A thread about Nigeria’s Conditional Cash Transfer program @HUPcct - one of the programs under the National Social Investment Programme; and whether N5,000 a month (current monthly payment, to 1.6 million Nigerian households) can make a difference in people’s lives or not.
HM @Sadiya_farouq was asked about the N5,000 at #StateHouseBriefing yesterday. A journalist, asking a question, spoke dismissively about the amount - that N5,000 cannot do anything.
Minister’s reply:

“Saying 5,000 cannot make a difference in ppl’s lives is an elitist statement. We know, ‘cos we’ve gone to the field. We’ve seen ppl, when you pay them this @HUPcct 5k, they cry ‘cos they’ve never seen 5k before. It goes a long way, changes their status.”
Let me now quickly cut to HE @PeterObi, and hear what he has to say about a sum of money that too many of you are quick to (out of sad ignorance about the realities of Nigeria) dismiss as ‘nothing’.

Listen to HE Obi:
Remember that the @HUPcct is meant for the “Poorest of the poorest” Nigerians. These are not people on Twitter or Facebook. Most of them are rural poor. If you hear the stories of the things they’re able to do with these N5k monthly payments, you’d be SURPRISED!
Let’s go to the village of Bardo, in Jigawa State, where 420 women beneficiaries of @HUPcct saved N2,000 each from their stipends to buy a vehicle.

The point here is to show what’s possible with these sums you city people dismiss as inconsequential. @abati1990 @ARISEtv
Second part of the Jigawa video (Barde community), showing the immense power of N1,000 and and N2,000, when it’s saved and multiplied. @HUPcct @FMHDSD @Sadiya_farouq @ARISEtv @abati1990
From Jigawa let’s go to Kwara State, and see what people (again, women), did with their 5k month stipends.

[Keep in mind that 98 percent of all @HUPcct beneficiaries are women, on behalf of their families and households]. @abati1990 @ARISEtv
“In Imo State, we have women, who have contributed out of this N5,000 to open leather bag [manufacturing] factory, that supplies the leather products around the community and its environment.” punchng.com/98-of-cash-tra…
Governor of Kwara State, @RealAARahman, on @HUPcct.

This is what N5k can do in poor communities across Nigeria.

Stop looking down on what you think is small money. Ignorance of Nigerian realities is not an excuse.
A few years ago @HUPcct found that beneficiaries around the country had saved a total of more than HALF A BILLION NAIRA through various cooperative and savings efforts.

From collecting N5k a month o. It’s a big F deal for the poorest Nigerians.
Even on Twitter, 5k is not inconsequential. Ordinary 1k giveaway by your favorite Influencers, you’ll see people enthusiastically dropping account details.

But some of those same people will come online to say @HUPcct is useless.

Go through the thread above for evidence!
I’ll close this thread with the words of the Minister of @FMHDSD, @Sadiya_farouq, on @HUPcct

Listen to it in full, it’s a short video.

Too many people sadly have a very limited understanding of the realities of Nigeria, but don’t even realize it

I’ll drop the mic on this note.

Made a vow to mostly mind my Biz this year. But when I see a horribly wrong, IGNORANT, stupid tweet like this, I can’t help diving in 😀

1. China doesn’t give you money to do as you please with.

2. Kano-Maradi Rail is NOT a Chinese project! mota-engil.com/wp-content/upl…

#thread
“China gave you loan to build railways and you decided to build one to the deserts of Niger.”

Clearly ignorant as to how these loans work. He thinks China just hands over cash and @NigeriaGov decides to do whatever they wish with the cash.

LMAO. This is really daft, sorry
All loans from China are tied to specific projects - so far the portfolio includes Rail, Airport and ICT projects. The details are public, on @DMONigeria website.

So the idea that Nigeria can decide what to use a loan for, post-approval, suggests this person KNOWS NOTHING

When you realize the extent to which Int’l Media sometimes get Nigeria wrong, you start to question your acceptance of their default reporting about other parts of the world you’re not familiar with.

If they can get this wrong, what else are they getting wrong?
[That’s of course not to say local media isn’t just as guilty of getting Nigeria wrong. Examples abound. But the earlier point was meant to focus on Int’l media. Local media = another chapter entirely].
One of biggest successes of traditional ‘Western’ media has been the ability to elevate a very specific, limited, often-flawed POV (hereinafter known as “Bias”) to the realms of Objective Standard, regarding reporting about ANY part of the world. An admirable achievement,no doubt.
