The escalation of the confrontation in Ukraine is a continuation of the policies of US imperialism, with NATO in tow, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The ICFI predicted the present crisis in a statement posted in the WSWS in 2016: 1/
wsws.org/en/articles/20…
These are several key passages from this statement:
"The invasions and interventions organized by US imperialism have devastated Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria. NATO is engaged in a massive rearmament program in preparation for war with Russia." 2/
"The world stands on the brink of a catastrophic global conflict. The statements of heads of capitalist governments grow increasingly bellicose. The proxy wars in Ukraine and Syria have drawn NATO and Russia closer to a full-scale confrontation." 3/
"[P]olitical leaders and military planners are approaching the conclusion that a war between major powers is not a remote possibility, but, rather, highly probable and, perhaps, even inevitable." 4/
" The drive to war is centered in the efforts of the United States to maintain its position as the global hegemonic power. The dissolution in 1991 of the Soviet Union was seen as an opportunity to assert unrivaled US domination throughout the world." 5/
"The Soviet Union had encompassed a vast expanse of the globe ... Thus, the vast regions of Eurasia, occupied by a debilitated Russia and newly independent Central Asian states, were again “in play,” open for corporate exploitation and plunder." /6
"A systematic buildup of American & allied military power is underway in the Indo-Pacific against China, while Russia has been confronted with NATO deployments in E. Europe and US pledges of military support to the ultra-nationalist regimes in the Baltic states and Ukraine." 7/
"Seventy years after the fall of Hitler’s Third Reich, the German ruling class is once again demanding that its state assert itself as the unquestioned overlord of Europe and as a world power." 8/
"British imperialism...sees in the US decline an opportunity to expand the still significant global operations of the banks and finance houses based in the City of London. France is striving to regain its grip over its former colonial dominions in North and West Africa. 9/
"Imperialism strives to overcome the clash of economic and geostrategic interests inherent in the capitalist nation-state system through the victory of one world hegemonic power over all its rivals." 10/
"Imperialism seeks to save the capitalist order through war. The working class seeks to resolve the global crisis through social revolution. The strategy of the revolutionary party develops as the negation of imperialist nation-state geopolitics." 11/
"The Russian gov't is the representative of the oligarchs who emerged from the Stalinist bureaucracy after it dismantled the Soviet state and abolished nationalized property relations. Its promotion of “Great Russian” nationalism is the extreme outcome of Stalinism itself." 12/
"World economy and world politics have entered a new stage. The period of capitalist triumphalism that opened up with the restoration of capitalism in Eastern Europe and reached fever pitch with the Stalinist dissolution of the USSR is over." 13/
"The new anti-war movement must be anti-capitalist and socialist, since there can be no serious struggle against war except in the fight to end the dictatorship of finance capital and put an end to the economic system that is the fundamental cause of militarism and war." 14/14

Dr. Dewald, you write in your bio: "Health is inextricably linked with politics." That being the case, is there not a a link between the profit-driven response to Covid responsible for one million deaths in the US and a foreign policy marked by endless aggressive wars? 1/
In the 30 years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the US - under both Republican and Democratic administrations - has bombed or invaded Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Syria,Afghanistan and Serbia. It endorsed the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. 2/
The total number of deaths caused by these wars are well over one million. "Abu Ghraib", "water-boarding", "Fallujah", "extraordinary rendition", "Guantanamo", "enhanced interrogation", and "targeted assassinations" are words that have entered into the vocabulary of depravity. 3/

Secretary of State Blinken proclaimed the inviolability of principles that the United States has repeatedly violated. 1/
1) "One country cannot change the border of another by force." What about the US/NATO destruction of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, which included the 78-day bombing of Serbia for compel it to accept the secession of Kosovo province? 1/
2) "One cannot dictate the choices or policies or with whom it will associate." What about the involvement of the United States in innumerable coup d'etats in Latin America and the Caribbean. 2/

A question for Mr. McFaul: When has he or any segment of the network media (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX) acknowledged the well-documented role of Ukrainian fascists not only in the 2014 coup but also in the present-day Ukraine army and paramilitary? 1/
Yesterday NBC ran a report by Richard Engel glorifying the preparation of Ukrainian civilians for combat. He failed to inform viewers that the military trainers were members of the neo-Nazi Azov Regiment, wearing their SS-insignia. 2/ Image
No mention is made of the historical fact that 30 million Soviet soldiers and civilians (consisting of Russians, Ukrainians and other nationalities) perished fighting the Nazis between 1941-45. The Ukrainian fascists were allied with the Nazis. 3/ wsws.org/en/articles/20…

In his support for #1619Project historical falsification and #MeToo witchhunting, Jeet Heer remains true to the traditions of the publication for which he writes, The Nation. 1/
This rotting flagship of American liberal reformism is ineradicably marked by its endorsement in the 1930s of the Moscow Trials and the Stalinist terror, which resulted in the extermination of the entire generation of Russian Marxists who had led the 1917 October Revolution. 2/
Trotsky described the editors and writers of The Nation as the "priests of half-truths," that is, as the most cynical of liars. Trotsky related their alliance with the Stalinist bureaucracy to the political and intellectual bankruptcy of American reformists. He wrote: 3/

Glad that you (and many other scientists) are now reading the WSWS. But you wouldn't be surprised by its content - "among the most truthful and reliable" - if you had been familiar with the writings of Trotsky, who ranks among the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. 1/
Murdered by a Stalinist agent in 1940, Trotsky personified - as did Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg - the great socialist culture of the early 20th century that educated the working class, thus enabling it to act as a historically aware and politically conscious revolutionary force. 2/
The disastrous response to the pandemic and its tragic consequences cannot be explained apart from the absence of a mass socialist movement based on the working class, which would declare war on #Covid19 and the criminal corporate/finance-dictated policy of #herdimmunity. 3/

Your reply is as nonsensical as it is dishonest. If you were opposed to war, you would have written a column calling on Germany to reject US threats against Russia and the expansion of NATO into Ukraine. 1/
Instead, your column cynically mocks the persistent and deep-rooted anti-war sentiments among the German people, and refers to opposition to the use of German weapons against Russians as a "catechism." 2/
You reject references to the horrors of World War II - in which Germany killed tens of millions of people - "as not particularly useful in the 21st century." You should be ashamed of yourself for writing such words. 3/
