What does one do if one lives in a country where about 3/4 of the people are reasonable, who care about others, want to have their taxes work towards the public good, want universal health care and excellent public education, but the official opposition wants none of that? 1/20
What if one lives in a country where the official opposition spends all their time and energy trying to unseat the government? Who actually makes things up to try to turn the public against the government they elected? 2/
thestar.com/politics/feder…
Who may even have had more than a passing involvement in an coup attempt? CPC MPs, along with provincial conservative MLAs, were seen to be sympathetic to the convoy, some even meeting with them, buying them coffee and donuts, etc. 3/
But what if their involvement goes deeper? What if they didn't just latch onto this "movement" in an opportunistic fashion? What if they, or their agents and allies, were in on the ground floor? 4/
What do we know with a fair degree of certainty?
1) This "movement" had a trial run in 2019 with the United We Roll convoy. The CPC actively supported them, appearing with them, even one conservative senator encouraging them to roll over Liberals. 5/
huffpost.com/archive/ca/ent…
2) Like the 2019 convoy, this "Freedom" convoy had little to do with the stated cause. 2019 was supposed to be protesting carbon taxes, but boiled down to hatred for the UN, immigrants, and Liberals. 6/
2022 started out as opposition to the federal mandate about truckers crossing the border needing to be vaccinated or quarantine. The same rules were in place on the US side, so even if our government lifted the mandate, those truckers (the unvaccinated 10% or so)... 7/
Would not find their situation especially improved. This convoy turned out to be about an MOU about overthrowing the government. Not COVID restrictions. 8/
hilltimes.com/2022/02/02/the…
3) Funding for this convoy came from many places, many of the largest donors were outside Canada. This smacks of a foreign bid to seize control of our country. 9/
For all the Canadian flag-waving and anthem-singing, the "patriots" in the convoy seem to have been dupes for a hostile foreign take-over. 10/
4) The CPC and many of the provincial conservative parties have ties with the IDU. The CPC is listed among their members. The Sask Party and the UCP both pay Stephen Harper, Chair of the IDU, as an advisor. 11/
calgaryherald.com/business/varco…
The Republicans in the US are also IDU partners. Right now there are investigations in the US about how much Republicans, including their former president, had to do with instigating a traitorous attack on their federal legislature on Jan 6, 2021. 12/ nationalobserver.com/2022/01/27/opi…
5) Propaganda leading up to and during the convoy has been traced to foreign call hubs and logistics centres. The radicalization of many of the participants likely came through the echo chamber of far-right content providers, many of which are not based in Canada.13/
Thus far, it appears that there has been a long-game, concerted effort to overthrow Canada's duly elected government, and that it originated outside our country. 14/
This effort seems to closely align with the CPC's activities and goals since 2015 when they lost power. They have tried everything to get Canadians to reject the LPC. Including trying to create scandals about swing-sets and "secret palaces". 15/
Because, not only do these "conservatives" not care about Canadians or democracy or the public good, they also think Canadians are idiots. (BTW, the construction below is renovations to Harrington Lake approved while Harper was PM) 16/
I think we need a thorough investigation of the CPC, UCP, Sask Party & other conservative organizations' ties to the convoy. I think we need to root out the connections between Canadian conservatives and the foreign entities that recruited and radicalized the convoy people. 17/
I think, if it should be found that conservative politicians across Canada have aided and abetted, or even helped to organize a seditious movement and an attempted coup, there should be charges laid and a full prosecution. 18/
We cannot afford to have a recognized political party working against the best interests of Canadians, working against democracy in this country. We deserve to know, what, if any, role the CPC etc played in raising this convoy & blockading our cities and borders.19/
Our checks and balances on our elected officials rely to a great extent on them acting honourably. It seems we need to take legislative measures to prevent any entity unwilling to act honourably and for the good of Canadians, from assuming power in this country. 20/20

Oh my! There is a lot to unpack here.

Jason Kenney, premier of Alberta, is crowing that he got together with a bunch of US Republican governors and wrote a letter. 1/20 #cdnpoli
"Today, I've signed a letter along with Premier Scott Moe, Governor Gianforte, and 15 OTHER American governors..." Are you confused about your national identity, Jason? Do you want so badly to be American that you are pretending that you are? 2/20
You wrote this letter, then announced it on Twitter, and you are accusing the federal government of political theatre? You have no concept of irony, do you?

I don't understand the thought process behind thinking that COVID restrictions are some sort of arbitrary control by the government that can be removed by yelling a lot, and then everything will be fine. #cdnpoli 1/10
COVID is a disease. It is spread via aerosol droplets which are breathed out by someone infected and breathed in by others. It is not political. It doesn't care how tired you are of restrictions. 2/10
When COVID started in Canada, back in March 2020, most people were concerned and actually were frustrated by the lack of response by many governments. A lack of response which made the spread and casualties worse than they would have been otherwise. 3/10

This is an example of normalizing the people in the convoy. There is tokenism (% of POC in photos doesn't seem represented in live video), there is rationalization of grievances, and there is hyperbole (people are being oppressed? Really?). 1/8
The photography has been played with, loads of contrast and over-sharpening to create visual impact. It's not that these people are extraordinary or are emanating some sort of truth. It's that there is a skilled photographer and digital editor behind the pictures. 2/8
But those of a certain view love it. They are claiming this is great journalism. It isn't. "Accountant quits his job because he has to wear a mask at work because he won't get vaccinated". Sounds like his firm accommodated him, not like he was repressed. 3/8

Please, please understand this. Fascism is EVIL. It cannot be normalized, under any circumstances. The people on the streets of Ottawa today waving swastikas and confederate flags are not "misunderstood" or "basically good people". 1/12
Let me show you something different. Here is a group of Antifa. Anti-fascists. My Dad is the guy in the middle. Those guys around him are his crew. They were part of an RAF/RCAF bomber squadron. 2/12
Some of these guys didn't come back. My Dad did, but he was changed by his experiences. They went and fought because they saw the evil that fascism is. Millions died because of Nazis. Nazis KILLED MILLIONS of good people, ordinary people, people like you and me. 3/12

This is what the group the CPC, UCP, and PPC endorsed did today. What I want to say to them would probably get be barred from Twitter for life. Deplorables. All of them.
Michael Cooper, CPC MP, in front of a Canadian flag with swastikas on it.
People waving a Nazi flag in Ottawa. This is not a game. This is not shits and giggles. You would be arrested in Germany for displaying this. WTAF is wrong with conservatives that they think this is anywhere near OK?

To recap:
Truckers who are upset that they can't be anti-vax and cross back and forth between the US and Canada set up a "convoy" of trucks to go to Ottawa, a la the Yellow Vest convoy of 2019.
1/12
A go-fund-me was set up, ostensibly to help cover the truckers' expenses. The organizer, Tamara Lich, has known associations with various far-right extremist groups and sits on the board of the Maverick Party, a western separatist party based in Alberta. 2/12
The goal of the go-fund-me has been raised again and again, from $1M to $2M and up. It currently sits at $5M. The fund is around $4.5 M right now. Complaints to Go-Fund-Me have led to them freezing the account (preventing withdrawals, you can still donate) 3/12
