Egypt plans to dominate African sports and become a world class destination for sports events 🇪🇬

Lets talk:

- The crowded Cairo problem
- The new Capital
- Their Olympic Games City
- World Cup 2030 and Olympic 2032 goals
- Sports tourism potential

[THREAD] ⬇️
#ThursdayThoughts
There are 104 million Egyptians and most of them live in cities along the Nile river with Cairo being its most populous and crowded City. Cairo itself has a population density of 19,376 people per square kilometer.

Simply put, there are just too many people living in one area.
To address this problem, the Egyptian government has taken the decision to build a New Administrative Capital approximately 45km east of Cairo, on part of the desert equal to the size of Singapore.

It is expected to cost about $40bn and consist of 21 residential districts
Its downtown is to have skyscrapers, including the Oblisco Capitale that is designed in the form of a Pharaonic obelisk and will stand at a height of 1,000 meters, becoming the tallest in the world; and the Iconic Tower, which is the tallest in Africa.
The city will also have a central park, artificial lakes, about 2,000 educational institutions, a technology and innovation park, 663 hospitals and clinics, 1,250 mosques and churches, a 90,000-seat stadium, 40,000 hotel rooms, a major theme park four times the size of Disneyland
The new capital will have two massive sports centers. Sports City to the north is the first with a number of outdoor fields and a large indoor hall. The venue already hosted a major event with the World Men's Handball Championship that took place in January this year
To the south is an even bigger sports complex

The Egypt International Olympic City is a gigantic facility and is being built with the future in mind.

Egypt is planning to bid to host the 2030 World Cup and become the first African country to host an Olympic Games in 2032.
Constructed on area that is 118,865 square metres, it will include a 93,440 seater stadium, two indoor stadiums, training pitches, team sports halls, an Olympic complexes for tennis, squash, aquatics, equestrian, as well as administrative, cultural and hospitality buildings.
The goal is to become the go-to African country for major sporting events and increase the sports tourism component in the GDP of the country.

Over 80% of tourists who visit Egypt come for leisure activities and the view is to make sports a key revenue generator.
On 22 February 2020, Egypt held the second Pyramids Half Marathon sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Sport. This event is one of a series of sports events which focuses on tourism at the country’s archaeological sites under the slogan ‘race through history’.
Egypt hosted 61 official tournaments during 2019, in which more than 100,000 participants from 94 countries participated. In 2020, Egypt hosted 11 world and regional championships and in 2021, they were set to host 31 regional and international tournaments
In 2019, Egypt ranked 38 out of 90 countries on the index for global sporting impact issued by Sportcal, and came in 56th position among the 205 countries in the International Sports Index issued by Live Football Tickets.
6 cities come in first place at the level of Africa and the Arab world and ranked 72 globally out of 608 cities around the world. Egypt came in 29th place out of 140 countries in the global index for the availability of huge stadiums with a capacity of 20,000 seats or more.
Egypt’s young population is rapidly growing. Adolescents (aged 10-19) are around 17 million, representing approximately 19 percent of the total population. Together with youth in the age group 20-24 years, an additional 9 million, they represent almost one third of the population
Knowing this, the Ministry of State for Youth and Sports was heavily involved in the planning of the two sports centers in the new capital with the view to providing the youth with a way to address inclusion and enhance the life skills of marginalized boys and girls
Egypt is planning well ahead of their peers and they have identified sport as a key driver towards achieving their goal to be a dominant player not just on the sporting front but economically as well.
That concludes this week's #ThursdayThoughts piece which also happens to be the last one for the year.

In today's #ThursdayThoughts thread ⬇️ the valuation of football clubs.

According to Statista, @AlAhly is Africa's most valuable club at €25.53 million with @Masandawana being SA's most valuable at €18.98 million (R376 million)

Here's how these values are arrived at.
This review cites the various valuation models used but mostly looks at the Multivariate Model which is most commonly used worldwide and was developed by Tom Markham in 2013.

We begin with the other models and how they work.
Market capitalisation:

A company’s share price
is multiplied by the number of shares in issue to provide the market capitalisation or company
valuation

An obvious problem is only clubs floated on an exchange can be valued reliably using market capitalisation.

I was asked to look into player salaries in rugby and football in SA.

While this is tough to do because financials are not divulged, this is what I've found ⤵️

It's no surprise that most players don't earn anywhere near what you think they do...

[THREAD]
According to a 2016 FIFPRO Global Employment Report, Less than 2% of players globally earn more than $720k a year while over 45% earn less than $1k pm.

Of players earning a salary
-74% made less than $4k net/pm
-45% earned less than $1k pm
-21% earn less than $3k net/pm
According to a 2007 parliamentary discussion with the South African Football Players Association, Mr. Thulagauyo Gocoshubelwe (Deputy General Secretary, SAFPU) spoke to player salaries and said, “The average salary was the subject of a survey which had been commissioned

Afternoon ladies and gents, today's thread is on #Paralympics classifications.

Classifications are a way for organisers to group like with like athletes so that people of roughly equivalent disabilities can compete together.

This is how they work ⤵️

[THREAD]
#Tokyo2020
Classification is carried out through a process called “Athlete Evaluation” that comprise procedures for the assessment of athletes and the allocation of Sport Class and Sport Class Status

Evaluation answers three key questions. ⬇️
-Does the athlete have an eligible Impairment for this sport?
-Does the athlete’s eligible Impairment meet the minimum impairment criteria of the sport?
-Which sport class should the athlete be allocated in based on the extent to which the athlete is able to execute the sport?

Ladies and gents, it's Friday and time for the second leg of the #KnowYourOwner series and this week we look at the other #DStvPrem new boys @TSGALAXYFC, and their owner @SukaziTim.

I'll focus on Tim's business life, the birth of Galaxy a little agent scandal and more. #PSL
As usual, I will re-post my disclaimer. I'm not an auditor, accountant nor am I a sports journalist. I am merely a football fan who likes to read up on the financial/business side of sport and this is all publicly available information.

Let us begin

#KnowYourOwner
Tim Sukazi hails from a town called Dennilton near Kwaggafontein in Mpumalanga.

There isn't much known about his personal life apart from allegations that he is in a polygamist union with two wives.

I've been out so haven't yet engaged with the people saying Multichoice has been in the game and done nothing wrong so no conflict.

A conflict doesn't have to result in wrongdoing to be wrong. Just being in a position of potentially exerting undue influence makes it a conflict.
The mere fact that Multichoice has the Diski Challenge, Is a broadcaster and also has Supersport is a massive conflict of interest.

The fact that they haven't done anything untoward with that influence is immaterial. They're still in an unfair position of Influence.
An example which we all know of is the Duke. That is most definitely a major conflict of interest and year in year out, we see decisions made which bring into question, the independence of the league.

The debate has been raging about the #PSL promotion and relegation playoffs and I must admit that I too have been in the “scrap it” camp. The arguments for and against were compelling so I decided to take a deeper look.

This is what I found

Thread 👇🏽
As usual, I referred to the official PSL reading material as a start, in this instance, The NSL Handbook.

The play-off rules are quite simple. The PSL team in 15th plays against 2nd and 3rd in the NFD in a mini tournament and the team which finishes top gets promoted.
In the most recent playoff, @BlackLeopardsFC easily won three matches in a row and have a goal difference of +5 ahead of their last match against TTM today.

But what does history tell us about the playoff and does it always favor the #PSL side?
