📢 Scientists of the @IPCC_CH released their latest report today. #Climatechange is causing dangerous & widespread disruption, the report finds. #Gender features prominently and is mainstreamed throughout the report. Here are a few key takeaways: ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg2/
Gender worsens the impact of #climatechange, making it harder for women & gender minorities to cope. But even among women, the impact won’t be uniform. Location, poverty, race/ethnicity, religion and age all compound an individual’s vulnerability to #climatechange
This means women and gender minorities who are poorer with limited access to resources, those from marginalized communities and elderly women will be hit harder. Some of this I’ve unpacked in my previous reporting. indiaspend.com/as-climate-cha…
Poor women are forced to prioritize filling water for their family over going to college, for instance, as I reported from the ground in Rajasthan in May 2019. indiaspend.com/rajasthan-is-g…
Migration is another key report theme. “It is men who are moving, with women left to handle unproductive farms and livestock, while also undertaking all care work from older parents or young children,” says @iihsin senior researcher @_chandnisingh, a lead author of the report.
Even when women migrate, they’re exposed to new climate risks in cities they are ill prepared for, such as living in houses prone to seasonal flooding and leakages, or higher work burdens to collect water. In a nutshell, leaving doesn’t fix the problem.
@ISBedu Hyderabad research director @AnjalPrakash, a lead author of the report: “Adaptation strategies can worsen social inequities, including gender, unless explicit efforts are made to change those unequal power dynamics, including spaces to foster inclusive decision making.”
When women’s voices are not included, obvious gains for them could fly under the radar, which my latest story for @FullerProject unpacks. Alternatively, if there are fallouts, they would be discovered only later, the report warns. fullerproject.org/story/india-ea…
This report by Working Group II of @IPCC_CH is a guide for journalists like me reporting from a developing country on the intersections to pay attention to. At @FullerProject, I hope to unpack some of this impact in my reporting in the months ahead. Stay tuned!
