Apparently Novak Djokovic has joined the disability community now and people are getting all judgy but I’m prepared to take you on face value so here’s a welcome note to our world @DjokerNole#tennisaustralia (Thread).
You may notice a swirl of strangers coming in and out of your house every day. Sometimes the people that turn up might not be the people expected. How exciting! Some will wear masks or be vaxxed and others might try & choose not to. But hey I know you’re down with choice
You are entitled to rapid antigen tests to see if these people are carrying a plague that might kill you. You can get five! Like just five. Not in a week. 5. After applying through Centrelink. And then waiting for the money to come. And then trying to find one.
We have a national supply and distribution centre for emergency health equipment. It’s called Harvey Norman.
Welcome to the Disability Support Pension and @centrelinkgovau. If you thought playing a grand slam for six hours on a clay court in 45° heat was hard you ain’t seen nothing yet
Suggested sporting equipment for playing against @centrelinkgovau includes a large filing cabinet and a welfare rights lawyer
If you receive a letter of demand for $70,000 from a debt collector hired by the Australian Government for the one hour of consumer representative work you did in 1997 just pay it. It’s not like the government would try to deliberately defraud you. Sheesh.
We have a disability support scheme called @NDIS. It could be great but it changes constantly & govt keeps trying to slash it. It’s not like managing your disabilities will involve stress, time and endless anxiety so just stay on top of that will you? It’s great to have a hobby
You’re about to be surveyed a LOT. Because we need to be seen to care about what you say. Consultations, questionnaires, interviews, endless meetings - it never ends. And it’s free! After all that I’m surprised you’ve got time for tennis and that’s why you’re such an inspiration
You might be an international tennis star, highly successful and a multi millionaire but the @AusBorderForce still thinks you’re a giant waste of space likely to be a drain on taxpayers. So we won’t let people like you into the country.
But please don’t take this personally. We will love and value you on 3 December each year and only on this day. Happy #IDPWD and welcome to our world 🌎[The End - Literally]

A true story from my life which shows why disabled people are terrified at the prospect of winding up in hospital due to #COVID19. And it’s not because we are ‘sicker’ than you (thread)
Last year I started experiencing chest pains on the right side of my chest. I put off doing anything for weeks. In denial. Worried about how the hell I would get by in an inaccessible hospital environment. Also I’m a bloke so hey.
Finally it got too much. Feeling faint, shortness of breath and dizziness. Pain on other side of chest. Where actual heart is. I packed a bag. I wrote a will and left it on my computer keyboard. Said goodbye to house. I went in by taxi.
Just for a bit of balance when I was trying to get out of special ‘schooling’ in the 1980s none of the local public schools in Campbelltown NSW would take me. Only a local Marist school was accessible & made the effort #schools#education
The principal of one public school looked at me, snorted and said ‘well what are we going to do with this little problem hey?’
The second public school said I’d have to skip maths & science classes and do them in a corridor or the library
