Here is a prime example of how the baby-above-all-else narrative triumphs over fact in the #media: a 🧵. Let's start with criminal offences. In fact, overseas commercial #surrogacy is ILLEGAL for residents of NSW. Sydney, obviously, is NSW's capital. @smh fails to mention this.
International #commercialsurrogacy is also illegal for residents of the ACT and QLD. This article does not state this either. It fails to mention where these people are from. It does not question the legality of their actions.
Quote from a NSW Govt 2016 paper. Here's more: 'The commercialisation of human reproduction via #surrogacy arrangements increases the risk of #exploitation of women, in particular those who are #poor, and lack the education and capacity to negotiate and give informed consent.'
And what about the #children produced? Are they #donorconceived? Either way, they run the risk of being unable 'to identify or contact their birth mother and/or biological parents', with all the fun that that entails. I literally just wrote a book on that. amazon.com.au/Brave-New-Huma…
The ethics and legality are not covered at all in this piece. Just the consumer's concerns. Named interviewees are people who derive their income from the practice of #surrogacy, including commercial surrogacy, and do not mention #exploitation, #childrensrights, illegality, etc.
This, I find, is an intriguing line: 'They could help the #surrogate mother move to a safe neighbouring country, but that would invalidate the #surrogacy contract, which was created under Ukrainian law.' What's more important? Safely escaping war? Or a baby contract? #ukraine
