#WhoopiGoldberg ok. So this tweet is about dialogue...
The comment Whoopi made was myopic and uninformed at best, but its based on American not Hitler's Germany issues. To many Jews are a faith community, or assimilation into "whiteness," in America has made them "white" but...
Anti-Semitism really is about Jews as a distinct, racial group that bear in their genes dysfunction..it was coined by a racial anti-Semite. I use Anti-Jewish also to describe issues with the religious part of Jewish peoplehood, Judaism.
Jews were seen by the Nazis as a "mongrel" race because they ranged in phenotype and reflected origins as a mixed people. There were seen as imposters if similar in phenotype or invaders if not. You couldn't win.
Her commentary that the Shoah was white on white violence is less of an issue that separating the Holocaust from white supremacy and racial Anti-Semitism bc "race" is indeed woven into the whole history of European Anti-Semitism.
Its very similar to the way certain ethnic groups in the former Soviet Union are called "dark(y)" or various European ethnic minorities have their otherness amplified but at the same time....could come to America and be seen as "white."
Jewish peoplehood is complex and Nazism recognized that raiding synagogues wasn't how to go about their work. One Jewish grandparent was eerily similar to one Black great grandparent in determining otherness
This dance across other people's definitions of who you are and what you are is part of the frustration. But I need to offer a story.
The Karaites are a Jewish minority that does not practice many of the elements of Rabbinic Judaism that was born in the Middle Ages.
According to one story a community of Karaites were slated for liquidation and a rabbi stepped up and said "no they aren't Jews..." it wasn't a last minute sleight, he genuinely wanted to save them despite the obvious contentions between the two communities.
Being Jewish is really bigger than being a part of a house of worship. Its not like being part of the Christian ecclesia (church) or Muslim ummah (brotherhood/sisterhood). You are literally mishpochah...family. religious or not, observant or not, etc.
In Jewish peoplehood, yes there are people who are religious but not observant...there are Jews whose story doesn't begin in summer camp or Hebrew schools and Jews who are part of other communities but still have connection to and membership in Jewish peoplehood.
Being honest with myself I can see all of the intersections and carefully navigate those ideas and language because the fine print matters. Our precision reveals our openness to possibility and commitment to listening.
Its really important to acknowledge shifting understandings and know that one size rarely fits all.

I'm a #Black Gay Jew. #VotingRights are under attack, synagogues are being attacked, Nazis are here, #HBCUs being threatened, Black& #Jewish &Gay authors are seeing our books banned under false pretense.some schools will ban discussion of LGBTQ issues. We are hurting. Im hurting.
There's a difference between that sanctimonious bullshit about "victimhood," (imma tell you how to feel after making your life hell) and living under constant pressure from people who don't like you just for being who you can't help but be.
I am worried about everyone. Immigrants from Haiti and Latin America, disabled folks ignored in this COVID era, Muslim families split apart, women losing rights, equal pay and authority over their own bodies, trans ppl feeling unsafe. People are still hungry&homeless.

This is all you need to know:
This might be a short thread...so buckle up...
In my book The Cooking Gene. I had to deal with the legacy of cotton. I used to go picking cotton for long days. An Antebellum bale was about 400 pounds of picked cotton.
Hardscrabble poor white folks or as one author put it "Dixie's Forgotten People" didn't get the whip. Their mothers were not r*aped to humiliate them, their children&husbands. They were often deputized against Black folks&were used as a racial football to maintain planter power.
The largest forced migration of born Americans was the Domestic Slave Trade. It involved the rupture and movement of hundreds of thousands of Black men, women and children. From 1790 to 1861 a Black person could expect to be sold 2-3 times in their working life.

Oh yeah...
If you teach about us, the Jewish people in the context of the Shoah/Holocaust you have to admit:
1. White supremacy is evil and has affected the human race, the planet and the fulfillment of the American promise.
2. That America turned away Jews from sanctuary.
Cont.
3. That there is no hierarchy of religions. It is personal and private to decide to be a part of or not be a part of a religious community.
4. That Jewish peoplehood stands on its own terms not in relation to the story of Christianity.
5. That Jews had lives before our traumas.
6. That Hitler's Germany drew both on their colonial practices and racial science atrocities in Africa and Jim Crow in America along with millenia of European anti-Semitism.
7. That using nationalistic and scapegoating tropes and logical fallacies against groups is anti-American

Conservative white evangelicals are overrepresented in the voting demographics because they participate at higher rates&have easements to vote at higher rights given them by legislatures that know they will get what they want by making it all abt them.
Vote. Do not be apathetic.
17 percent of the population determines over a quarter of its election results.
And you must vote local, state and national.

#SupremeCourt the responses of the hypocrites on Fox News...aren't just disappointing&enraging, they are sad&if I may, cruel. If u are not Black, consider me one of your Black neighbors. This drivel hurts to hear.they are talking abt my Mother, Grandmother, sisters, cousins&aunts
My late Mom was the smartest person I think I ever met. She had so many dreams and ambitions but many were stolen by racism&deep sexism inside&outside her world. If people shit on Black women for having an overdue moment of representation they are not Americans to me.
No, we've had enough dehumanizing and knocking down of Black women. I am tired of people taking it lightly. The most valuable commodity in this country was once our mothers wombs &150 years after that value was canceled the likes of Janine Pirro (I don't care) ? competency

Its from 2003. Things weren't so great in the interpretation of American slavery. Exhibits&language u see now wasn't as common. Its so important to realize that our societal mood matters..like the moment we are in right now.
GO TO PLANTATIONS AND KEEP THEM HONEST
PUSH BACK AGAINST LITERATURE THAT INAPPROPRIATELY WHITEWASHES HISTORY.
