"The main reason why large parts of the country, including Ontario and Quebec, are repeatedly being put into severe lockdowns compared to other comparable, developed countries is due to
the chronic lack of surge capacity in our hospitals, due to a combination of decades or provincial & federal gov't underfunding and administrative incompetence." Nobody I know inside the system denies Lorrie Goldstein's observation. It's not some ideological twit's talking point.
I'm not big on vaccine hesitancy, refusal or resistance. Nothing in my record shows me faking respect for the decision not to get vaxxed, unless a serious doctor is advising their patient against it because of health issues. But let's tell the whole truth.
Truth isn't left or right wing. It's just the truth. The reason we need to lock down more than most other countries is because there has been hesitation/refusal/resistance to properly fund our hospital system. If food distribution in Canada operated like our hospital system,
most of us would have to travel long distances to a handful of supermarkets, where we would line up for hours. Once inside we would find very little selection on half empty shelves. This pandemic has forced us to look at our ancient, tired, and creaky hospital system.
The virus has delivered an MRI of the system and the scan tells us the patient is sick-ill equipped for 2022 and beyond. Everyone I talk to with very little knowledge of the system's architecture is stunned to discover that even in our most densely populated regions,
ICU capacity isn't in the thousands. It's only in hundreds. A long long time ago I was doing TV News full time. I had a side hustle as a country deejay, every Sunday in Toronto. I called myself Billy Nelson. One my favorite tunes that I never tired of, was by Willie Nelson.
"My Heroes have always been Cowboys." Well for the last couple of years my heroes have been Health Care Workers - HCWs - They have been worked to the bone physically and emotionally. And no matter how exhausted they are, mainly because we haven't hired nearly enough of them,
they continue to be disrespected in the worst way - a miserly lack of gratitude from us. The gratitude deficit is plain for any curious eye to see. But it needs to be said that right now the most blatant, flagrant & vulgar lack of gratitude is the decision not to get vaxxed.
The decision to remain unvaccinated is not being made in a vacuum. The poor choice that creates a burden on our Health Care Heroes, is too often driven by another poor choice -becoming a dupe for disinformation peddled by religious charlatans, political hustlers, & media whores.
As angered as I want to be about the unvaccinated and the parasites who feed off them, the issue continues to be a distraction from the larger issue that arrived long before the virus. We don't have enough health care professionals and equipment - we don't have enough capacity.
Right now we have hockey being played in empty arenas. Empty arenas, empty schools, empty restaurants, empty work places. It's the world's worst reality show, written and produced by a virus that won't break and a hospital system that's broken.
I love my country. I adore my fellow Canadians. I don't hate my government. But I hate living like this. We stand on the shoulders of generations who braved bitter winters, isolation, disease and drought. They busted through mountains of rock to build railroads and highways.
Canadians have fought wars where we always punched above our weight. We have been too brave to be this timid. We have to stop starting our national conversation with the worst yarn ever! Let's stop repeating these words. "Canada has the best health care system in the world."
We don't. Saying so won't make it so. Don't take it from me. Just listen to the sounds of empty, the sounds of silence. Let's take a look at the great big hole in our social safety net. Let's be brave about looking around the world with an open mind.
There is no lockdown more lethal to a country than the shuttering of the national imagination. Let's look at the whole world and learn from the best. Canadians succeed when we lead with curiosity, generosity and humility. Let's never lock down the best of who we are.

I thought, based on my experience of Polio #Vaccines in the early 60s, that ultimately this is what the world would do to protect everyone. Never occurred to me that I had a right to carry a virus that can hurt you & your family. That's a very big burden I don't want to carry.
We live in a strange world. Really smart people are saying We will just have to live with Covid for the rest of our lives. And so we will just have to live with public health rules/issues (a) masking (b)distancing (c) regular booster shots (d) extremely long waits for surgeries.
So we are told just accept it, deal with it, surrender to it. Why? Well because we can never ensure that enough of the population is vaccinated. Why? Well because we certainly can't mandate vaccinations? Why. Well because of vigorous push back from the anti science crowd.

#BreakingNews: New rules for travel into the U-S may shut down many travel plans during the Christmas/Holiday Season. From the @washingtonpost "The Biden admin is preparing stricter testing requirements for all travelers entering the U-S, including returning Americans,
to curb the spread of the potentially dangerous omicron variant, according to three federal health officials. As part of an enhanced winter covid strategy Biden plans to announce on Thursday, U.S. officials will require everyone entering the country to be tested
one day before boarding flights, regardless of their vaccination status or country of departure. Administration officials are also considering a requirement that all travelers get retested within three to five days of arrival.

Reading over the wknd that in one of the most highly educated nations on earth, Austria, only 65% of the people are fully vaccinated. Seems far right politics is effective at disseminating the same disinformation that contaminates too many Canadians.
If the far right can stop millions from saving their own lives w vaccines, what can't they stop? And if the majorities in our many educated societies don't take disinformation campaigns seriously, what has to happen to make them understand how much this threatens democracy?
We shouldn't need an international summit to teach us that the fastest way to destroy democracy is to continue to believe that we need to respect all who express an opinion. Why offer respect to those who have wittingly or unwittingly been recruited by the disinformation army?

Thread from @JessLReid "Like so many Canadians, I grew up consuming dairy, believing it to be an essential food. I never considered where it came from, beyond the cow who obviously just made milk for people."
"But undercover footage from an organic dairy farm in B.C., recently obtained and published by Animal Justice, exposed what I learned later in life: cows don’t make milk for us, they make it for their babies."
"And as part of standard farming practices, those newborn calves must be removed from their mothers in order for that milk to be rerouted for human consumption."

There has never been a day when I haven't been proud to be Canadian. But on this day, September 25, 2021, I am particularly proud of my country that refused to forget the names of two ordinary Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, the two #Michaels
who 1000 days ago were in the wrong place at the wrong time, taken by force and deprived of their human rights by the regime in Beijing that stole their freedom, put them in solitary confinement, forced them to endure a sham trial -convicted them for crimes they never committed.
Indeed the convictions themselves were crimes that continue to go unpunished in a world where expectations are low of countries governed by those who without the capacity to care about morality & humanity, only ideology & power. But on this day, Saturday, September 25th, 2021,

#ErinOToole is pledging to get the national vaccination rate above 90%. On motivating the unvaccinated, the #CPC leader says "You don't win people over by threatening them. You win them over by reaching out, talking to them, understanding their fears, answering their questions..
We need to persuade every Canadian that vaccines are safe, effective and our best route out of this crisis." #ErinOToole Dear Mr. O'Toole. Nobody is threatening the unvaccinated. They are threatening us. Vaccines are the only way out of the crisis. The science is crystal clear.
Every reasonable person knows it. For those who choose to remain unvaccinated, the only way to "secure the future" as you like to say, is to deprive them of privileges & opportunities to work & socialize with the rest of us. That means mandates.
