whats a german chancellor gonna do say nooooooooooo you cant anschluss
ongoing thread of translation ht @nomadcharlie

cant vouch for anything but if correct translation uh buckle up

yeah ok so

1. donbass breakaway regions recognized

2. alliances being drawn up

easy to go to broader war just by continuing shelling of ukraine territory from breakaways right

ukraine either takes it indefinitely or fires back, triggers invasion
hows Europe coping with this
speculation
archive.fo/jhcGt
maybe goes without saying but everything in this thread should be tagged as "claims," "rumors," "hmmm"

things seem to be moving very quickly expect some to much of this is going to be simply wrong
also black humor aside for a moment im very sorry for the russian and ukrainian people who are getting dragged into this. praying for your people and your families.
ht 🔒 who mentioned katyn in his qt

thats a bleak idea
in case your not familiar with katyn

probably gonna get mentioned from time to time for the next week or two

reportedly still denied by russian gov ("but if it happened it was good actually")
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_mas…
french left commentary

neither anywhere close to power

royal was a failed socialist presidential candidate, roussel i think a current communist candidate

weird, no idea what to make of this

ht @phl43
my completely off the cuff guess is "flailing while western and central EU governments abandon support for sanctions"
re US consistency

i think this looks really bad for us tbqh
makes me wonder how hard biden is even gonna be willing to go on sanctions in the end
will note anything interesting

- our ambassador to the UN says "nucular" we're not sending our best

- she notes that russian claims as stated include poland, finland, baltics, etc etc

- framing our objections as preserving the UN which is pretty rich for the USU tbqh
albania condemns russia

heh
french rep condemns russia, attacks them for going back on minsk agreements specifically

his tie knot is loose. im disappointed i expect better of the french

france is "concerned," welcomes ukraine's "constraint" and expresses solidarity, denounces RU "peacekeeping"
more interesting now. india. "matter of deep concern." call for restraint "on all sides", legitimate security of "all countries" is important

"can only be resolved through diplomatic dialogue"

re-endorses minsk

classic unaligned india ig
brazil "following latest developments with great concern"

reiterates calls for immediate deescalation

emphasizes territorial integrity but then emphasizes "legitimate concerns" as being necessary

requests "military disengagement"

think this is just the neutral position rn
uk rep. "so-called DPR and LPR"

"so-called peacekeepers"

"consequences" of today:
- humanitarian impact awful
- territorial integrity of UN state violated
- international law "[mocked]"

uk announcing new sanctions on russia

"[everyone here should condemn russia]"
every time a country that invaded iraq talks about international norms i just cringe
mexico up

- principles of UN charter being violated
- donbas shellings unacceptable, urges "parties" to end these actions
- "[russia just said in this room they werent gonna invade, hope they hold to that]"
ireland (wonderful brogue luv)

- wed hoped to avoid this
- IE committed to UA territorial integrity. "unwavering"
- 2d time in 10y RU has flagrantly violated territory
- commends UA for restraint
- call again for diplomacy, deescalation
- retvrn to normandy talks
UAE. who is she? she seems not arab? native english speaker? curious

- chart a diplomatic path
- importance of dialogue
- watch out for civilians, infrastructure

glhf ig
kenya

missed most of this i was changing a diaper. too bad it sounded Fun

ends by condemning LPR, DPR and then condemns everyone else whos acted unilaterally

recognizes existing UA borders
ghana "deeply regrets" russia abandoning minsk

similar vibe to kenya

supports UA borders and does not support any actions that violate them, does not recognize LPR/DPR

demands restraint from "all parties"

takes this opportunity to condemn UNSC vetoes as anachronistic lol
gabon

territorial integrity, internal sovereignty, calls on "all parties" to show restraint and deescalate
norway

INTENSE glasses

condemns LPR/DPR recognition by putin, drags him for abandoning minsk

international law etc etc

urges russia to change its ways and withdraw forces from both within and near UA

commend UA's posture, "unwavering" support for UA's integrity
china ok this will be more interesting

"**all parties** must exercise restraint" emphasis translator's

current situation result of "complex factors", china makes decisions on basis of specific merits of any case

incredibly brief statement. quite cagey
and russia

other statements "highly emotional"

won't answer "direct verbal assaults", focus on "how to avoid war" and "stop UA from shelling LPR/DPR"

ukraine not letting people in LPR/DPR remember war era efforts "against fascists"

UA is a "maidan regime", destroyed minsk
also "russia is not a party to minsk" and also ukraine is sabotaging them

"also minsk is not dead and kiev has to implement them" what

"we do not intend a bloodbath in donbas"

"western allies are egging ukraine on"

"its russia where refugees are flooding" oh ffs
"western colleagues no one but you can stop the militaristic plans of kiev which could have dangerous consequences"

"none of you colleagues found a place in your statement for the residents of donbas"

i keep trying to get a screencap of the ukraine rep reacting but no dice
ukraine rep

he started twitchy

"im taking my mask off with unease. not because of coronavirus but because of the virus spread by the kremlin"
"recognition of LPR/DPR illegitimate, illegal"

running through a historical list of post-soviet land grabs, framing as a threat to the UN's legitimacy

"we're finding out who our friends are vs who just speaks"

"we choose diplomacy but we have a right to self-defense"
"invite russian rep to read and reread finding this is a violation of UN charter, principles, etc"

calls on russia to abandon its attacks on territorial integrity, cancel recognition decision, return to table for negotiation

demanding lots of stuff that wont happen
"the UN is sick, infected by the virus of the kremlin. will it succumb? its up to you"

holding up 2008 statement from RU on Georgia with highlighted portions using identical language to that in todays UN statement
"as council president i am obliged to thank you for your statement"
germany

condemns russia in strongest possible terms, mentions "serious consequences"

recent actions pretext for russian aggression

demands russia remove troops and reengage

will stand by ukraines territorial integrity

stronger statement than id expected tbh
meeting adjourned

no one is talking to russia

ukraine going around fist-bumping everyone
does any of this matter? i have no idea but it is interesting watching all of these countries putting public statements out
i think the potential value is getting people on the public record but also yes it seems unlikely that anything is likely to be actually enacted by the security council for obvious reasons
wonder if they could get away with it

it does seem like equilibrium in a world with uncertain alliances is "everyone who can, lowkey gets nukes"
anyway this thread is way too long, thanks for coming, im gonna get some groceries and submit some PRs

sick of putins shit

we ALL KNOW the "rus people" were the result of relentless conquest by norsemen of supine slavs. their entire "culture" is downstream of the longship and the seax

if anything we should insist on the return of muscovy and kyiv to the dominion of Great Uppsala
russia has NEVER BEEN an independent state! first they paid tribute to the Norsemen; then they knelt before debauched Byzantium and adopted the superficialities of their Pantokrator with none of his glory or might

FAKE CULTURE
after THAT they were trounced repeatedly by Mongols for centuries, paying tribute

muscovy rose to prominence as the servile tax collectors of the golden khans and we should never let the descendants of the conspiracy of silence forget their debased ancestry

thought on ukraine after spending some time driving around in silence

maybe you could frame victory conditions in the following way

1. if the war goes quickly and cleanly RU wins

2. if it's a slog RU loses; maybe UA "wins"

this is conventional wisdom. but, a third issue:
3. if the govt of RU or a major western power collapses it's victory for the other side nearly independent of how the war in UA is going

this feels under-considered to me

maybe it's not for RU, people are whispering about internal RU military dissent and public opinion. but,
it's not obvious to me that the Western powers come out unscathed, especially if there are widespread energy issues resulting from sanctions on Russia

no core Western country has had a revolution during covid, yet, but this isnt obviously sustainable imo

LMAO holy shit ok so they can just have parliament suspend any part of the constitution they like for five years

from 🔒, i am not able to evaluate but makes sense afaict
its interesting watching this play out entirely on film and in the public eye

david brin talked alot about low costs of panopticon and the asymptote of symmetrical omniscience but didnt discuss what it would look like in war

huh

any canadians willing to comment on this?
what happened to canada

this is madness

how did this happen to one of the biggest countries in the world and no one even noticed
america needs to purge the anglosphere of impurity and enshrine the bill of rights everywhere in absolute terms

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
this creeped me out when i read it in fourth grade

i specifically remember having an Oh Shit reaction to the thought of not being able to buy things. like, how were you going to eat?

pretty bleak! but its actually rather worse
apart from starving there is the issue of other laws existing that say youve GOTTA pay money for stuff

say, federal taxes, or property taxes

and if you dont do that you get in MORE shit with the government
