Short thread with a hope, probably in vain, of reaching climate-concerned anti-nuclear people who might be feeling a little introspective right now. #climatechange
In last 2 days I have:
- Seen growth in global coal in the BP stats.
- sat in Energy Mines and Money conference, hearing from Aussie coal executives and Chinese + Japanese coal investors.
- watched a massive new mine win approval to send coal to India.

So, maybe, a valid POV...
I’m not even sure how to parse this, but here goes.

The difference between the story so many of us have been telling ourselves about renewables taking over, and the actual bedrock truth of global energy?

This is a yawning, gaping chasm of reality. It cannot be bridged.

There is a severe and growing #climate and #water disaster in India.
Delhi just saw its highest ever June temperature of 48C. Churu, Rajasthan saw highs of 50.8C, making it the hottest place on earth.

Hundreds of Indian villages have evacuated as historic drought forces abandonment of homes in search of water. 80% of districts in Karnataka & 72% in Maharashtra are suffering drought & crop failure. Violent conflicts are growing between the two states over shared #water.

In Beed, India clean drinking #water is gone. There’s not have enough water to wash clothes, clean dishes, or flush toilets. Hospitals are filling up with people suffering from dehydration and water-related sickness from drinking contaminated water.

1) I love trees. I’ll say it. I love running on trails, walking the dog, biking with the kids. Nature good. There is a lot of talk in town lately about trees. A lot of side-taking (as if anyone is anti-tree??). What is getting lost in this is the bigger, more complex picture.
2) It’s easy to frame this as good people v. evil, greedy developers – that’s so easy. Which side would you be on? But the real story is far more complex. And it’s a story about equity, and diversity, and affordability. Issues pro-tree people also care deeply about.
3) But no one’s really talking about that part. So, here goes… Chapel Hill has had a rural buffer in place since the late ‘80s. This means that there is a circle around the edge of town beyond which we have agreed not to develop.

Let’s talk about the tundra. It’s very beautiful! Here’s some subarctic/alpine tundra near the Swedish-Norwegian-Finnish border where I did fieldwork. (1/17) A scientist hiking in the northern Swedish mountain tundra
Do you see any trees? Nope- there aren’t any in the tundra! The permafrost & climate prevent plants w/ very deep roots from growing. Depending on location are tall or short shrubs (in the pic below). There’s also grass, flowering plants, mosses and lichens. (2/17) Small shrubs growing in the Swedish subarctic/alpine tundra
Depending on how you define tundra, it covers a large area of the earth’s land (~8%). It also stores a lot of carbon underground, which is being released with #climatechange. nytimes.com/2017/05/08/cli… (3/17)

Liar.

The New York Times has compiled a list of the 84 environmental rules on their way out during your nightmare presidency.
Here are the ones that have been completed so far:
"1. Canceled a requirement for oil and gas companies to report methane emissions. (EPA)"
#LiarInChief
"2. Revised and partially repealed an Obama-era rule limiting methane emissions on public lands, including intentional venting and flaring from drilling operations.
(Interior Department)"
#ClimateChangeIsReal #ThursdayThoughts
"3. Loosened a Clinton-era rule designed to limit toxic emissions from major industrial polluters. (EPA)"

The season is not the best time for #Rhododendrons, because late winter rains in February-March wash away the blooms, affecting local population dependent on making juice, jams and jellies from the flowers.

Second evening in a row with #tornado watches & warnings for our area.
This is NOT a tornado area.
Or at least it did not used to be.
Continuing to ignore #ClimateCrisis will not make it go away, it will just mean more and more Americans will be facing the impact of these storms.
Any candidate who is minimizing the #ClimateCrisis is not viable. This is one of the top concerns for voters--particularly voters under 50 who will be disproportionately impacted by #ClimateChange. Only candidates with serious and comprehensive climate plans should be considered.

I know I was joking with @bryanbehar about disaster movies, but I follow this modeling and this is gearing up to be deadly. Follow local orders. Be smart. And others think about giving through Red Cross or other efforts. 1/
I’ll get into my (no one listens to me) policy discussion about how our entire disaster management process is flawed, thenational flood insurance program needs to be revamped, and rethinking where we put our damn military bases (looking at you Offutt AFB) once this has ended. 2/
A little tease. We built an entire disaster management system around notion they were random and rare. I think that notion is flawed. #climatechange democracyjournal.org/magazine/39/sm… 3/

#AmashTownHall

Crazy -- the first question, the guy says he read the entire Mueller Report. Amash apparently draws an educated audience.

The questioner stated he thought Trump crossed the threshold for impeachment.
2nd questioner asks about the children being separated at the border.

Amash says he is concerned and they are working on legislation. The need more resources on the border.

Amash sounds reasonable.
3rd questioner -- all men so far --

"first I want to salute your courage" -- gets standing ovation.
This questioner states that he was in Vietnam.

Then asks if there is a way to amend the constitution so the electorate gets a mulligan.

Hilarious. He gets a laugh.

Moving the @OntarioSciencCtr to Ontario place is a terrible idea. The Science Centre is more than a building or an attraction, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t know about.

We’ve been here over a year, and from within the walls, let me tell you about the Centre.

The building itself is an artefact. The Science Centre is celebrating 50 years this year, both as an institution and as a building. It’s classic Centenary Year Canadian Brutalism.

Here’s one reality, we should be spending more money to stay on Earth than planning to leave to go to Mars because Earth’s Atmosphere is no longer viable to sustain life. Research is important but Mars Doesn’t Have an Atmosphere. Millions of people can’t live there in 125 years‼️

THREAD: The most important and most under-reported #climatechange story of the year: global methane levels are unexpectedly surging and scientists are ringing the alarm bells, calling on countries to stop methane emissions from fossil-fuel operations. ft.com/content/9a3c05…
NOAA just released data showing that global atmospheric methane leapt up last year, marking the 2nd highest jump in the last 20 years and extending a 12 year surge, a surge that has accelerated by 50% over the past 5 years. 2/n
Here’s the kicker: global methane levels were stable for much of the 2000s and the models built for the Paris Climate Agreement assumed they would remain stable under BAU – but instead they are rising at rate near historic highs 3/n

India (Bhārat), aka Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya) constitutes a mosaic of paradoxes and contradictions starting with the existence of gigantic socio-economic disparities which are in sharp contrast with the spectacular technological development in most productive sectors.
Such contradictions reflect significant measurement discrepancies which, in India's case, could be on the order of hundreds of millions of people.
Furthermore, there is the problem of Islamic terrorists, who are trained abroad and find easy fuel in the contradictions within it.
Finally, there’s agriculture which, by some estimates, accounts for 90% of India’s water consumption. Farmers meet irrigation demands by indiscriminately extracting groundwater, which some say accounts for a quarter of the world’s groundwater usage.

Energy-watchers should check the latest @IEA World Energy Investment report released this week. webstore.iea.org/download/direc…

It contains some fascinating data suggesting that the energy transition is happening much faster than we think. (HT @TimBuckleyIEEFA for pointing this out)
@IEA @TimBuckleyIEEFA As is often highlighted by critics of energy transition, global coal generation was never higher than it was in 2018.

That covers up substantial differences though. In the past decade it fell nearly 40% in the U.S. and nearly 25% in Europe, but rose 60% in Asia:
