13 civilians have been killed by security forces in Nagaland’s Mon district. The men were daily wage labourers.#Nagaland 1/n
Army’s 3 Corps in Dimapur has issued a statement owning responsibility for the killings. Court of Inquiry has been ordered. Govt has ordered an SIT probe. 2/n
The labourers were returning home to Oting village from a coal mine, about 15 kilometres away in Tiru when they were attacked by security forces. #Nagaland 3/n
The labourers typically come home from the mine on Saturday and spend time with their families before returning back to work. 4/n
The troops had planned an operation against members of the banned NSCN-Khaplang-YA, based on as their statement says “credible intelligence inputs about movement of insurgents” 5/n
The input was specific according to two officers in the area—of specific movement in a particular vehicle, following which the area was cordoned off. It is believed that the local coal miners were in a similar vehicle and did not stop—when the troops fired. 6/n
Family members of the deceased miners have so far refused to accept their bodies. A few tribes have withdrawn from the annual Hornbill festival on at Kisama. 7/n
Black flags at Hornbill festival. Two vehicles of security forces were torched by villagers. One soldier has succumbed to injuries. 8/n
A reminder Nagaland is under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act #AFSPA
“The nearer one comes to a war zone, the less one hears of a grand strategy”—Steinbeck’s words hold particularly true for #Nagaland, Manipur, where the Army shares a tense, volatile, tricky space and holds together a peace framework that no one has a clue about.
For years it has struggled to disentangling the overground & the underground—and Saturday’s incident points to among other things the lack of credible intelligence. Everyone loves a good insurgency.

Dispatches from Shiv Vihar that has become a ghostly town of sorts. Lane after lane has emptied out. Houses torched. Residents (Muslims) have run away with nothing but just clothes on their back. #DelhiRiot2020
In the lane (at the start of the video) we met Nazr Mohd, govt school teacher, who had come to see his house and take a few clothes. His hands were shaking as he spoke to us. “Sarkar ne kaha hai sab teachers ko kaam par aana hai”
We met Head constable Mohd Irfan, resident of Shiv Vihar who was wearing borrowed clothes. He called Delhi Police helpline 100 atleast 35 times along with senior police officials. They were rescued 9 hours later, as fires, stone pelting, cylinder blasts raged around them.
WHO BURNS A SCHOOL? (Part 1-read if you have patience)
On 25th Feb, about 4pm a crowd of about 250-300 (numbers grow as attack progresses) enter the Arun Senior Sec School in Brijpuri. Eyewitnesses: they came via the terrace & from the side of the Farooqiya Masjid.
They were armed with stones, lathis, crude bombs, inflammable material. The school was locked, the lone watchman ran away.
In the attack that went on for 2-3 hours (& spread), school’s main office was reduced to ashes, library burnt, toilets vandalized, a school bus + two cards outside charred. Answer sheets, admit cards, all reduced to ashes.
A thread of my despatches from Brijpuri, Chandbagh follow but for starters: two images—one from the Arun Modern Public School, the other from the madarsa at the Farooqiya Jama Masjid just metres away.
38-year-old Kishwar Jahan had a clear view of the Brijpuri mosque from her house. “Jab Police ko dekha tha to tasalli ho gayi thee”. But they allowed the men with stones and lathis to ente the mosque. The police aimed the gun at us (indicating go inside)
Scenes from the Brijpuri Farooqiya mosque where multiple eyewitnesses allege—police broke the CCTV camera, men with stones and crude bombs entered the madarsa. The anti-NRC/CAA protest outside this lane was shut down. The Imam is believed to be in critical condition
Have spent part of day in some of the worst riot-affected areas of north east delhi, neighbourhoods of Chandbagh, Moonga Nagar, Mustafabad—some mixed neighbourhoods. The extent of the damage is far worse than expected.
Some very serious allegations being level led against AAP’s councillor #TahirHussain who is alleged to have mobilised a mob and orchestrated large scale violence with stones and petrol mobs from the terrace.
Here is a gentleman, an eyewitness I spoke to along with @rahulpandita who speaks about the role of #TahirHussain and the violence that was being perpetrated from that terrace.
Got back to Delhi after spending 5 days in Kashmir. I could not access any internet but for a few min last night. On return I am surprised to see the copious amount of commentary on fellow journalists who did manage access. #thread 1/n
No journalist, even those who may be doing shoddy work are roaming around in bullet proof cars. They are having to use every bit of ingenuity in what is an extremely sensitive, complex and tough story to report. 2/n
Access is not journalism and if the access is defining their journalism (and it is for some) call them out, but this mob approach and undermining everyone who is managing to send their stories out is frankly a case of sour grapes. 3/n
