#TurkishDrones 1/6 In its decade of strategic partnership with Somalia, Turkey has taken very meticulous steps that proved helpful to both counties. I am just not sure about this latest for these reasons: 👇
2/6 First: These drones could not have been delivered at a worse time [gov’t lacks domestic legitimacy, perilous tension between central gov’t & some federal states, armed opposition groups, wide spread clan tension]
3/6 Second: Lack of institutions of checks and balances [Parliament is practically defunct. There is no robust military command & control. No viable judiciary system. No rule of law]
4/6 Third: Rampant systemic corruption that renders loyalty to the nation merely a cheap banner.
5/6 Fourth: This would violate the UN arms embargo.
6/6 Fifth: Turkey will be seen as taking one side or another in the ongoing dirty contest to power.
Somalia Conference and Rivalry of Civilizations 1/6 "Contrary to the common perception, Somalia is perhaps the most important political theatre in the 21st century as it is where geopolitics, geoeconomic and georeligious dynamics intersect and interplay.
2/6 And it is where two old empires (British and Turkish) are positioning themselves for global influence. Meanwhile, the curtains are slowly opening to unveil the covert rivalry of civilizations, instead of the clichéd clash.
3/6 ....At the end of the day, what tips the scale and wins the hearts and minds of people are the tangible direct services provided to them at their most dire moment. Everything else is considered a costly symbolism.
Extremism...is the biggest problem facing the world.
Extremism has its stereotypical and its professionally sanitized version. It has the likes of #AlQaeda and #AlShabab on one hand and the Neocons and Right Wing Extremists on the other.
2/5
It has the militant religious fanatics as well as material and power-driven secular humanists and in between who consider violence as the first or the only option to problem-solving.
3/5 While the stereotypical one's intention, anger, hate, and tools of war are often explicit and are belligerently overt in their claim to culpability, the professionally sanitized ones' are more clever, covert, and stealthy in their operations.
1/14
While #nationalism is often romanticized by the average person via artificial values such as blind love of country, flag, anthem, enlightened nationalism is based on the profound understanding of the concept of citizenship & those citizen’s interdependence & common destiny.
2/14
It cultivates comprehensive appreciation of the values that unite us. It inspires the individual to take an active role in improving his or her country’s condition.
3/14
Enlightened nationalism is seldom emotional or reactionary. It is the sum of the commitment of good citizens standing to serve their country by serving their fellow countrymen and women, and by protecting their country without transgressing against the rights of others.
Gov't security officials & so-called counter-terrorism experts who credit all terrorist attacks in Somalia to #alshabab (ISIS boogieman) are either too naive, too incompetent, or too Machiavellian.
2/12
Dilemma:
How does one reveal unpleasant realities& tell a traumatized nation what appeared like a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ was in fact a runaway train coming at them?
How does one tell such nation: Any leader claiming " I will eradicate #Shabab" is *wrong leader*?
3/12
(so here I ago) Somalia is in an existential race agst time. Much like all other critical issues facing the nation.... Somali gov't does not control its intelligence or security. Worse, the gov't does lacks political will to address the real causes & effects.
Had it not been for Somalis transgressing against other #Somalis, the state would neither have been in its current pitifully fragmented state, nor would it have become the poster child for the failed states.
2/12
Since independence) Somalia has been a pawn in a geopolitical chess game and a gambit in the global war on terrorism. In that half a century, Somalia has never been entirely independent of foreign influences & exploitations.
3/12
But it was never pushed down to a level similar to the current where its nationhood, history & future aspirations are at a great risk.
Climbing out of current predicament would require an entirely different approach & stepping outside the confinement of the conventional.
We live in a world where the most crucial aspects of our lives have become profoundly interconnected & indeed interdependent. And this reality makes international cooperation on security a strategic imperative.
2/11
Unfortunately, when it comes to terrorism & counterterrorism the marketability of one’s expertise mainly depends on one’s willingness to unquestionably embrace the official narrative.
3/11
In the West also across Middle East & Africa, the media & pundits have become relentless echo chambers of this master narrative.
