Keen on #edtech?

Here is the list of tools, terminologies and know-hows about #edtech.

If you are an engineer or a product manager exploring #education #tech space, this thread should help you understand the tech landscape. 🧵 1/n
1.0/ Learning systems: Your core tech offering in edtech is an LMS(learning management system), that includes authoring, content delivery along with learning enrolment, consumption and assessment. I highly recommend exploring Moodle before you build or explore any other LMS.
1.1/ If you need your own LMS to deliver a course, and yet have a strong customisable platform, you should consider @moodle. It's an #opensource, actively developed, good dev community and a lot of freelancers who can help you customise. Moodle is the WordPress of edtech.
1.2/ If your use case is a microlearning delivery, checkout @adaptlearning , it's a simple very well-architected authoring and delivery platform. There are plenty of hosted solutions available in case you are looking at selling your courses online.
2.0/ Interactive content: Delivering content in the right format is key for pedagogy delivery. Be it multiple-choice or true-false check for an understanding check, it can be flashcards for recall or sequencing for context building - delivery format makes lots of difference.
2.1 H5P.org is an open-source content creation framework that supports ~50 formats. I've been using h5p for 5 years and they've been releasing great stuff h5p.org/roadmap . You can create H5P in multiple CMS and host them on multiple LMSs including moodle
3/ Source Code: Lesser known fact about @khanacademy is their git repo. They've open-sourced all their innovation. Their ML tools(guacamole), exercise builder( perseus), math library(kmath), and other content editing and rendering are some of the great repos to look at.
4/Architecture & Standards: If u are building an activity bank/an assessment engine/content creation framework - its important to understand that u are not the first one to build. Over the decades' e-learning space has put together best practices, standards for interoperabilities
4.1/ Learning Record Store(LRS) - Modern learning is multimodal, they are not confined to one format or one toolset. LRS is a centralized concept to record all the learning activities taking place in the ecosystem. pc:harbinger-systems
4.2/ xAPI(Experience API) is a standard to record such learning activity, every activity generates a standard xAPI statement which includes data about the actor (e.g., learner), verb (e.g., watched, passed), and object (e.g., video, quiz) as well as contextual information.
All standard content creation tools such as H5P, Articulate or Adobe Captivate generates xAPI compliant events thereby disconnecting content creation from content delivery.
4.2/ xAPI compliant learning record store makes it possible to capture any learning event and build a learning profile for each of the learners. Learning Locker docs.learninglocker.net is an open-source implementation of xAPI based LRS, that records the statements and help query
4.3/SCORM: Standard focused on the content side of the house and did help organisations to bring content from anywhere and host it on LMS. With orgs. focusing on multimodal learning, xAPI became more relevant as it focuses on learning outcome measuring than t content delivery
4.4/LTI - Learning Tools Interoperability is a set of standards the industry is trying to adhere to for each of the components. Interoperable badges, certificates, assessments or question formats are some of the specifications one should look at...
...if you are working on any of these areas imsglobal.org/specifications…, These specifications can help you to broaden your understanding of the domain and help you model your information schemas better.
4.5/With more agencies, govt. and institutions like IEEE joining hands in building these standards, its bringing together lots of experience. I strongly recommend looking at them while building your learning systems so that can skip a few years of your product evolution cycle.
If you have followed this far and are keen on working on edtech that will make a difference - join us.

We at @leadschoolindia are building some of the cutting edge edtech solutions that will help millions of learners across the globe. DM 🙏.
