Trump and the Republican party exemplify these five elements of #fascism, & the UK @Conservatives aren't far behind.

Trump is often described as ‘authoritarian’. But that doesn’t really capture the more alarming aspects of his movement.
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
“Authoritarianism” isn’t adequate. It is #fascism.

Fascism stands for a coherent set of ideas different from – and more dangerous than – authoritarianism.

To fight those ideas, it’s necessary to be aware of what they are and how they fit together.
Borrowing from the cultural theorist Umberto Eco, the historians Emilio Gentile and Ian Kershaw, the political scientist Roger Griffin, and the former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright, Robert Reich offers five elements that distinguish #fascism from #authoritarianism.

As some of us celebrate the #Soviet victory over Nazism, let us remember the filthy role of the Canadian state, before, during and after #WWII. Prime Minister King, a vicious anti-Semite, was the most pro-appeasement leader in the British Empire, and was fond of Hitler Image
The Canadian state's interest in WWII was to use the war to whip up #nationalism and stamp out #socialist organizing at home, and to defend British #imperialism abroad. The Canadian state was happy to take on a founder of the Nazi Party, Otto #Strasser, as a political advisor. Image
Strasser's plan was to stage a #coup, so that the #Allies could cut a deal with the 'good Nazis.' But Strasser was a fraud, and only reluctantly, when no 'good Nazis' could be found to cut a deal with, did the Allies invade. The cream of the Nazi army was defeated by the #Soviets Image

I spoke with #TSMC's Former General Counsel Richard "Dick" Thurston on how to interpret the #China provision in the #CHIPSAct. One provision prevents recipients of the funding from expanding advanced chip capacity in China in next 10 years. What is exactly restricted? (1/11)
"..the covered entity MAY NOT engage in any SIGNIFICANT TRANSACTION....involving the MATERIAL EXPANSION of semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the People’s Republic of China." The restriction is designed for advanced node under 28-nanometer (28nm not included). (2/11)
As for memory, analog and packaging technologies, the restriction would be on any #legacy generation of semiconductor technology relative to logic chips under 28nm...as determined by Secretary of #Commerce. Not clear how to define the technologies mentioned above yet. (3/11)

Rabindranath Tagore's 'Jana Gana Mana' had 5 stanzas. Only first stanza was adopted as National Anthem of #India 🇮🇳
Reason: Short, crisp, marching version.
Truth: India's Etonian elite feared their jaws would drop off if made to sing all 5 stanzas.
Listen:
Just as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's 'Vande Mataram' was reduced to its first stanza as our National Song by our Etonian elite because they could not tolerate the idea of worshipping the nation of #India 🇮🇳 ... and were scared their jaws would drop off.
Here is the story of the National Anthem of #India 🇮🇳
How 'Jana Gana Mana' (then known as the 'Morning Song of India') journeyed from its birth as a Brahmo Sangeet sung during morning prayer service, to its truncated adoption as our National Anthem.

.@UKLabour's latest attempt to rebrand itself as "the true party of patriotism" troubles me: "When it comes to upholding British values, securing the future of our world-leading institutions, & the promise for the next generation, it’s the Labour party which puts BRITAIN FIRST!"
I understand why @UKLabour are attempting this, & while it IS possible to re-accent what #patriotism & #nationalism mean, imho, their recent efforts have all the nuance & focus of a drunk Boris Johnson & Nadine Dorries doing naked body popping at a wake.

theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/j…
"Our British values, which we hold dear & are known for around the world: diplomacy, rule of law, decency & integrity. Our country has ALWAYS led the way as a measured & decent example to the world!"

Including the centuries it spent murdering, colonizing, exploiting & looting?😬

So Keir Starmer has written a piece in the right-wing non-dom billionaire-owned ex-employer of Boris Johnson, The Telegraph.

It's behind a paywall, so I reproduce the text below, & add my own two penn'orth on the contested concepts of #patriotism & #nationalism at the end.
"The #PlatinumJubilee is a chance to celebrate our extraordinary monarch and the values she represents

The Jubilee weekend isn’t just an opportunity for us to reflect on the 70 years since Her Majesty’s accession to the throne – although it will, of course, be that."
"And it isn’t simply a chance for a country wearied by the extraordinary circumstances of the past few years to let its hair down – although it is, of course, your patriotic duty to do just that."

A few reflections on and highlights from Preventable by @devisridhar #Covid19 #pandemics #globalhealth Image
Preventable is a #mustread. A clear, fast-moving time travel through the past years of #Covid19.
Gone into print in August 2021, the book is a reminder of harrowing images (and for many very real personal experiences and losses). I sadly think many of these have already been forgotten, just a few months later. Image

1/ Some things have been on my mind that maybe we need to try to remember and think about at this fulcrum moment in the #abortion debate.

Since I wrote my book several years ago & re-read #Roe for the 1st time in years, I've been wondering abt something.

litpress.org/Products/4467/…
2/ #Roe, let's remember, divided pregnancy into trimesters. #Abortion was more or less unrestricted in the 1st 12wks, practically prohibited in the last 12wks. Interests of mother & child were balanced this way.

This amts to a legal recognition of personhood.
3/ The only sensible reading of the #Roe scheme is as a balancing of the interests of 2 persons that are in conflict.

This is a glass-half-full reading. But the casual way we talk abt Roe as a total loss is not constitutionally realistic or accurate.

#SCOTUS news are shocking
Even tho no big surprise: This lets the dreams of far-right movements from Poland via France to Brazil come true: to repressively control the female body, thus her reproduction, thus her sex life
I take 1 personal and 2 political points out of this 1/4
As a (hopefully) loving boyfriend, the most terrible moments for gf's were when there was the slightest hint of a potential (!) #pregnancy. To disregard the, (as I'd say as a bystander) emotional horror women go through, is appalling. Women need #support, not #oppression!
Politically (also in #Europe), the far-right has succeeded by playing dirty: Disregarding all democratic traditions and fair play rules for electing #SCOTUS judges, this is a key example of how "just setting an example" is not enough.
No: Key institutions require tough fights!

Support Britain's veterans.🇬🇧

The UK Govt has ignored MPs' calls for an inquiry into our veterans' benefits system, which involves long waits, high rejection rates, low pay-outs & lengthy appeals, with many pushed into poverty, declining health & suicide.

The Government's attitude to our brave veterans is a national disgrace.🇬🇧

The “Great Tommy Sleep Out” was held in March, where participants braved the cold for one night in support of the approximately 6,000 military veterans experiencing homelessness.

In 2018, then @UKLabour leader Jeremy Corbyn pledged to end the “scourge” of rough sleeping among armed forces veterans & called on Theresa May to officially register the number of homeless ex-servicemen & women.

The level of debate around the controversial issue of “free speech” following the announcement of Elon Musk's intention to buy @Twitter, just reinforces the importance of considered, well-informed, & intelligent opinions, backed up by historical & contemporary evidence.
'Free speech isn’t a norm, but a slogan: a label each of us applies to language & conventions we approve of. People complaining about threats to free speech sometimes don’t like the way new norms & voices are challenging their own.' - Fara Dabhoiwala.

I've written elsewhere about the highly contested & important concepts of #nationalism & #patriotism, which in Britain & many other countries, have been successfully appropriated & mobilised by the Right, leaving the Left stumped, floundering, & backed into a corner.
Nationalism is generally associated with jingoism, xenophobia & distasteful sense of the superiority of one's own country over others. But this isn't strictly what it means to a sizeable proportion of voters, who interpret it more as 'putting one's own country's interests first'.
Similarly, patriotism - the feeling of pride in, devotion to, attachment to, or even love for one's country - is often dismissed by the Left as at best unseemly, & at worst, racist.

Most discussion of nationalism & patriotism on the Left is without nuance & electorally suicidal.

Some book reviews! My fieldwork in Urumchi #Xinjiang planned to explore relations between Han, #Uyghurs, & party-state, particularly how urban groups most exposed to party education understand each other and how interactions shape #nationalism #security

cambridge.org/core/product/i…
What wasn't planned was 2009 mass violence. Han & #Uyghurs explained violence with narratives familiar from living there previously but crystallised into starker boundaries & insecurity. #China's party-state framed Uyghur identities as security problems, intensifying insecurity.
I had hoped to live there again during more peaceful times and even explore some themes in the reviews below. But Xi's ethnic extinction policies and his closed "new era" means we have to learn and use new methods.
