Hey, wanna see how a 1960 Soviet comic imagined the year 2017?
You are in luck...
Here is a Soviet schoolboy, waking up in the morning thanks to an awesome piece of 2017 technology, a wall clock with a robotic arm that flicks his nose.
It's time for breakfast and Igor (a terrible inaccuracy here, as the writer failed to predict the popularity of archaic Russian names in the XXI c.; the kid should be Kuzma or Frol) uses a "smart kitchen machine" that reads a recipe scribbled on a piece of paper to prepare a meal
Paper, of course, was one thing that Soviet sci-fi writers could never imagine would go obsolete. Same as 1960s fashions. Here you see fedoraed Soviets reading a newspaper "about the newest achievements of Soviet science" (which don't include an iPad, I presume).
Never fear, though. Soviet science is as formidable as ever. Here are photon rockets speeding toward Alpha Centauri. Probably to build socialism.
Of course, a rocket this big requires huge amounts of photons or something. And to produce it, the rocket must carry LOTS of coal.
Yes, coal is another thing that will be going strong in 2017 (fact check: accurate), but so much more of it will be needed.
Which is why the USSR will have built a whole city, Coalgrad, underground in Siberia, where lucky workers will be able to mine it year round.
It goes without saying that the USSR has re-annexed Alaska and built a dam across the Bering Strait in order to, obviously, change climate and improve the weather in the Soviet Far East, presumably to convert Gulags to summer labor.
Soviets are bigly into fucking with weather in 2017. Here is their flying saucer weather control station capable of destroying hurricanes. It's controlled via a radical XXI century communication device, radio.
But its main purpose is to ensure clear skies over Moscow for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.
This is celebrated as "a great victory of Soviet science over nature." Because nature is a ruthless enemy that must be destroyed.
But not the only one!
Oh no, the last remaining imperialists on Earth, secluded on a tiny Pacific island (they are quite shitty at imperialism, looks like), have tested a secret weapon and blew themselves the fuck away!
Good riddance, but this may spoil the glorious celebration!
But never fear! Igor's father, The Main Glorious Soviet Weather Changer, has fired up his flying saucer and fucked the imperialist tsunami up.
Here he is breaking the happy news via a televideophone, to his female comrade and their less useful children.
Benevolent Soviet shock workers are back to their usual glorious exploits.
Such as removing "unneeded hills" with targeted atomic explosions.
... or turning huge Siberian rivers the fuck around so they could flow to places more useful to glorious Soviet industry.
Man, 2017 USSR as imagined in 1960 is a wet Republican dream.
And let's not forget creating Supervillainmobiles of Horrors that glorious Soviet shock workers will ride to the center of the earth to tap resources of eternal energy.
Fuck nature, Comrades. Fuck it in every possible opening in the Earth's crust!
All hail glorious Soviet science superheroes, the destroyers of evil nature and the mighty huggers of Young Communist Pioneers.
The year 2017 will be the mightiest and the most glorious since the Red October!

There is NOTHING I want more (well, OK, with the exception of my kids' becoming international sex symbols) than teaching in person. Nothing. I dread the return to online learning.
But if it means life and death to some aged and sick colleagues, why is this a controversy?
Moreover, why is this a political thing? Because teachers' unions support Democrats? Well, fuck me, why shouldn't they, if the GOP is singlemindedly dedicated to eradicating public education?
For some reason nobody questions police unions' full-throated support of Republicans.
Democrats don't want to destroy the police force (not mainstream Democrats at least), but the GOP is fully dedicated to making sure public schools are extinct. Of course our unions vote blue.
But protecting health and safety of members is not a right-left issue. Or shouldn't be.
The reason Joe can't find agreement with ex-supporters is because US politics have long ago stopped being a discourse on nation improvement and turned into team sports.
And the reason this happened predates Trump by at least 3 decades. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk have made it so.
Sports fans don't care who plays for their team. The guy can be a major asshole or a criminal, but if he can whack the thingy into the doodad and help beat the guys in differently colored clothes, he is good and opposing him is bad.
Sports fans are cultish, irrational and shrill.
Example. I've been pointing out that Ovechkin is a Putin flunkie, that he is an active cheerleader for a war Putin has been waging in Europe for the last 8 years, but how many hockey fans care?
Their argument is always the same: "But greatest pucky shooter ever! Lol, here is gif"
This requires a mini thread to explain.
First of all, this is the heady days of perestroika. "Videomagnitophones" have just appeared, illicitly, in enterprising Soviet citizens' hands, but they still don't know they are called VCRs. Many don't have PAL-SECAM decoders...
... which means all pirated video fare is in black and white. But those who manage to procure the vaunted equipment, open a "video salon."
Here is how it worked.
First, the pirated American movie featuring either Schwarzenegger/Stalone/Bruce Lee or Debbie Does Dallas is dubbed...
All of them, every single one, in every possible genre, is dubbed by a single man, named Volodarsky. Volodarsky has an incredible work ethic but zero voice actor talent. All of the characters, male, female and alien, sound exactly the same - like Volodarsky in real life...
So, since today we had extremely low attendance numbers, I didn't teach my classes any math and instead had them play Survivor Jeopardy, a trivia game cobbled together from two TV shows I have never, ever watched.
Either way, I came up with the questions and... oh boy...
First of all, disclaimers: 1) lots of fun was had and everyone enjoyed it, 2) I love my students to death.
Now, the conclusion:
Every single stereotype about Americans and general knowledge that doesn't involve pop culture and like, I don't know, peanut butter flavors, is correct
To get things started off on the right foot, I chose the easiest question imaginable: "What is the capital of Hungary."
Among answers:
* ?
* What is Hungary?
* Czesh
* Italy
One person did identify Budapest, but probably thanks to his phone.
Nobody should have ever doubted that Trump is an anti-Semite. To be sure, he loves those Jews who are loyal or useful to him, but he is thoroughly beholden to Jewish stereotypes and more than willing to propagate them and act on them.
But, let's talk about Jews and Trump...
Because, for me, as a Soviet Jewish immigrant, it was always quite striking just how different American Jews were in their worldview.
Of course, it's not a surprise that there are really only two categories of Jews in America who are rabidly pro-Trump: ultra-Orthodox and Soviet
The Ultra-Orthodox love Trump and the right wing because they are more than happy with brutal, theocratic authoritarianism, as their strict interpretation of the Bible basically commands it. And, of course, they are all for genocidal solutions to the Palestinian question...
Yes, @RadioFreeTom is right. Putin is exactly that: the picture of cheap, insecure masculinity, rattling weapons, being offended at everything, holding a perpetual grudge, dreaming of revenge and constantly riling against "others" and in defense of the "oppressed white men."
Folks in the West tend to romanticize the KGB, but Putin is not some brilliantly Machiavellian spymaster. He was a low-level intelligence paper-pusher, talentless, disrespected, completely unremarkable, graduating from the service to become St. Petersburg mayor's bagman.
Here is your evil genius in the 90s, perpetually in the shadow of the bigger-than-life mayor, meekly carrying his documents, looking every inch the loser he was.
His biggest talent was for shady land speculation. This is what got him to where he is now.
