#AcademicTwitter#MLA2022 PSA and CW for English Department job seekers. This is a story in which I have gotten permission from the PH.D. student to share, though I am not going to mention specific names. It involves an English Dept. search for an ethnic studies candidate at 1/
a PWI and R1 institution in the Pacific Northwest. This Ph.D. candidate got an interview with the school and received an email on Dec. 7th from the department's admin. assistant to set up this interview and then a direct email on Dec. 10th from the chair of the search. 2/
Both these emails never reached the candidate because they were marked as spam. Now, this is the content warning for academic job seekers, because I am sorry that this will make you feel anxious to probably obsessively check your spam folder. The candidate did not see this 3/
until last week and immediately emailed. The dept. search committee refused to address this communication snafu and will not be interviewing the candidate. So here are some questions I have: 4/
In a time of pandemic, literally, when committees do not know what's going on with candidates at home (with a high likelihood of pandemic things affecting people) why did they think that two emails is all they are going to do to reach job candidates for interviews. 5/
They all submitted cvs. with contact info. beyond an email. Why did not anyone call the candidate to check in to see if they have received these emails if they had not heard anything. As I have recently been on a search committee, yes, committees can call people. 6/
In addition, email is not the guarantee that messages have been received by people. My own example: 2 months ago, I got an urgent email from a journal asking why I haven't commented on a copy editor's queries who had sent questions 2x to my email. 7/
The journal editor flagged this as urgent since she needed the copyedits within 24 hours. I did not receive these emails. I responded and we worked out a way for me to get it to the next stage in publication. She thought the emails may have gone to spam. They were not there. 8/
They, in fact, never reached me because the security filters on my institutional email flagged them as suspicious. So I never received these emails. So, this is the PSA. SEARCH COMMITTEES, use all the ways you need to contact and communicate with your candidates and FOLLOW-UP 9/
If they have not responded. In an academic environment with a scarcity of jobs, with all that has happened to try to dismantle the humanities, the universities, and COVID-19, the ongoing fight for racial justice, etc. DO NOT BE THIS SEARCH COMMITTEE have the due diligence to 10/
to make sure you are communicating w/ people. This was, and never was, the PH.D. student's fault in any way. Things, including communication snafus, can happen. This should not even have been an issue if someone had just followed up by picking up a phone. Fin.
Part II. Thread. Medieval White Rage & the Alt-Medieval. #MedievalTwitter#ShakeRace#RaceB4Race#LitPOC I reference Carol Anderson's work b/c she points to how far white grievance will go into violent white rage during Jim Crow & school desegregation. What will white ppl do 27/
if their white privilege & place in their world is seen as "threatened" by BIPOC ppl. They will push back but they also will go to white rage violence to stop it & the change for equity & justice. Medieval Studies has an entire alt-medieval group entirely based on white rage 28/
This next example shows how white "leftists" become radicalized into the far-right universe. Tom McMaster, a.k.a. Gay Girl in Damascus. "Amina" was seen by online activists as queer Islamic feminist activist. Of course it was a racist catfish 29/ theguardian.com/world/2011/jun…
So ppl still friends w/ this alt-medieval lot & supporting them digitally & F2F & ppl who call out trying to out pseudonymous accts as VIOLENCE, Halsall was fine violently outing MRO's previous account even though he knew about her violent stalkers. 9/
I believe PH taped me at @IMC_Leeds in 2018 since he was at both my advertised sessions. Milo wrote a 13,000 hit piece on me (a bad diss. chapter on mysticism) & released the illegal tape of me & @prof_gabriele 10/
I wrote about all of that here in 2018. One of the points I made was how this WS medieval 4chan group basically uses the tactics of the far right--11/ insidehighered.com/views/2018/08/…
I have an excellent therapist, but it's still trauma work. I discuss this in this podcast which dropped this month. So this entire alt-medieval group have their own medieval, white supremacist 4chan space called Medieval Studies: State of the Field. 2/ podcast.digitalmedievalist.org/episode-5-glob…
Paul Halsall started it b/c he couldn't stop himself from saying racist things @ me & other BIPOC medievalists in medieval FB groups. He got kicked out. The group includes Rachel Fulton Brown. Academic medievalists have been talking & liking her comments there for years. 3/
#MedievalTwitter#ShakeRace#RaceB4Race#LitPOC This is a PSA for an incident that happened earlier that smacked of some overt misogynoir. A bunch of those tweets have been erased but I am tweeting now to discuss some things related to ideas of BIPOC scholars & "rigor." 1/
#MedievalTwitter#ShakeRace#RaceB4Race#LitPOC There are certain premodern study "skills" or "areas" that white premodern studies loves to wave around as the only way to go & use it as some sort of cudgel for gatekeeping that smacks of a kind of "white premodern only" 2/
#MedievalTwitter#ShakeRace#RaceB4Race#LitPOC so people are in "shock" when premodern BIPOC scholars actually have these skills and in spades. One of them is often book history, material book culture, paleography etc. But the other one discussed is "philology". 3/
Anatomy of Disinformation (Academic, small-scale ecosystem style) A Long, long Thread. 1/
I have mostly been away from Twitter this week b/c personal/family/work stuff including looming work deadlines, end of semester teaching/meetings/etc., and now I am managing not just childcare, but eldercare, so I literally am living the Gen-X sandwich life. 2/
I am having to write this thread while still dealing w/ all this b/c apparently the way to stir up the premodern pot is to somehow announce that I am “bullying” or “harassing” someone when there is no evidence at all for it. 3/
#MedievalTwitter#ShakeRace#RaceB4Race This is a long thread that addresses Safety & Secret FB Groups: There are two separate things happening that Abby Ang has conflated as one thing. The secret FB group is separate from the scholarly activist org. Medievalists of Color.
2/ This is made clear in the Constitution. The secret FB group is there for different BIPOC scholars in medieval studies as a safe space to share safety information, safety resources, address potential violence or other harms targeting various group members;
3/it includes sensitive personal information in the group. In fact, the group often has multiple messages about potential fascist security issues at medieval studies conferences to warn other potential vulnerable group members.Moderators sponsor members; It is not open to anyone.
