It is very important to get involved in our local temples. This is the least we can do to save our Dharma. I asked my neighborhood temple if they open the temple at midnight on 31st Dec. They said they do and have been doing so for many years now. It is a Vinayakar temple

with deities of Murugan, Durgai, Vishnu along the circumference of the Moolavar Vinayagar, Navagraham and Anjaneyar separately to one side. It is a small temple on a main road catering to the spiritual needs of lower income households. They have a Brahmin priest and all Hindu

festivals like Thai poosam, Vinayakar Chathurthi etc. are celebrated well. The temple opens morning & evening for a few hours everyday & has a good number of devotees visiting the temple. I told them as per Agama Vidhi the temple once closed at 9pm cannot be opened at midnight

& pujas performed to deities in the middle of the night. This is not a church. The same special pujas can be performed at 6 am on 1st January to herald the new year. Though technically it is not Hindus New Year, we have in general accepted it as the new year for all sorts. I told

them I will give them a donation of Rs 4000 which I had earmarked for charity if they do the puja on Jan 1st instead of 31st midnight. They have agreed but I have to wait & see if they just said that to shut me up or they will actually cancel the midnight puja and have it on Jan

1st morning. Further I asked them if they have Patta for their temple. They said no. I cited many cases where a temple is demolished but a nearby church is not because the temple did not have a Patta. Earlier nobody dared to raze down the temples but with this ruling party that

seems to be the norm. Hence for getting legal protection against demolition we need to make sure that the temple holds all legal documents & cannot be demolished under legal discrepancies. They agreed to do that asap. This temple has had many Kumbabhishekams and one is due next

year, but being on the main road, the govt can easily demolish it under the pretext of road expansion or encroachment though there are several shops in the same line as the temple on either side.
