This is poised to be a troubling week in the trans justice context with really dangerous bills moving across the country. Here is what is happening and what you can do.
In Arizona, we have SB1165 now in the House (having passed the Senate) - that would ban trans girls from sports.

SB1138 - which would ban health care for trans minors is set for a hearing in Senate Judiciary on Wednesday 2/9.

Arizona is leading the country in attacks on trans youth. Also let @dougducey know that he should VETO any anti-trans bill that gets to his desk, particularly any catastrophic health care ban.
South Dakota has already passed and signed an anti-trans bill into law. They are moving a bathroom ban now. HB1005 would ban trans students from restrooms. It has passed the House and moves to the Senate this week. aclusd.org/en/we-oppose-a…
Alabama is moving a felony ban on health care for trans minors. These bills are SB184 and HB266. SB184 is set for hearing on Wednesday. Follow @ACLUAlabama for updates on that hearing.

We have reached a very painful and depressing escalation in the legislative/non-legislative policy attacks on trans young people. What is perhaps most disheartening is the lack of national attention and outrage from our supposed allies to meet the fixation from our opponents.
South Dakota has passed an anti-trans sports bill (SB46) that will be signed by Gov. Noem today. SD also passed an anti-trans bathroom bill through the House (HB 1005) that now moves on to the Senate.
Arizona and Indiana have both passed anti-trans sports bill through one chamber. AZ's SB1165 through the Senate and Indiana's HB1041 through the House. Both will be on the move next week.

It is January which means states will be starting legislative sessions soon and we will again see gratuitous attacks on trans people, particularly trans youth. I will pin this thread to add bills and action items as sessions progress.
Remember to begin contacting your state senators and representatives to tell them to oppose any anti-trans bills. There will also likely be anti-abortion, anti-"Critical Race Theory", and voter suppression measures. Be sure to follow proposed laws in your state and TAKE ACTION.
Arizona has prefiled a bill to ban health care for trans minors (like the bill that passed in Arkansas last year) with additional provisions to require disclosure by school staff to a parent or guardian of any child exploring their gender - SB1045: azleg.gov/legtext/55leg/…

I hate engaging in these conversations about people with large platforms who make trans people's lives miserable & more precarious. In all my despair & anger over the current landscape of course I do not want anyone else to be in danger. But let's talk about precarity....
Trans people are facing so many systematic and interpersonal assaults on their existence. From violence at home, in the street, in employment, shelter, health care. The rates of unemployment, homelessness, poverty set off a cycle leading to criminalization & premature death.
Hating us and devoting your life to exacerbating those conditions is a choice. Being trans is not. Or if it is, I choose it every day because the alternative is unimaginable.

So what happened today in the UK with trans legal rights and why does it matter? Some quick thoughts!
As part of a well-funded global movement attacking trans people, our bodies, our rights, and our healthcare, a challenge was filed to try to stop the National Health Service’s ability to provide gender-affirming care for trans minors.
Last year, a High Court decision in the UK effectively put a halt to care for trans minors across England and Wales. The decision claimed that gender-affirming care warranted unique intervention by the courts.

Flying down to Arkansas for court on Wednesday in @ACLU's challenge to the state's prohibition on gender-affirming care for trans minors. Here are some things that the state and its experts argue in defense of the law (with fact checks):
That most trans kids ultimately "desist" and end up cis.
FACT CHECK: Nope. They are distorting data about pre-pubertal kids (and that data is also flawed). But once reaching puberty, almost no trans-identified minors ultimately come to identify as cis.
That gender-affirmation makes kids trans.

FACT CHECK: Nope. You can't make someone trans and you definitely can't make them cis by denying affirmation.

For everyone who is outraged about what happened to trans people in Arkansas, there is still time to help us stop these cruel and senseless bills elsewhere. I am going to provide an action plan below. #ProtectTransKids #LetKidsPlay
Tomorrow, West Virginia will be voting on HB 3293, a bill barring trans people from sports. If it passes the Senate tomorrow then we will need a veto from @JimJusticeWV. Call lawmakers in WV now.
Yesterday Florida advanced another anti-trans sports bill. We need to contact lawmakers in the Florida Senate to make sure they do not advance SB2012/HB1475. These bills are so cruel and dangerous.
