Meanwhile the @washingtonpost’s report fails to mention that the Govt of Ethiopia convened not only the task force that Filsan ran to establish the truth early in the war, which clearly was not the reason for her resignation, but also prosecuted offenders in military courts.
This interview addresses that core issue and #Washpo / @maxbearak’s failure to even mention that this took place - it may be ongoing - is journalistic malpractice given current heightened levels concern about US media reporting.
We know for certain by contrast that TPLF denies absolutely committing crimes against civilians even though they are apparent and that @reda_getachew called for revenge.
Evidence that rape has been used as a weapon of war is very widespread - also not mentioned in this article.
But let’s get back to @LaurenBinDC’s interpretation. She works for the Congressional Research Service, providing taxpayer funded briefings to members of the US Congress.
As such her probity ought to be of an even higher standard than we expect from a news organization.
Specifically she works for the Congress Foreign Affairs committee chaired by @RepGregoryMeeks assisted by @RepKarenBass and @Ilhan. This is her private Twitter account but one wonders whether bringing the advice she provides to the committee’s partiality into question is advised.
Selective quoting is a thing. And with this article posted in the influential “Voice of Washington” newspaper, ought to be avoided.
As previously mentioned in this thread, there has been accountability for rapes committed by Ethiopian Govt. Forces. There was an inquiry by the independent @EthioHRC, and is ongoing monitoring, and a joint investigation with @UNHumanRights also.
Clearly @1_filsan said these things, which are true, but did she also mention to @maxbearak the inquiries and judicial processes which followed which are not mentioned in this report. Perhaps she could address this via @Twitter to clarify what @washingtonpost was told.
This quote is used in part by @LaurenBinDC and the missing bit is relevant. It shows us that @1_filsan pushed back, was over ruled but kept her job till September when she was replaced during a post election Govt. Cabinet reorganization.
Her resignation came two days after being notified she was losing her position. And she was one of many people who were replaced or reassigned during this period. The article casts this as retribution for standing up for herself. The facts suggest otherwise.
This bit of the article is also missing from @LaurenBinDC’s Twitter summary/indictment of the GoE based on @1_filsan’s interview. It recounts a small part of the horror inflicted in the Somali Region of Ethiopia under TPLF/EPRDF leadership.
Here’s a story about that time. Abiy removed the TPLF appointed regional governor in rather spectacular fashion early after assuming office. dw.com/en/ethiopian-s…
As a Congressional Research Service researcher since 2006, it is likely that @LaurenBinDC knows all of this and much more. Yet she continues to selectively use material about the complex situation in Ethiopia, seemingly siding with the TPLF.
Whilst in doing so she is blowing with the wind no doubt in relation to some of here congressional clients and counterparts in @StateDept, it is unprincipled, unprofessional and intellectually dishonest for her to continually cast this conflict publicly in such a narrow spectrum.
This thread is about Hurricane Dorian, the storm that was originally forecast to make a devastating landfall on Mar-A-Lago, and which Trump famously claimed was going to head to Alabama.
It was inspired by new imagery which we now have of this happening on @NASA Worldview.
@NASA While Trump was widely ridiculed at the time for suggesting that the storm might make its way to Alabama, initial forecasts did indicate that it would take a path in that direction.
@NASA From my thread at the time (August 28th), the map shown here is the one that he added to in an oval office press conference on September 5th 2021 (Video here >> abc.net.au/news/2019-09-0…), were he added his modified forecast for Hurricane Dorian's path.
So here we have a Western academic, European, telling Ethiopia that unless it accepts two terrorist groups as participants in a planned national dialogue, that dialogue is worthless, just symbolic.
In the North of the North Pacific up near Alaska there is a very large area of clear Ocean that that can be seen through the clouds which looks a little like a giant rotating eye.
Here we see it in context along side North America, and the entire rotating high-pressure area appears to be roughly the size of North America. Its presence appears to be contributing to the big freeze in Canada and all the snow in the US.
And here we see it on December 27-28. At the bottom of the animations you can see the onshore atmospheric river flows which are bringing massive rains to California, and moisture to the midwest and north east.
A snapshot of the storms over the Middle East at their peak last night. The larger area of storms (as identified by weather radar) near the Gulf is the size of Germany. The smaller one over Mecca is twice the size of Switzerland.
Here's a video of some of that rain falling last night.
This animation shows the Gulf Coast end of the storm over night. The rain will have been continuous but radar data flow to @Zoom_Earth appears to be patchy.
Q: Remind me, what brought you to tweeting so intensely about Horn politics this year?
A: I am a reporter of politics, climate and international relations and editor of Scoop.co.nz. Initially it was climate & the GERD that brought me to the horn.
Q: Does it pay well?
A: No, I have a publication of my own. And I would not accept payment for journalism work. It is rewarding work though. Addressing a monumental injustice, global importance.
