicting stories from investigators are only fueling falsehoods.
DOJ & DA's office did not respond to our request for comment.
🧵#Exclusive#Scoop 1/ San Francisco DA Brooke Jenkins sat down w/ us for a wide-ringing, one-on-one interview, her first since the election.
We spoke about the criticism she's facing, the Paul Pelosi attack, & her plans to end "lawlessness."
2/ Jenkins says as DA, "all crime" is now considered illegal in San Francisco.
She says her predecessor Chesa Boudin (recalled by voters in June) ordered staff not to pursue charges for quality of life crimes (i.e. graffiti), resisting arrest, & certain assaults against cops.
3/ We contacted former District Attorney Chesa Boudin to get his response to Jenkins' criticism of his office.
