So, since today we had extremely low attendance numbers, I didn't teach my classes any math and instead had them play Survivor Jeopardy, a trivia game cobbled together from two TV shows I have never, ever watched.
Either way, I came up with the questions and... oh boy...
First of all, disclaimers:
1) lots of fun was had and everyone enjoyed it,
2) I love my students to death.
Now, the conclusion:
Every single stereotype about Americans and general knowledge that doesn't involve pop culture and like, I don't know, peanut butter flavors, is correct
To get things started off on the right foot, I chose the easiest question imaginable: "What is the capital of Hungary."
Among answers:
* ?
* What is Hungary?
* Czesh
* Italy
One person did identify Budapest, but probably thanks to his phone.
I tried to switch gears and went for history.
"What century did Louis XIV die in?"
Here, I had near-universal agreement: the 19th.
🤦
Fuck! I had to come up with something hip, young and current.
"What is Beyonce's last name"
* She doesn't have one
* Carter
* Who?
OK, then. Who was the 39th president?
* JFK
* Reagan
* Obama
* Trump
Not a good tactic.
What city are the next Olympics in?
* Tokyo
* Baltimore
* ?
* ?
And
* ?
"What is the sine of this angle (drew a triangle)?" was not a great hit either. "Name one country that borders Italy" produced a worrying abundance of Germanies. And not a single soul could identify Canada as the world's second largest country.
Sorry, Canada.
This proves to me that what was considered absolutely essential and common knowledge to 1980s Soviet children, who grew up with 2 TV channels and newspapers named "Labor", "Labor Woman" and "Proletarian Health" is utterly beyond XXI century American children.
I feel old. So old.
PS. "What continent is Azerbaijan in?" (I would've accepted either Europe or Asia) produced hearty laughter and universal agreement that Azerbaijan is not a thing.
Which, I guess, fair enough.

This requires a mini thread to explain.
First of all, this is the heady days of perestroika. "Videomagnitophones" have just appeared, illicitly, in enterprising Soviet citizens' hands, but they still don't know they are called VCRs. Many don't have PAL-SECAM decoders...
... which means all pirated video fare is in black and white. But those who manage to procure the vaunted equipment, open a "video salon."
Here is how it worked.
First, the pirated American movie featuring either Schwarzenegger/Stalone/Bruce Lee or Debbie Does Dallas is dubbed...
All of them, every single one, in every possible genre, is dubbed by a single man, named Volodarsky. Volodarsky has an incredible work ethic but zero voice actor talent. All of the characters, male, female and alien, sound exactly the same - like Volodarsky in real life...

Nobody should have ever doubted that Trump is an anti-Semite. To be sure, he loves those Jews who are loyal or useful to him, but he is thoroughly beholden to Jewish stereotypes and more than willing to propagate them and act on them.
But, let's talk about Jews and Trump...
Because, for me, as a Soviet Jewish immigrant, it was always quite striking just how different American Jews were in their worldview.
Of course, it's not a surprise that there are really only two categories of Jews in America who are rabidly pro-Trump: ultra-Orthodox and Soviet
The Ultra-Orthodox love Trump and the right wing because they are more than happy with brutal, theocratic authoritarianism, as their strict interpretation of the Bible basically commands it. And, of course, they are all for genocidal solutions to the Palestinian question...

Yes, @RadioFreeTom is right. Putin is exactly that: the picture of cheap, insecure masculinity, rattling weapons, being offended at everything, holding a perpetual grudge, dreaming of revenge and constantly riling against "others" and in defense of the "oppressed white men."
Folks in the West tend to romanticize the KGB, but Putin is not some brilliantly Machiavellian spymaster. He was a low-level intelligence paper-pusher, talentless, disrespected, completely unremarkable, graduating from the service to become St. Petersburg mayor's bagman.
Here is your evil genius in the 90s, perpetually in the shadow of the bigger-than-life mayor, meekly carrying his documents, looking every inch the loser he was.
His biggest talent was for shady land speculation. This is what got him to where he is now.

So, guys, let's have a conversation about #2A. We are way, way, way overdue to take an honest, harsh look at it. And since y'all native-borns are unwilling to, let me, a naturalized American, with a wider perspective and a harsher life experience do it for you.
🧵
To be sure, there are many parts of the Constitution that are obsolete, dumb, unfair and/or dangerous. For example, the provision that limits presidency eligibility only to those who exited the birth canal within America's borders fit neatly into the middle two categories...
Let's face it, nobody is quartering soldiers in your house either, though I have a feeling that if they wanted to, they would, amendments be damned.
In short, shockingly, folks in periwigs and "small clothes" writing shit with quills in the XVIII c. didn't anticipate many things.

An important message. No sports movie in history has done more to advance antisemitic stereotypes than The Mighty Ducks, which is by no means surprising, considering it's by Disney.
This film is shameful and wrong on so many levels that this particular crime is often overlooked.
OK, so, first off, I hope it's not a surprising opinion that the entire MD franchise is chuck full of racism. It often frames entire storylines and serves as a backbone of plots. I mean, behold the Ducks' Oreo Line! The film just tells you right off the bat: it's racist af.
It goes without saying that all "ethnic" players on the Ducks rigidly conform to whatever racial stereotype was just on the right side of acceptable in the early 90s. Which, to be sure, is extremely unacceptable. I mean, yeah, black kids aren't outright gobbling watermelons, but

The Russian word for a sports fan is "bolel'shchik." I'll explain in a minute. But first, did you know that for a long time Americans had no word for it?
Sports fans appeared in the US in the 1850s, but the word didn't come about until early XX c..
Until baseball began to proliferate in NYC and people began to support teams from their neighborhoods, their only interest in sports was betting. The concept of following a team over a period of time with nothing at stake except emotional investment was utterly new...
So, for a long time, folks who weren't into this culture, just assumed these were some new type of gamblers. This is how they were described in newspapers. Eventually, the word "fanatic" was used.
This, of course, tells us something about the prevailing emotion in the stands...
