[1/6] 🤚🏽Heads up, Twitter community!✋🏽
Calling all folk who have been asked to be an evidence-giver (e.g. speaker, expert, etc) in a mini-public, like a Citizens’ Jury, Citizens’ Assembly and so on. 🎺We want to hear from you. 🎺
[2/6] ❓Why did you *decline* the invitation? Was it workload? The timing of the event? A bit of imposter syndrome? Hatred of public speaking? Unfamiliarity of the role?
[3/6]❓ Why did you *accept* the invitation? How did you find the experience? Would you be an evidence-giver again? What might have made it easier for you, as an evidence-giver?

Today, I will try my hand at live tweeting insights from "A #Home of One's Own", a two-day #researchworkshop on socially & economically #marginalised women's experiences of and negotiations with #genderinequalities in #informalurbanhousing in India.
This workshop has been organised by #JadavpurUniversity (School of Women's Studies), #RabindraBharathiUniversity (Centre for Women's Studies) and #Parichiti, a women's organisation. All three are research partners on a #GCRF project funded by @GoldsmithsUoL.
Since Oct 2018, I have collaborated with Dr. Henrike Donner, who is leading it, to develop #researchcollaborations with #educational and #development organisations in India to implement a pilot study on #genderurbanhousing. This workshop marks the end of the first phase.

2019 is the 50th edition of the #SIPRIYearbook. Join SIPRI as we celebrate the occasion with a 50-day countdown and share the history of the Yearbook over the past 50 years. Watch the introductory video with SIPRI Director @dansmith2020:
The first #SIPRIYearbook was published in 1969 with the aim ‘to produce a factual and balanced account of a controversial subject—the arms race and attempts to stop it’. The rise in world military spending and disarmament efforts, including the #NPT, take central focus.
'In whatever way the nuclear situation is examined, the inescapable feature is what enormous quantities of weapons have been amassed' – Movement towards a first-strike capability by the #US and #USSR, the #SALT talks and European security were a focus of the 1970 #SIPRIYearbook.

Day 2. Still pre-conference. I must confess that while taking notes today, I sincerely wondered to myself: how will I condense this much information in a way that its essence is not lost? So much was said; so much needs to be done. Oya grab your seat. @LagosStudies #lsa2019
The first panel was the Gender and Academy II. Panelists were Yetunde Zaid, Lynn Schler, Bamidele Wale-Oshinowo, Oyeronke Oyewunmi, Mojubaolu Olufunke Okome (@mojubaolu) and Taibat Lawanson (@TaibatLawanson) The first question shows that mentorship comes in various forms.
Who was your first mentor?:

"My first mentor was my Ph.D. supervisor. He was good @ treating students equally&that gave everyone a sense of confidence when starting out with their career. It distilled any competition that we might have&developed a sense of community.” Schler

Hilo.

1930.

Some key takeaways from @lhammondsoas on Day 1 of @GCRF @UKRI_News #GCRFAddis
1️⃣ Vulnerability is rooted in multiple inequalities
2️⃣ Vulnerabilities shift and change over time
3️⃣ Migration is important mechanism for coping with vulnerability
4️⃣ Policy can increase vulnerability
First #GCRFAddis panel on youth, gender and remittances. Interesting findings from @REFHorn on complex and variable ways in which youth training programmes in Uganda influence migration decisions including whether to return to S Sudan, move within country, migrate internationally
Context is everything in designing youth employment programmes. Fascinating example from @neelamraina on ways Kashmiri culture and identity shape hopes/aspirations of young people for the future. If difference makes you who you are then programmes should build on this #GCRFAddis

We often get into debates with people about women in Islam. How they dress. Are they allowed to study. Are they forced to wear Hijabs, Can Muslim women ever be femisnists, Are they oppressed. What the Quran says on this or that. On #WomensDay let me share some insights
The recent global socio-political climate, has been such that the phrase “Muslim woman” might conjure an image of a demure powerless woman sheltered by her burqa, oppressed by her hijab. Yet this image is not what history records or what present shows.
Muslims believe that the first verses revealed to Prophet Muhammed were the first five verses in Surat Al-Alaq ("The Clot"), which orders people to seek knowledge.
Seeking knowledge is thus obligatory for every Muslim, male and female

#Privilege means you’re given unearned advantages based on a social norm or value. #Race, #gender, #class, #disability, & #sexuality are all major social systems which value certain bodies & behaviors over others.
Fatphobia & slim/size privilege are produced by systems of gender, race & class. How? By the production of beauty norms & medical standards of health which are based on middle class whiteness & directed mostly violently at women.
Thought big booties are recently valued (notably most when they are not on the bodies of black women, especially fat black women), the bodies historically most celebrate were/are thin white women. This is an ideal that harms all women & encourages us to all hate our bodies.

Today, in the second part of my short series, I've posted about how I came to see that the NT authors understood the freedom of the gender binary and applied it in their approach to masculinity - The Bible and the Binary (Part One) thinktheology.co.uk/blog/article/t… #gender @thinktheology
So if the NT authors embraced the freedom of the gender binary, does that mean that men and women can live in exactly the same way? I don't think so. Today I explore what the NT says about how we should express our gender identity.

Today I'm continuing to explore the freedom of the gender binary, now considering some of the practical implications relevant to all of us: 'The Freedom of the Gender Binary in Action' thinktheology.co.uk/blog/article/t… #identity via @thinktheology

Can I instead write an article about how the concept of guilty pleasures in based in classism, racism, & sexism instead? Because “low brow” often means poor/working class, racialized or feminized things? How bout that article?

#AcademicTwitter #Elitism
Further, half the things people are replying about—sci-fi (my own research), reality TV & gaming—are things people do actual real research on already.
I also feel like this article concept is another way of performing that academics can’t embrace pleasure, that work can not be pleasurable. I say fuck that and read @adriennemaree’s new book Pleasure Activism next month when it drops.

1/ Everyone seems to be talking about WTO reform at the moment. Thought I would share some of my thoughts. This conversation has been a long time coming. The membership of the @WTO has been skirting around the issue since #MC10 in 2015 (and before @DmitryOpines & others whisper).
2/ In 2015, the WTO held the 10th Ministerial Conference. This was the first time there was no agreement among all the countries (and territories) present were unable to agree to continue the Doha Development Round of trade negotiations. #DDA. They agreed to disagree.
3/ Lots of historical reasons for this (and a separate discussion in itself) but result was that the @WTO no longer had an overarching trade negotiation to aim towards. This meant that the membership once again focused on the regular functioning of the organisation.

So, I've waded through the Evangelical Alliance's new pastoral "guidelines" for interacting with trans people (ughh, the things I do to expose #transphobic #ciswits to the world), and let's just say it's time to tear this particular sh*t-bag a new hole.

So, straight off the bat, first page of text, the use of #language is . . . well, yeah, see for yourself:

"It is important to remember that transgender is not simply an issue to be debated;" - p5, #Transformed

*sigh*

When such language gets reinforced by insisting...
