I don't understand the thought process behind thinking that COVID restrictions are some sort of arbitrary control by the government that can be removed by yelling a lot, and then everything will be fine. #cdnpoli 1/10
COVID is a disease. It is spread via aerosol droplets which are breathed out by someone infected and breathed in by others. It is not political. It doesn't care how tired you are of restrictions. 2/10
When COVID started in Canada, back in March 2020, most people were concerned and actually were frustrated by the lack of response by many governments. A lack of response which made the spread and casualties worse than they would have been otherwise. 3/10
Indeed, every time the restrictions are loosened, COVID surges. We know this. We have seen it over and over. The numbers go down and we start to get a handle on the spread, and the government reduces restrictions and cases go way up. 4/10
Now, two years along, people are experiencing fatigue. It's a thing. People are tired of being nervous. They are tired of masks, and having attendance in public spaces limited and certain activities curtailed. 5/10
But, you see, COVID doesn't care. The virus does not care how fatigued you are. The restrictions are not, and never were, some kind of arbitrary control by government. They are there to keep people safe. 6/10
You might as well say seat belts, water testing, food inspections, hard hats in construction zones, and all the other rules to keep people safe and healthy are just arbitrary government control strategies. 7/10
Indeed, that is what the conservatives say. They are all about "red tape reduction", which is basically cutting the rules that keep you and me safe so businesses can make more money. Last time the CPC was in power they cut "red tape". 8/10
We got lysteriosis, Walkerton, and Lac Megantic. See? Rules are there for REASONS. If there is a threat to public health, we can't just cut rules all willy-nilly because we're tired of the rules. 9/10
And we certainly shouldn't cut them on the basis of a bunch of people getting all whiny because wearing a mask is uncomfortable, or they are convinced they know better that the vast majority of doctors and scientists who have studied infection disease for years. 10/10

What does one do if one lives in a country where about 3/4 of the people are reasonable, who care about others, want to have their taxes work towards the public good, want universal health care and excellent public education, but the official opposition wants none of that? 1/20
What if one lives in a country where the official opposition spends all their time and energy trying to unseat the government? Who actually makes things up to try to turn the public against the government they elected? 2/

Who may even have had more than a passing involvement in an coup attempt? CPC MPs, along with provincial conservative MLAs, were seen to be sympathetic to the convoy, some even meeting with them, buying them coffee and donuts, etc. 3/ Image

This is an example of normalizing the people in the convoy. There is tokenism (% of POC in photos doesn't seem represented in live video), there is rationalization of grievances, and there is hyperbole (people are being oppressed? Really?). 1/8
The photography has been played with, loads of contrast and over-sharpening to create visual impact. It's not that these people are extraordinary or are emanating some sort of truth. It's that there is a skilled photographer and digital editor behind the pictures. 2/8
But those of a certain view love it. They are claiming this is great journalism. It isn't. "Accountant quits his job because he has to wear a mask at work because he won't get vaccinated". Sounds like his firm accommodated him, not like he was repressed. 3/8

Please, please understand this. Fascism is EVIL. It cannot be normalized, under any circumstances. The people on the streets of Ottawa today waving swastikas and confederate flags are not "misunderstood" or "basically good people". 1/12
Let me show you something different. Here is a group of Antifa. Anti-fascists. My Dad is the guy in the middle. Those guys around him are his crew. They were part of an RAF/RCAF bomber squadron. 2/12
Some of these guys didn't come back. My Dad did, but he was changed by his experiences. They went and fought because they saw the evil that fascism is. Millions died because of Nazis. Nazis KILLED MILLIONS of good people, ordinary people, people like you and me. 3/12

This is what the group the CPC, UCP, and PPC endorsed did today. What I want to say to them would probably get be barred from Twitter for life. Deplorables. All of them.
Michael Cooper, CPC MP, in front of a Canadian flag with swastikas on it.
People waving a Nazi flag in Ottawa. This is not a game. This is not shits and giggles. You would be arrested in Germany for displaying this. WTAF is wrong with conservatives that they think this is anywhere near OK?

To recap:
Truckers who are upset that they can't be anti-vax and cross back and forth between the US and Canada set up a "convoy" of trucks to go to Ottawa, a la the Yellow Vest convoy of 2019.
1/12
A go-fund-me was set up, ostensibly to help cover the truckers' expenses. The organizer, Tamara Lich, has known associations with various far-right extremist groups and sits on the board of the Maverick Party, a western separatist party based in Alberta. 2/12
The goal of the go-fund-me has been raised again and again, from $1M to $2M and up. It currently sits at $5M. The fund is around $4.5 M right now. Complaints to Go-Fund-Me have led to them freezing the account (preventing withdrawals, you can still donate) 3/12

Here is a post from Chicken Little. "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" he cries. Or, maybe it's from the boy who cried wolf. In any case, it's a message from a big lying liar who lies. 1/7
Now, we need to wonder why the conservatives (it's not just Jason Kenney) are lying to Canadians so stridently. And so obviously. If you walk into grocery stores, you see goods for sale. It is an easily disproven lie. What are they playing at? 2/7
Why would they want mass hysteria, panic-buying, and food hoarding? It can't be for the public good (which is supposed to be their job), so what are they getting out of it? They want power. They want the duly elected government unseated and replaced with one of their own. 3/7
