Here we go... A thread about that Jimmy Carr joke.
Summary: No topic is off-limits for comedy, but that joke crossed the line, because even the reason he INTENDED it to be funny isn't actually OK. But I am worried it's being used to justify censorship in upcoming legislation.
2⃣
If you go to a Comedy show called "His Dark Materials", you can't complain the subject matter is too dark.
BUT good comics handle dark topics in neutral or even progressive ways. e.g. Using it to attack bigotry/ ridicule bigots.
Carr is usually a 'good comic'. But not here.
3⃣
Why did the Jimmy Carr joke cross the line?
He would never have said "Nobody mentions blacks being killed because nobody wants to talk about the positives." He chose "Gypsies". Because anti-black racism is too unpopular.
Romani people & Travellers don't have that protection.
4⃣
He wasn't supporting what happened to travellers (as some say). He was playing on anti-traveller sentiment in the UK.
Legitimising bad feeling against a group the government is CURRENTLY criminalising cos they don't have the same PR as BLM?..
Bad look. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
5⃣
Which is why I'm really uncomfortable with the fact that the same government who've been trying to put travellers in PRISON...
... are now acting like they're introducing online censorship laws to PROTECT travellers, because they're supposedly outraged about Jimmy Carr. 🤔
And personally...
When I watched it for the first time, I loved the show as a whole, but with that joke...
I predicted the punchline before he said it and my brain was like "😬😬 naaaaahh don't say it. It's too obvious and it's not funny" and then he said it. 😔

The reason I always say morality should be based more on logic than on emotion is:
A) People feel more empathy for people they identify with.
That's what lets people prioritise the needs of their race/class/sex/religion at the expense of others and still feel like a good person.
Tory MPs don't think they're bad people when they raise national insurance on people who can't heat their homes.
They just have more empathy with the bankers they grew up with.
So they find it easier to justify working people's suffering to themselves as 'protecting the economy'.
Racists don't think they're bad people.
They just don't feel as much empathy for people who don't look like them as they do for people they identify with.
So when they hear anything that sounds like it may balance things for minorities, all they feel is an attack on white people.
He definitely will have made jokes & comments about women that revealed who he was and decent men in his life shrugged them off.
REMEMBER THAT next time someone accuses those calling out sexist attitudes & language of being 'too woke'.
If a majority of MPs in another country voted to:
▪️Outlaw shouting at protest
▪️Change the law for an MP found guilty of bribery
▪️Remove the vote from 2 million people
We'd call it a corrupt dictatorship.
But Great Britain is unconditionally better than those countries, right?
Please don't let Dominic Raab or any Tory MP brag about the Policing Bill as if it's a good thing, without telling people it's part of the UK's descent into fascism. #SundayMorning
The Parliament Human Rights Committee and the UN have condemned this bill's human rights violations.
So, @sophieraworth, think about how you'll feel watching police violently suppress peaceful protesters, knowing you let Dominic Raab promote it UNCHALLENGED. #SundayMorning#Marr
I hope you just didn't know this, @sophieraworth, so I'm appealing to your conscience.
The Parliament is the body that will pass this law and it already concluded it's a human rights violation.
