Before I dive into this know that:
- I'm tech-optimistic
- Freedom is everything
- Fiat money will go to zero
- I believe in a decentralized future
- Violence & coercion shouldn't be government tools
1. What is the Metaverse again?
Think of the Metaverse as a virtual online environment where people live, work, play (and watch) to earn.
The future will be a battle between centralized versus decentralized alternatives.
So let's see how this reality will affect you:
2. The centralized will centralize.
Remember when governments tried to crack down on P2P mp3 downloading?
Remember when governments tried to crack down on torrents?
Remember when governments tried to f*ck with net neutrality?
Always trying to centralize power.
3. Anti-freedom efforts like this, when you zoom out, have proven pretty much useless and they will continue to be.
Government ft. Big Tech = never in YOUR best interest. Remember that.
It's about your data.
It's about your taxes.
It's about your 'allegiance' to them.
4. Your location will be meaningless.
How do you think governments have always been able to maintain their monopoly on power?
Location. Geography.
They know where you are.
They know where you work.
They now know where you relax too.
5. Your location determines your taxes and your laws in the old world.
Why?
Because most of us can't just get up and leave to another country.
That means we either accept these laws or we are confronted with the government's monopoly on violence (police, fines, jail, etc.).
6. As we slowly but surely build out the (decentralized) Metaverse your physical location becomes less and less important.
Blockchain tech allows you to transact from anywhere in the world, at any time, with anyone quasi anonymously.
A government's nightmare.
7. Pay taxes where you want.
Given our governments' very questionable financial track records it's only normal a lot of people have 'issues' with the concept of taxation.
People don't have issues covering basic services.
They have issues with inefficiency and corruption.
8. The issue of taxation ties back to location though.
The simple fact they always know where you work, live, and hang out allows them to easily tax you.
As our society has become more digital and governments/centralized companies have ALL our data it's gotten even easier.
9. The metaverse is ushering in an era where more and more professional activities will take place in this virtual realm.
It makes sense to pay taxes in New York if you live and work in New York.
What do you do when you make your money online, in a decentralized metaverse?
10. It's simple. You'll pay taxes to the Metaverse where you earn your money.
You'll also be able to see exactly where your tax money is going, due to the blockchain's transparency.
As the government's ability to tax us diminishes, their control over us will decrease as well.
11. Every year a bigger portion of economic activity will start taking place in these virtual worlds.
Every year our governments will struggle more and more trying to track what exactly people are doing.
This decentralized future will be free of data-tracking and surveillance.
12. You will earn to play.
Don't just dismiss it as gaming.
Think of it as traveling somewhere (that just happens to be in virtual gaming context) where you go to earn money.
Why?
Because automation and robotics will continue to replace our jobs so we look for alternatives.
13. What will you do in a Play-to-earn economy?
You can sell insurance, be a security guard, gather resources, be an explorer, a scientist, whatever.
The whole economy will be 'gamified' & NFT-driven.
Millions & eventually billions will enter the metaverse financial systems.
14. The new world eliminates the middlemen.
Every single asset, both on- and offline, will be tokenized through NFTs which will make it the single biggest market of the world AND democratize them.
Entertainment, real estate, brands, games, etc.
Goodbye middlemen.
15. Freedom to choose.
As I previously mentioned, we haven't had the freedom to just move and work wherever we please. Yet.
The Metaverse will be the first time all of us will have options to choose from.
This will cause people to leave their physical jobs.
16. Dystopian vibes you say?
Ask yourself "is 40 years of sitting in a car for 2-3 hours just to commute to a job you hate" really better?
In the future, we will see people make professional decisions that benefit THEM, not their employers.
17. The opportunities today are there and we're already seeing thousands of people make a living in these play-to-earn games.
Fast-forward a couple of years and these opportunities will have grown exponentially.
While considered 'odd' today, it will be the norm within years.
18. Optionality will be at the very core of the Metaverse.
Not just in the professional realm.
It will take over governance as well as people grow used to opting to 'transact' under rules they voluntarily accepted.
Coercion will not be tolerated.
19. These trends will almost 'force' governments to compete for people to stay loyal to them.
After centuries of using force and coercion they now find themselves having to appease and please their subjects.
I don't see it. That's just me though.
What do you think?
Recap:
- Centralized forces will do what they do
- Your location will start mattering less
- Get taxed where you transact
- The Metaverse brings optionality
