Like religious fundamentalism, free-market fundamentalism is a cancer on the earth, its proponents ideological extremists.

The BIG LIE of the twenty-first century is that deregulated free-market capitalism is our salvation, rather than our perdition.
Nobody alive today has ever - or ever will - live in a purely free-market society.

Everyone on earth lives in countries characterised by a mixed economy, where markets coexist with government intervention, necessary to protect citizens from the cancer of free-market capitalism.
It's at this point that free-market fundamentalists & proponents of the BIG LIE start talking about communism or socialism, as though any purely free-market society has ever existed - it hasn't, anywhere, ever. These are usually idiots, often paid to protect an unethical system.
In mixed economies, market principles of private contracting are combined with socialist principles of state ownership, regulation, & planning, primarily to protect citizens from the dangerous, exploitative & brutal tendencies & excesses of unrestrained free-market capitalism.
There are significant disadvantages inherent in a free market economy, obvious to children, but not, it seems, to many adults:

Since profit maximization is always the single biggest motivation for corporations, they inevitably reduce their costs unethically, by cutting corners.
Profit maximisation incentivises unethical behaviour such as polluting the environment or exploiting workers. Govt intervention is supposed to limit these harms, but Govts full of unethical free-market fundamentalists, like the current UK Govt, actually encourage this behaviour.
Under a purely free-market capitalist system, goods & services that are not profitable will simply not be produced or run, which is why rural transportation, postal services, & hospitals have been decimated in recent decades. The poor would simply have to do without healthcare.
Large corporations dominate certain markets, even where there is some competition.

This allows them to maximize their profits by exploiting suppliers (by squeezing their prices down), workers (lowering working conditions) & consumers (by charging higher selling prices).
Amazon is guilty of such practices in the book industry, where they dictate unfair terms to publishers.

Large companies dominate due to economies of scale: they can beat or buy up smaller companies simply for their size alone, rather than for the quality of their product.
Certain members of society will not be able to undertake paid work, such as some disabled people, full-time carers, or people who lack suitable skills.

In a free market economy, they are 'left behind' by the economy at large &, without sufficient income, fall into poverty.
Without an ethical government, these individuals are not just unsupported, but scapegoated & demonised, & crime, behavioural problems & inequality can all spiral: a few people live in luxury while others cannot pay their way, get enough food, access basic shelter, & so on.
When a free-market economy spins out of control, as it inevitably does, the consequences are catastrophic for millions of people, through no fault of their own.

From the Great Depression to the global financial crash of 2008, market failures devastate societies & lives.
Many of these catastrophic failures stem from those seeking short-term profits over slow & steady gains, usually aided by loose credit, highly-leveraged assets & minimal Govt intervention.

And they nearly always get away with their dangerously irresponsible unethical behaviour.
It is increasingly obvious that deregulated free-market ideology, of the kind preferred by the current UK Government, has had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the twenty-first century, with seemingly no discernible negative consequences for those responsible.
Free-market fundamentalism has resulted in austerity, polarisation, rising inequality & poverty, low-paid insecure work, devastation of public services, unpreparedness for the pandemic - which alone has cost 150,000 lives so far - & the cataclysmic consequences of climate change.
Free-market ideology, pushed by its misguided, sociopathic & dangerously irresponsible proponents, has resulted in, & continues to result in:

Endangering life
Serious disruptions
Serious damage to property
Serious harm against people
Serious risk to the public’s health & safety
Consequently, imho, free-market fundamentalism fulfils the UK definition of terrorism given in the Terrorism Act 2006:

an “action or threat designed to influence the government or intimidate the public. Its purpose is to advance a political, religious or ideological cause.”

FUN FACTS:

Carrie Symond's dad, Matthew John Symonds, was a co-founder of the Independent newspaper, is executive director of the 'Larry Ellison (just the ninth-wealthiest person on earth, with a fortune of $108 billion) Foundation', & of course, father-in-law to Boris Johnson.
Larrry Ellison is an interesting chap.

In December 2018, he became a director on the board of Tesla, Inc., after purchasing 3 million sharesm & as of December 31, 2019, Ellison owns 36.2% of the shares of Oracle Corporation - the second-largest software company in the world.
Ellison has been critical of Edward Snowden, saying: "Snowden had yet to identify a single person who had been 'wrongly injured' by the NSA's data collection".

In 2014 he hosted Libertarian Republican Senator Rand Paul at a fundraiser at his home.

A short #THREAD on Boris Johnson's time as Editor of the establishment-right mouthpiece, The Spectator, Chaired by failed GB "News" Chief Andrew Neil, & owned by toxic tax-avoiding right-wing billionaire libertarian crank Frederick Barclay, who also owns The Daily Telegraph.
Before joining The Spectator as editor, Boris Johnson had worked for Murdoch's Times, & the Barclay Brothers' Daily Telegraph. He had also briefly been political commentator for The Spectator under Dominic Lawson.

From 1999, Johnson established himself as a "colourful" editor.
A campaign to have Johnson selected in the safe seat of Henley saw rivals anonymously smeared as 'gay, alcoholic or suspiciously left-wing', & in the 2001, Johnson was elected MP for Henley. By 2004 he was vice-chair of the Tory party, & in Michael Howard's shadow cabinet.

A few perhaps lesser known - but now revealing - quotes from sociopathic liar & Britain's worst ever PM, Boris Johnson.

On his future political career:

"My chances of being PM are about as good as the chances of finding Elvis on Mars, or my being reincarnated as an olive."
On Tony Blair:

"It is just flipping unbelievable. He is a mixture of Harry Houdini and a greased piglet. He is barely human in his elusiveness. Nailing Blair is like trying to pin jelly to a wall."
After being sacked by the then Tory leader, Michael Howard because he lied about his affair with the Deputy Editor of The Spectator, Petronella Wyatt:

"This story about my private life is fundamentally ancient. What can I say? God. It's been a bad evening."

The Spectator - voice of the establishment. 🤮
The Spectator is owned by right-wing billionaire oddball Frederick Barclay, who also owns The Daily Telegraph. Editorship is a 'Tory Who's Who' guidebook: Past editors include Boris Johnson, Charles Moore, Ian Gilmour, Iain Macleod, Nigel Lawson, & since 2009, Fraser Nelson.

'Social work & the #COVID19 pandemic: International insights' - book review by Natalia Phillips.

2020 brought a series of major international crises in the form of climate emergency, human rights violations, & the global coronavirus pandemic.

…rnals-sagepub-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.11…
These interlinked global emergencies accentuate the division & alienation of the most disadvantaged in society caused by modern capitalism.

Governments’ biopolitics surrounding #COVID19 revolves around the prioritisation of “economy” & neglect of Health & Social Care services.
Structural racism prevails & those who require state support are the ones left helpless & suffering the most in these unprecedented times.

'Social Work and the Covid-19 Pandemic' is a collection of collaborative work of many academics, social work practitioners & activists.

Throughout 2021, every right-wing “news” media outlet & politician has regularly questioned, attacked, & undermined OUR #NHS.

They argue those with the most wealth should pay more, via private health insurance, than the less wealthy.

Allow me to unpick this argument.
SOME wealth inequality is inevitable.

With caveats around those unable to work - eg carers, through disability, ill-health, age etc - it is only fair that those who work harder, have specialist skills or more responsibility, or are more creative & capable than others, earn more.
This short, accessible 2013 video about wealth inequality - since when things have got even worse - shows how inequality is at its highest point in Britain for 50 years, with the gap between rich & poor at its widest since the second world war.
