📢 @Ianblackford_MP: “Thank you Mr Speaker can I wish you, all your staff, all members in this House a Merry Christmas and a good New Year when it comes” #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: “And send my thanks to those on the front line. Our emergency services and our armed forces for everything that they have done to get us through the year.” #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "Mr Speaker, the public understands the threat that Omicron poses to all our people and our NHS." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "But as we saw from last night’s vote, the Tories might be privileged enough to live in denial about this danger - but the rest of us have a responsibility to live in the real world." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "That means increasing public health measures and increasing financial support for businesses and workers.

The Scottish Government is delivering £100 million from our fixed budget to support businesses. But we all know, more is needed." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "Yesterday the UK Government put out a press release saying new financial support was coming.

But last night the Treasury u-turned – saying no new money was available." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "So Prime Minister, which is it? Is there any new money to support businesses or was it all just smoke and mirrors?" #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "Mr Speaker, that really wasn’t an answer and it just confirms it was all smoke and mirrors.

It is clear from that answer that there is no new money for Scotland. Once again - people can’t trust a word this Prime Minister says." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "Parties in Downing Street and Tory HQ, dodgy dealings on renovations, and his distant relationship with the truth – all of it has left him weak." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "Last night, this UK government struggled to get measures through this house that Scotland has already had for months.

A Prime Minister who can’t do what is needed to protect the public – is no Prime Minister at all." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "No-one wants further restrictions, but Scotland can’t afford to be hamstrung if the Prime Minister can’t act because he has 99 problems sitting behind him." #PMQs
📢 @Ianblackford_MP: "So, will he give the devolved governments the powers and financial support they need to protect our people?" #PMQs

First Minister @NicolaSturgeon: "Good afternoon. I’m joined by the Chief Medical Officer, and we will give you an update on the spread of Omicron in Scotland."
NS: "We will also reinforce the important request we are making of everyone just now - to limit the number of contacts you are having in the run-up to Christmas, and indeed, to stay at home as much as is feasible."
NS: "First, let me run through today’s statistics.

4,336 positive cases were reported yesterday, which is a positivity rate of 10.1%."

@StewartHosieSNP 📣 @StewartHosieSNP: "The problem is - when one sees photographs of Tory staffers having parties, because it's one rule for you, and a different rule for them, the mixed messaging of the UK government couldn't be more stark." #bbcqt
@StewartHosieSNP 📣 @StewartHosieSNP: "Omicron is massively transmissible. Even if the numbers of people hospitalised are relatively small, a small percentage of a very big number still puts huge pressure on the NHS.

Mask-wearing, hand-washing and the measures - that's just common sense." #bbcqt

@NicolaSturgeon FM: "5,951 cases were reported yesterday - 45.4% of cases now show the S-Gene dropout, indicative of Omicron.

It therefore seems likely that by tomorrow, Omicron will be the dominant strain circulating in Scotland."
@NicolaSturgeon FM: "Because of Omicron's much higher transmissibility, this will drive an even more rapid increase in cases.

Omicron is spreading exceptionally fast, much faster than anything experienced in this pandemic."

@NicolaSturgeon 📣 @NicolaSturgeon: "The last two years have been the toughest most of us can remember.

I can never thank you enough for the sacrifices you have made.

This winter, just as we thought we had turned a corner in the pandemic, the emergence of Omicron struck us a cruel blow."
@NicolaSturgeon FM: "Omicron is much more transmissible than previous strains, and it is now spreading very quickly.

We anticipate a steep and rapid rise in cases.

We don’t know yet if Omicron’s impact on individual health is milder than variants like Delta."

📺 Watch @NicolaSturgeon's statement on the Omicron variant and the latest COVID updates in Scotland.

⏰ Tune in now on scottishparliament.tv or follow this thread for live updates.
@NicolaSturgeon FM: "I will give an update on Covid, and share the latest information we have on the Omicron variant.

I will also set out the further protective measures we consider necessary to help slow its spread while we accelerate the pace of booster vaccines."
@NicolaSturgeon FM: "3,177 positive cases were reported yesterday – 11.3% of all tests carried out.

The number of PCR tests yesterday was lower than in recent days - I therefore want to appeal to people not to put off going for a PCR test if you have symptoms or a positive lateral flow."

First Minister @NicolaSturgeon: "Thanks for joining us. As you can see I’m joined by the Chief Medical Officer and the National Clinical Director."
NS: "Throughout the pandemic - particularly at key stages - I’ve tried to be open and upfront with you about the challenges and uncertainties confronting us, so that you can better understand - if not always agree with - the difficult judgments and decisions we have had to make."
NS: "This is another moment when such frankness is really important.

So the purpose of today’s update is to level with you on what we know about spread in Scotland of the new Omicrom variant - and also our estimate of what we are likely to face in the days and weeks to come."
