Using the extraordinary powers in Canada's Emergencies Act are supposed to expire after 30 days, unless re-approved by Parliament for a specific time period. A mere 5 days in, @cafreeland says the Trudeau gov't will make some of the powers it grants the state permanent. #cdnpoli

Freeland:
"We used all of the tools that we had, prior to invocation of the Emergencies Act and we determined that we needed some additional tools."

"Now some of those tools, we will be putting forward measurers to put those tools permanently in place. The authorities of FINTRAC, I believe, do need to be expanded to cover crowd-sourcing platforms and their payment providers."

"So that is something that we need to do and we will do and that needs to be in place permanently."

Barry MacKillop of the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada said while crowdfunding sites used to support the trucker protests aren’t covered under the agency’s mandate, when money flows through entities that are, questionable transactions would be flagged

“I can’t speak to specific reporting or reporting on any individuals or organizations but we have not seen a spike in suspicious transaction reporting, for example, related to this,” he said.
