Had it not been for Somalis transgressing against other #Somalis, the state would neither have been in its current pitifully fragmented state, nor would it have become the poster child for the failed states.
2/12
Since independence) Somalia has been a pawn in a geopolitical chess game and a gambit in the global war on terrorism. In that half a century, Somalia has never been entirely independent of foreign influences & exploitations.
3/12
But it was never pushed down to a level similar to the current where its nationhood, history & future aspirations are at a great risk.
Climbing out of current predicament would require an entirely different approach & stepping outside the confinement of the conventional.
4/12
Like a human being facing a deadly threat, there comes a time in a nation’s history when screaming, kicking, scratching, and using whatever means available to it is not only an existentialist obligation, but a moral one. Somalia is facing such a moment….
5/12
Somalia’s fate is now in a runaway train known as “building-blocks” of deconstruction.....Within the Somali context, the concept promotes the official dismemberment of the State by “re-tribalization” & paves the way for its detrimental deconstruction or “re-colonization”.
6/12
....my interlocutor—a prominent analyst and one of the leading opinion makers on Somalia—asked me a question that perplexed : “So, when would President Sharif Ahmed realize that the only way the IC nity would continue its support is to declare his outfit as SCS?”
7/12
I asked for clarification: “What is SCS?”
He replied with a flare of confidence & a grin: “South Central Somalia, of course. Considering how resourceful southerners are, SCS could easily become the commercial center that attracts business people from S/land & P/land”.
8/12
I told him.....that approach would be like solving a problem by creating several others.
On September 2010, the Noref Report by the Norwegian Peace-building Center titled ‘Remaking of the Somali State: a renewed building-block (BB) approach’ was released.
9/12
The report advocated breaking up each regional territory into “a smaller pieces—building blocks—that can more effectively be managed by local authorities; then, when these become working polities, reunite them under a decentralized, federal or even con-federal structure.”
10/12
A month later, on October 2010, the US State Department officially unveiled its “Dual-Track approach toward Somalia” which meant that US wud continue its dialogue/support of the TFG but start offering same for all other actors so long as they oppose al-Shabaab.
11/12
(A decade later) a quick gaze at the political landscape projects a daunting picture. (5+1 clan-based federal states) with their own presidents (& prez to be), shady foreign, defense & economic deals.
12/12
So much for sustainable security collaboration, unified military command, and nation to nation treaties of mutual interest.

Gov't security officials & so-called counter-terrorism experts who credit all terrorist attacks in Somalia to #alshabab (ISIS boogieman) are either too naive, too incompetent, or too Machiavellian.
2/12
Dilemma:
How does one reveal unpleasant realities& tell a traumatized nation what appeared like a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ was in fact a runaway train coming at them?
How does one tell such nation: Any leader claiming " I will eradicate #Shabab" is *wrong leader*?
3/12
(so here I ago) Somalia is in an existential race agst time. Much like all other critical issues facing the nation.... Somali gov't does not control its intelligence or security. Worse, the gov't does lacks political will to address the real causes & effects.
We live in a world where the most crucial aspects of our lives have become profoundly interconnected & indeed interdependent. And this reality makes international cooperation on security a strategic imperative.
2/11
Unfortunately, when it comes to terrorism & counterterrorism the marketability of one’s expertise mainly depends on one’s willingness to unquestionably embrace the official narrative.
3/11
In the West also across Middle East & Africa, the media & pundits have become relentless echo chambers of this master narrative.
Dear Dr Yasir Qadhi:
I read your thoughts with great deal of interest.
I respect the depth of your knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence & your courage to shed light on some of the most sensitive issues of our time- Turkey's decision per #HagiaSophia being the latest.
You eloquently provided historical context to build your scholarly argument and you dismissed Muslims who opposed Turkey's decision as people who are simply embarrassed by how shariah supports Turkey's decision.
I am not a scholar of Islam by any stretch of imagination.
3/5
But, with all due respect, I find your argument on this issue very selective. Here is why (question form):
- Has Prophet Muhammad PBUH converted any Jewish Temple or Christian church of Medina into a mosque against the will of those communities?
Thread 1/9 Since your reaction to my tweet generated broad interest let me offer this breakdown lest it gets entangled with other trivial or personal issues:
*….learned of him was when he came out swinging in defense of Somalia's Houdinis of corruption after I wrote an article by that same title. [true]
*Learned later he was their top hired gun.
[true but I must explain more....]
3/9 Disclosure: In past 24 hrs I received more DMs than I care to read. Some said you were good/generous person being targeted for domestic politics…others said you ‘had it coming’…yet others said whole thing was orchestrated by vicious people who wanted to settle a score with.

1/ Everything You Don't Want To Know About #Terrorism?
The United States Saudi Arabia tag-team that opened the Pandora's box.
Bandar Bin Sultan who was Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to US (& its de facto Foreign Minister) said this on Dec 15, 2003 at City Club of Cleveland. #Thread
2/ Answering a question from the audience citing @usnews report that KSA spent $70 billion in the 80s and 90s to promote jihad and “made it an international industry...and promote Wahabism” through educational systems around the world, here is Bandar (Bin Bush) said on record:
3/ “I think what you are referring to are the madrassas….here I am gonna tell you& probably for the first time many of you would hear this in public: In the 80s when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia& US made an alliance to get the Soviets out of Afghanistan....
