So this afternoon I wondered... what happened to those "Missing Links" in the European rail network Micheal Cramer used to write about when he was a MEP?

Cramer's 2015 map as a PDF is here 👇
michael-cramer.eu/fileadmin/docu…

And there's a 2018 update here 👇
michael-cramer.eu/fileadmin/docu… Image
In this thread I'll steadily examine each of the 15 borders in turn... and over the next few days! 🙂
First up it's border 1

Mõisakü 🇪🇪 - Ipiki 🇱🇻

This is what Cramer says ImageImage
But on Open Railway Map there is nothing anywhere near!

Same on Latvian Railways site, and on the Estonian side you can just get as far as Pärnu

Any ideas here @briedisunrepshe @moritzkraehe?

How far do operable freight lines go here? ImageImage
Honestly strikes me that this one is useless. Even getting a cross border service running on the main line via Valga would be progress just now!
Border 2

Givet 🇫🇷 - Dinant 🇧🇪

This is what Cramer says - inc. an update in 2018, saying reactivating the rail line is not possible...

But 🥁 FR and BE now agree to reopen this one! Without any date by which to do it though...

Border 3

Dunkerque 🇫🇷 - De Panne 🇧🇪

This is what Cramer says

But there is no news about this one. FR and BE instead want to look at Mons-Valenciennes

Question to French and Belgian rail nerds here - which of these lines makes more sense to re-open? ImageImage
Border 4

Kleve 🇩🇪 - Nijmegen 🇳🇱

This is what Cramer says ImageImage
Today this is a cross border Draisine! The lines hence in part still exist. In 2018 it looked like reactivation would not work rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/kl…

This one is really close to Emmerich 🇩🇪 - Arnhem 🇳🇱 line. How strong is the case to even reactivate this one? ImageImage
Border 5

Rechnitz 🇦🇹 - Szombathely 🇭🇺

This is what Cramer says (inc. a 2018 update) ImageImageImage
Again here I struggle with this one

The line further south from Graz to Szentgotthárd connects to Szombathely, and now even has a Budapest-Ljubljana EuroCity that uses the route

Even the lines Austrian side are only branchlines

Sure it'd be nice. Is it economic? Image
Border 6

Selb-Plößberg 🇩🇪 - Aš 🇨🇿

This is what Cramer says (inc. a 2018 update) ImageImageImage
🎉

This is true! This re-opened!

And there's a delightful 🇩🇪🇨🇿🇩🇪 service here Image
Border 7

Waldkirchen 🇩🇪 - Nové Údolí 🇨🇿

This is what Cramer says (inc. a 2018 update) ImageImageImage
There's a bit part of the DE-CZ border here without any cross border rail

But even Passau-Freyung struggles to survive. Before closure Waldkirchen - Nové Údolí was in a bad state. Again this one looks really questionable to me...

(also that's all today - I'll resume tomorrow) Image

Rather than just a repair issue, this has been a fascinating insight into design of electric products, and points of failure

Somehow the person who owned this machine managed to get water into the top at the front - not something the designers ever thought would happen...
This has meant a part - the switches to turn the machine on - failed

Even getting switches out of the machine is not simple, while replacing anything else on a Gaggia espresso machine is easy
Getting spare switches is - you guessed it - also not so straightforward, because those aren't the part that normally fails (pump and boiler are)

Past 24h on Twitter people have explained to me:

Brussels geography (thanks, but I lived 4yrs there and go all the time)

Schengen (thanks, but I ran a campaign website about it, blogged on it years)

Repairing electronics (my tweet was about how I’ve been repairing for years)
Timetables of night trains (thanks, but I work on this, and run @TrainsForEurope)

Mechanics of a Tory leadership contest (thanks, but do you think I’ve not checked it before writing about it?)
Really folks, I might well be WRONG with the conclusions I draw, but I’m not ill informed. It might be a fair assumption that I have checked the background!

🤔 When does a Tory leadership election now happen?
Right away looks unlikely - COVID situation is too much of a mess. Would prompt accusation of navel gazing by Tories in a pandemic.
March also is tricky. UK might be emerging from the worst of a COVID wave, but then local elections and NI elections in May are in view. Plus Art 16/Protocol needs sorting by then.

Right

Take a deep breath

Rather than just critique other maps, I have now made my own "Longest train journey" map - here it is

And there is a *huge* blog post to explain it! 👇
jonworth.eu/the-longest-tr…
I use geodisic distance to calculate the longest trip - basically the two points on the globe furthest apart nominally connected by rail, taking into account the curvature of the earth
Any such really long route is impossible without a bit of walking in a few places

But I have two workable variants...

Heavy rail and walking *only* is
Cascais 🇵🇹 - Woodlands 🇸🇬
11904.73 km

Add trams and metros and it's
Praia das Maçãs 🇵🇹 - Changji MRT 🇸🇬
11923.23 km

OK so what's in the #RailActionPlan that @Transport_EU has finally put out?

18 page PDF here 👇
transport.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2…

Summary in the 🧵
#EUYearOfRail
ERTMS by 2030 for the TEN-T core network, 2040 for the comprehensive network (brought forward from 2050)

🤔 solid and welcome proposal to improve interoperability, but how is the Commission going to make sure this happens?
A revision of the Technical Specifications for Interoperability in 2022

🤔 these Specifications have caused problems for the introduction of new trains, so simplifying rules here makes sense. Devil will be in the detail. Role for ERA here

Now live on EBS @TimmermansEU @NicolasSchmitEU & @AdinaValean talking about climate transition and - why I am tuning in - the @Transport_EU action plan for cross border rail in Europe audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/ebs/live/1

I'll turn this into a thread, and will use #RailActionPlan
Here's the press release covering the #RailActionPlan ec.europa.eu/commission/pre…

But I cannot find the actual plan, despite @TimmermansEU having just mentioned it...
Sorry @transport_EU but where *is* the action plan? Not linked from the press release. Not on the DG MOVE website. We're listening to a press conference without seeing the document! #RailActionPlan
