Slava's Correct Culture Take.
The entirety of Russian classical literature is mind-numbing, hopeless, grotesquely verbose, self-important borefest, tremendously overhyped by terribly depressed people with a longing to feel more cultured.
I am not joking.
Dostoyevsky couldn't construct a believable plot, would never be bothered to come up with a three-dimensional character, made all women look like his two lovers and basically delivered his own half-insane sermons, without even disguising them as dialogue...
Tolstoy had a slightly better ability to tell stories, but could not stop himself from ejaculating a trainload of stupid and unnecessary philosophy all over them in random places, because he honestly didn't trust the reader to just figure his thoughts out through the plot...
Chekhov had only two modes: depressing and suicidal, and his true genius was to convince people that his moody-teenager bitchy bullshit about supremely unlikeable people is ingenious comedy and/or satire...
Gogol could do both plot and humor, but could not escape being depressing either. The one time he tried to write an uplifting story, it came out as blathering Czarist propaganda chock-full of anti-Semitism, where the main character kills his own son and ks burned alive in the end
Chernyshevsky could not write and should have been issued a restraining order from stationery by the courts. Full stop.
Turgenev could bore the knickers off a Puritan preacher's wife, which he would never do, because, according to his stories, every single woman is a tender virgin ready to faint on command. His endless descriptions of fucking birch trees are more interesting. And they are torture.
Lermontov and Pushkin should have stuck to verse, because their prose is outrageously mediocre, and Lermontov's in particular could have been written by a Emo 10th-grader for a second-marking period essay without really trying too hard.
Real Russian literature begins in the XX century, when people who grew up on Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky decided that, wait a minute, couldn't we do this with, like, humor, interesting characters, engaging stories and about 170% less preaching?
Bulgakov, Zoshchenko, Ilf/Petrov, Babel
... and post-war greats like Strugatsky brothers, Dovlatov, Voinovich. And spilling into the XXI century, with (the very early) Pelevin, Akunin and Sorokin. This is where it's all at.
Leave XIX c. bullshit to pretentious bores.
True story. My only experience in stage craft was playing the main role in a Chekhov play in school. I was given it because, as the goalkeeper of the soccer team, I could be trusted to believably dive on the stage while pursuing a rabid finger-biting dog.
The dog was a pretend dog. We didn't have a dog we could trust to run across the stage and sit on it for 15 minutes. I had to dive after a pretend dog and then pretend to be mad at it.
Which still meant that the integrity of Chekhov's story or characters was in no way compromised

I can't stress this enough: he is repeating, verbatim, every single Kremlin talking point. He has been doing this for the last several years.
Tucker Carlson is either a paid or a voluntary agent of Russian influence.
This is exactly how Putin explained the annexation of Crimea: "If we didn't move in, NATO would have."
Nobody else ever used this line, since it's utter nonsense. Ukrainians wanted to leave the Russian sphere of influence and move towards democracy and European integration.
They wanted free elections, not Kremlin-appointed puppets. They wanted an end to ever-prevasive corruption, promulgated in all Putin-controlled territories. They wanted to be a free, Western nation, not another post-Soviet illiberal vassal fiefdom.
And Putin punished them for it.
Just saw Eternals, and I loved it, primarily because it's written with the explicit goal of driving Russian audiences wildly insane with rage: black people, Asian people, gay people, child people, deaf people...
Oh my. An explosion of hated "Hollywoodskaya polit-korrektnost"
Russians are probably making one of their many "our answers" (knock-offs of Hollywood films nobody outside of Russia ever watches) right now. It will feature an all-male cast of uber-Christian characters battling Deviants on top of T-34s in the name of Saint Protopop. In Crimea.
Russian Eternals will be called Alyosha (superpower: to turn stone into vodka, water into vodka, trees into vodka, celestial matter into vodka), Ilya (superpower: a big-ass tank with words "Hey, Europe, we can do it again!" on it) and Dobrynya (superpower: Christianity).
Hey, wanna see how a 1960 Soviet comic imagined the year 2017?
You are in luck...
Here is a Soviet schoolboy, waking up in the morning thanks to an awesome piece of 2017 technology, a wall clock with a robotic arm that flicks his nose.
It's time for breakfast and Igor (a terrible inaccuracy here, as the writer failed to predict the popularity of archaic Russian names in the XXI c.; the kid should be Kuzma or Frol) uses a "smart kitchen machine" that reads a recipe scribbled on a piece of paper to prepare a meal
There is NOTHING I want more (well, OK, with the exception of my kids' becoming international sex symbols) than teaching in person. Nothing. I dread the return to online learning.
But if it means life and death to some aged and sick colleagues, why is this a controversy?
Moreover, why is this a political thing? Because teachers' unions support Democrats? Well, fuck me, why shouldn't they, if the GOP is singlemindedly dedicated to eradicating public education?
For some reason nobody questions police unions' full-throated support of Republicans.
Democrats don't want to destroy the police force (not mainstream Democrats at least), but the GOP is fully dedicated to making sure public schools are extinct. Of course our unions vote blue.
But protecting health and safety of members is not a right-left issue. Or shouldn't be.
The reason Joe can't find agreement with ex-supporters is because US politics have long ago stopped being a discourse on nation improvement and turned into team sports.
And the reason this happened predates Trump by at least 3 decades. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk have made it so.
Sports fans don't care who plays for their team. The guy can be a major asshole or a criminal, but if he can whack the thingy into the doodad and help beat the guys in differently colored clothes, he is good and opposing him is bad.
Sports fans are cultish, irrational and shrill.
Example. I've been pointing out that Ovechkin is a Putin flunkie, that he is an active cheerleader for a war Putin has been waging in Europe for the last 8 years, but how many hockey fans care?
Their argument is always the same: "But greatest pucky shooter ever! Lol, here is gif"
This requires a mini thread to explain.
First of all, this is the heady days of perestroika. "Videomagnitophones" have just appeared, illicitly, in enterprising Soviet citizens' hands, but they still don't know they are called VCRs. Many don't have PAL-SECAM decoders...
... which means all pirated video fare is in black and white. But those who manage to procure the vaunted equipment, open a "video salon."
Here is how it worked.
First, the pirated American movie featuring either Schwarzenegger/Stalone/Bruce Lee or Debbie Does Dallas is dubbed...
All of them, every single one, in every possible genre, is dubbed by a single man, named Volodarsky. Volodarsky has an incredible work ethic but zero voice actor talent. All of the characters, male, female and alien, sound exactly the same - like Volodarsky in real life...
