Since spring 2020, the #Winnemucca Indian Colony, mostly comprised of Paiute and Shoshone elders, has been under threat of eviction. The tribal council passed a motion and hired contractors to spur “economic development.”
unicornriot.ninja/2021/winnemucc…
The land the colony is on was granted to displaced Indigenous people by federal executive order in 1917. The full allotment is 340 acres.
In November, Elisa Dick got an unexpected call at work. Her housemate told her to get home quickly because men with front end loaders were preparing to level her home. “When I got here, they were here with the machines and they told me I had 10 minutes to get all of my things.”
After packing what she could, Dick stood by and watched as contractors, escorted by armed men, flattened her home of 29 years.

Dick is one of about twenty people residing on the colony in Humboldt County, Nevada.
Supporters established the native-led Newe’neen so’ka’pa Camp in November 2021 to raise awareness through demonstrations and community events, and to enable elders to create a long-term solution to the threat of eviction.
On the ground, allies help with chores, share meals, watch for construction equipment attempting to enter the colony, and support elders who are working to build self-governance.
In the short term, supporters want to help stop evictions. Moving forward, they hope to support the Winnemucca Indian Colony residents’ bid for sovereignty.
Since Newe’neen So’ka’pa Camp was established, law enforcement from local and federal agencies, including the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), have made at least two attempts to enter the colony.
On December 20, contractors arrived to continue work on the colony. In response, a supporter locked down to construction equipment, preventing the machine from operating.
Residents and supporters of the Winnemucca Indian Colony pray near a concrete barrier installed at the community’s entrance in 2020 by an outside tribal council. The barriers were part of an effort to restrict travel to and from the colony.

"Indigenous people, we get treated like shit and this is just a prime example. Look at these elders' homes being bulldozed and leaving them nowhere to go. That's genocide, that's part of the erasure of our people." - Nenookaasi, supporter of the Winnemucca Indian Colony Residents
On November 2, 2021, contractors began bulldozing elders' homes on the Winnemucca Indian Colony in Humboldt County, NV. The Colony is federally designated Native land that was granted to displaced Indigenous people in 1917.
In early November 2021, an interim tribal council made up of people who do not live on the colony began restricting access for residents, preventing them from coming or going freely and denying access to visitors.

Ruby Montoya is doing whatever she can to lighten her punishment after publicly admitting to a string of arson and sabotage attacks against the Dakota Access Pipeline (#DAPL) in 2017. unicornriot.ninja/2021/ruby-mont…
According to a recent article in @TheEconomist, “Montoya agreed to cooperate with the FBI” in fall 2020. During such FBI debriefs, agents typically attempt to solicit information on other activists and pressure co-defendants to testify against each other.
Since summer 2021, Montoya’s lawyer repeatedly filed motions on her behalf asking the court to allow her to file documents under seal—a practice typically avoided by those facing political charges in an effort to be transparent about engagement w/ law enforcement and the courts.

Tomorrow morning the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments as to whether all pre-viability prohibitions on abortion are unconstitutional—putting Roe v. Wade at risk.
The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health hearing stems from Mississippi lawmakers and Governor Tate Reeves pushing for highly restrictive abortion bans. The audio of the hearing will be streamed live on the Court’s site: supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments…
Mississippi, a state with only one abortion clinic, passed a 15-week abortion ban in March 2018; however, the very next day, it was temporarily blocked after the Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit.
