Why can some people quickly memorize other people's names and I can't?

It's not that I haven't tried...

It's because I have severe problems with memorizing names.

Thankfully, I've never forgotten my wife's name.

Can you imagine?

Anywho, here's how I fixed this predicament.
I like it when people like me.

And I've noticed that the perfect way to make people like you is by calling them by their names.

Like when I correctly pronounced the name of a guy I wanted to hire.
His eyeballs almost came out of his eye sockets when I said his name on that dreamy day during our zoom call.

After hearing me, he said, "nobody has ever pronounced my name correctly on the first try."

BAM! Easy!

Still here with me?

Cool. Let's get back to the main story.
While trying to fix my memorization issue, I leapfrogged into the most bizarre rabbit hole I've ever gotten into.

... and I've read about the conspiracy of Lizard people inside the hollow earth (which is BS, of course).
During my research, I got obsessed with a book called 'Moonwalking With Einstein' by Joshua Foer.

This book talks about how weirdos... I mean... 'mental athletes' memorize faster.
I'm talking about galaxy-brained individuals that memorize the order of hundreds of random playing cards and a bunch of other useless facts.

But there's one thing that caught my attention about them.
You guessed it.

They have the skill of memorizing people's names.

Hundreds of people's names.

And it's easy, really.

Let me show you.
The trick is to imagine an object that reminds you of the person's name.

But here's the catch.
To make the name stick inside your brain, you must imagine an extremely bizarre connection between the person and the object.

For example, for Margarita (the name) you could imagine her drowning in a massive Margarita cocktail

Weird stuff, I tell you.
Thanks to this silly book, I learned to memorize names.

Because that's actually a useful skill.

On the other hand, if schools wanted you smarter, they would stop asking you to memorize which dinosaurs were herbivores.

I battled with anxiety during all my 20s.

But after setting these 5 rules, I've stopped feeling anxious.

thread
Here's some background:

I don't remember ever feeling like shit as a teenager.

It seems all the bullshit I ate and the lack of exercise bubbled up once I turned 20 by manifesting itself as anxiety, brain fog, low energy...
Now that I'm in my thirties, I've tried my best to take care of my health.

I don't feel immortal anymore as I did when I was 20.

You're reading tons of books.

You're watching many courses.

You're trying countless different things at the same time.

But...

You're not experiencing any kind of progress.

Sound familiar?
Back in 2017, I was stuck in this downward spiral too.

I was "learning" new stuff from a bunch of influencers I followed.

After a while, I realized that I was spending time "learning" as a way to procrastinate.
"Learning" feels like progress

So you lie to ourselves to keep learning

But in reality, you're procrastinating

So you'll say, "man, this is so cool! I'll add this new automation to my emails list. I'll make sure to put this in my new sales funnel. I'm gonna make the bank!"

I paid my personal trainer $80 for a customized diet plan.

He confessed it took him 15 minutes to craft.

That's a whole lot of money where I'm from, the Dominican Republic.

(That's almost half the minimum wage)

Anywho...
I'm not complaining.

And there's a reason why.

Here's what you didn't see him doing:

- 5 years of daily practice and reading
- A whole lot of endured pain
- Tons of rejection
- Being ridiculed by his family
He persevered despite the pain and rejection.

He delayed gratification.

He educated himself.

And, today, he's winning...

Anything can become content.

Let me show you.
The bad shit that happened to you? That's content.

Like for example that time you froze in front of your class and got so embarrassed you decided to learn public speaking.

This would be a great story to inspire and teach public speaking or how to beat social anxiety.
Or when your thread didn't get engagement? Content.

Like when you spent 3 hours editing a thread that nobody saw.

But the one you wrote off the cuff went viral.

Therefore realizing that being authentic is extremely important online.

Years ago, I got an email.

Its subject line read, "The company must survive."

The next day, half the staff was fired – Including your truly.

All of this happened at the worst time possible.

At a time, I had a 6- month old kid.

But life has its own ways of surprising you:
Before I had my online business, I avoided taking risks.

I thought I was betting on myself by being a good employee.

So I tried to be the best employee.

Overdelivering. Promising impossible deadlines. Working late.

But I did so because I was afraid.
But I did so because I was afraid.

Afraid of pain.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid of judgment
