Dispatches from Shiv Vihar that has become a ghostly town of sorts. Lane after lane has emptied out. Houses torched. Residents (Muslims) have run away with nothing but just clothes on their back. #DelhiRiot2020
In the lane (at the start of the video) we met Nazr Mohd, govt school teacher, who had come to see his house and take a few clothes. His hands were shaking as he spoke to us. “Sarkar ne kaha hai sab teachers ko kaam par aana hai”
We met Head constable Mohd Irfan, resident of Shiv Vihar who was wearing borrowed clothes. He called Delhi Police helpline 100 atleast 35 times along with senior police officials. They were rescued 9 hours later, as fires, stone pelting, cylinder blasts raged around them.
When the full story of the Delhi riots will be written, the total collapse of helpline 100 will be a big part. Number unavailable, calls unanswered, bland responses like “Bahot calls aa rahi hain”, “aapke Vidhayak ne kaha hai sab theek hai”
These scenes scattered across the entire stretch of Shiv Vihar.
Residents of one by-lane in Shiv Vihar have barricaded their entrance. 8 Hindu houses in this lane. Residents told me they used the code word—Jai Shri Ram, sab apne hai—to save everybody. Our Muslim neighbours would have used their code if that crowd came.
