Ok, this is the topic y’all chose, so here’s a thread on how COVID may likely be the final death knell of the Church.

A Thread:
So as you may be aware, church/religious affiliation fell below 50% for the first time in 2021. (washingtonpost.com/religion/2021/…)

This is the result of decades long disillusionment but COVID put this sentiment into overdrive. Hashtags on Tiktok and Twitter like #exvangelical
Offer a window into those who watched their church communities completely disregarded the pandemic, abandon their mandate for community care and leave medically vulnerable people to die.

Even with that in mind, the pandemic could push church membership off a cliff’s edge.
Researchers estimate that anywhere from 1/4-1/3 of all people with COVID—whether symptomatic or asymptomatic—will experience long lasting illness or disability. (scientificamerican.com/article/a-tsun…)

This will be a huge problem. Back in the 80s and 90s religious leaders actually advocated
To be exempt from the ADA. (sojo.net/articles/resis…) Currently, at the federal level religious organizations are exempt with several states having their own legal requirements for church accessibility.
Though physical accessibility is a major issue in religious spaces, it is often the attitudes of congregants that make these spaces inhospitable to disabled people. Anecdotally, I haven’t met a single disabled person who has not been prayed over for a cure.

Often assisting the
“Prosperity Gospel” is the belief that faith is the only thing needed for healing/health.

Many are told that disabilities are a result of a lack of faith or dedication to the church.

Often, there is no incentive for these institutions to change because inclusion can be seen
As the reward of faith based healing.

In 2018, a survey found that children are 14% more likely to have never attended church and 1/3 of parents of disabled children have had to move churches because they were not included (disabilityscoop.com/2018/10/01/whe…).
The combination of disillusionment, physical inaccessibility, ableist attitudes and lack of inclusion could mean that religious organizations will see a significant drop off in membership leading to an even greater number of those who are religiously unaffiliated. /fin

I see where you’re coming from, but that’s not the lens through which I’m looking at this.

For me, this is the continuation of the disillusionment people have with their employers.

In the communication of both their recruitment and internal messaging, many of these
Companies insist that “here, we’re family” or “you are a part of something greater.” Sentiments of closeness to further an employees’ productivity.

In essence, what the CDC has done, yet again, is forced these companies to prove these sentiments. The bare minimum is not enough
This is life or death for millions. What the CDC guidance has done is presented the employers with the bare minimum justification to keep their businesses open. This means that it’s up to businesses to “do the right thing” which they have refused.

The facade is breaking even

So every time I mention the increase in disabled people due to COVID, someone inevitably says that it means that more people will be disability advocates.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I have a little wine in me so gird your loins, my friends.

TW: Eugenics, Suicide
So keep in mind that I was born with my disability, so most of what I’m about to say are observations from my advocacy work.

Not a lot of people consider themselves as disabled from the onset of their condition. Some never do. In fact, the onset of the pandemic may have been
The first time a lot of people told anyone about their conditions and that was because employers were playing with their lives in regards to lockdowns.

You have to keep in mind that much of our understanding of disability surrounds capitalism, so in becoming disabled, the

Only 5% of homes in the US are accessible.

26% of the population had a disability prior to the pandemic.

1/4 of all COVID cases (symptomatic or not) will experience long term effects/disability.

Based on todays count of COVID cases (50mil) that’s 12.5 million more people.
At this point if you’re not building for accessibility, you’re either just an ass or bad at your job.

So a few people have asked for the list ™️, so here is an easily shareable version:

Why I can’t stand Yt vegans: a thread
1.Main organizing principle is whiteness, if you really cared about preservation and the end of animal cruelty, you’d turn over your family lands and capital to indigenous folk and leave.
2.Y’all keep comparing animal cruelty to slavery which makes it sound like y’all think the enslaved were animals which is rooted in white saviorism .
