Next time an interviewer asks you to "Explain this gap on your resume," REGARDLESS of why, answer,
"I decline to answer that question in #solidarity with those whose reasons are none of your business, or reveal information that it's illegal to not-hire them for."
🧵
#HotTake It's MOST important that those with more #privilege who would claim to not be racist/classist/ableist/misogynist/otherwise hostile to all marginalized groups refuse.
When YOU give an actual answer, YOU steal 💰 from all of them.
THEY don't get work, or get paid less. 2/
Especially someone who's been to prison, there's no good way to spin that story, especially for white-collar jobs with good pay.
People make mistakes, or get punished unjustly - YOU condemn them to poverty for life. 3/
YOU punish women for taking time to raise children, or care for #disabled/elderly family. Even though the decision makers insist that such an answer doesn't count against people, they're considered less reliable; bosses worry it will happen again & they'll suddenly lose you... 4/
...right after they get them fully integrated & making the company 💰.
Similar for #disabled people who have a flare-up & can't work for a while, then want/need to come back. 5/
They're dem as someone who sacrifices The Job for family, or their own health, or any other reason; that means The Job is not The Most Important Thing In Life™ for them; Corporate America demands all applicants give lip service to that fiction. 6/
EVERYONE needs to refuse to answer until they stop asking.
@RepGarbarino, #ActuallyAutistic New Yorkers need you to #AbolishABA, which abuses autistic children, conditioning them to suffer in silence to accommodate the bigotry of allistic parents & authority figures.
The onus is on THEM to accommodate #neurodiversity!
"Allistic" is our preferred term for those who aren't punished by the majority for being different .
You may have heard the term "neurotypical"; that presupposes that you are the typical, better version, while we who are "neurodivergant" are implied inferior. 2/
If autistic people were the majority, the shoe could just as easily be on the other foot.
You've constructed the dominant social norms, laws, corporate policies, etc. based on assumptions that we don't quite fit so well; this mismatch causes our difference to be a disability. 3/
