The Rand Corp. has a paper on how to combat the 'firehose of falsehoods,' a Russian propaganda technique.

(The technique is also used by Fox and America's far right-wing. What a coincidence, right?)

The paper is here: rand.org/pubs/perspecti…

1/
The use of this method tells rapid and continuous stream of lies.

The user exhibits a “shameless willingness” to tell outrageous lies that lots of people know are lies.

The liar doesn’t care about consistency. He doesn’t care if it’s obvious he’s lying.

2/
The goal is the “disruption of truthful reporting and messaging.”

While we must refute the falsehoods, “retractions and refutations are seldom effective.”

Therefore, “Don’t expect to counter the Firehose of Falsehood with a squirt gun of truth.”

3/
Instead, the solution is to put raincoats on the population.

When people expect the lies from certain players, the lies more easily roll off.

In 2016, it was clear the Ukrainains were already wise to Russian propaganda models.

Many in the US were fooled.

4/
Biden understood that it's better to get in front of the lie.

It's harder to refute a lie after it's told.

That's why he rapidly approved the release of intelligence about what Putin was going to say and do.

He took away the liar's advantage: First impressions.

5/
Remember when Zelenskyy announced that he's the #1 Russian target (his family was #2) so that might be the last time we see him alive?

He flipped the narrative so if he did die, it's harder for Russia to say "oops it was an accident."

Zelenskyy knows who he's dealing with.

6/
Exactly. It's also important to understand why the liars lie.

Now, some vulnerable people believe whatever Fox News tells them. But many who spread the lies know they are lying and they are doing it for a reason.

The reason makes perfect sense . . .

7/

They lie because they want to destroy, and they know the lies destroy. I wrote this for Slate Magazine in 2018⤵️

If you all want me to keep going, I'll keep citing academic studies. 🤓

First, a quotation from Sarah Huckabee Sanders . . .

8/
slate.com/news-and-polit…
She defended Trump's lies by saying that the lies pointed out an important truth.

Scholars Oliver Hahl, Minjae Kim, and Ezra W. Zickerman Sivan, in “The Authentic Appeal of the Lying Demagogue,” explain. . . .

9/
This is about the liars in the United States, not the liars ruling Russia.

In Russia, the lies maintain fascism.

In the US, they are designed to destroy the "political establishment."

Why do they want to do that?

Paper: journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…

10/
The people who want to destroy the "political establishment" believe that the government no longer represents people "like them" and thus lacks legitimacy.

This brings us to why the US embraces Putin's Russia. I have a few recent threads on that:

11/
Correct ⤵️

To connect all the dots: People who accept lies from people like Trump and Putin do so because the lies speak to what they think is an underlying "truth" such as "Ukraine is part of Russia" or "whites are the real Americans."

Hi, @FrankLuntz, you're getting lots of answers.

One answer comes from the political psychologist.

But first, the simpler answer: The modern Republican Party + Putin = true love because they have common goals.

1/
Putin’s regime, remember, is built on white nationalism, homophobia, and fear of those who are different.

As part of Putin’s rejection of all things communist, he embraced Christianity and aligned himself with American evangelicals.

Here is a timeline . . .

2/
2013: Russia enacted anti-homosexual legislation.
theguardian.com/world/2013/jun…

2014: Pat Buchanan said Putin was “entering a claim that Moscow is the Godly city of today.” He praised Putin for stamping out western evil like easy divorce and homosexuality.

I'll start with what we know about the Manhattan DA story.

The NYT reported that two prosecutors, Dunne and Pomerantz, resigned.

(The information in the article comes from “people with knowledge of the matter.”)

1/
Here's the NYT story: nytimes.com/2022/02/23/nyr…

Reportedly they resigned because Bragg, the Manhattan DH, has doubts about moving forward.

It also appears that Weisselberg will not cooperate (he won’t flip on Trump) and either will any other executives.

2/
Bragg doesn’t say much, but he says the investigation is “ongoing.” (Who knows what that means.)

We do know that Weisselberg and the Trump Org are indicted and set to go to trial.

One (very unlikely) possibility is that it's slam dunk case and Bragg got cold feet.

People who are surprised that the GOP is siding with an autocratic dictator over Western democracy miss an important part of American history:
Autocracy is deep in our history.

A multi-racial democracy didn't come to America until recently.

Slavery was autocratic. . .
. . . Jim Crow was autocratic.

The GOP's pushback against America transitioning to a true multi-racial democracy goes hand-in-hand with supporting a dictator like Putin.

It's perfectly consistent.
Putin stages elections in which the result is known beforehand.

Members of the GOP were cool with fair elections when the choice was between two white men.

Now . . . not so much.

Putin knows how to wield disinformation and he knows that the United States is divided: A large portion of the population, including the most influential voices from a major political party, want the United States to emulate his Russia.

1/
Some background:

After Russia enacted anti-homosexual legislation, Pat Buchanan said Putin was “entering a claim that Moscow is the Godly city of today" because he was stamping out western evils like easy divorce and homosexuality.
buchanan.org/blog/whose-sid…

2/
British right-winger Katie Hopkins, in an article in which she was interviewed with her friend Ann Coulter, said “Putin rocks.”

Katie Hopkins then went on to praise Russia as being “untouched by the myth of multiculturalism and deranged diversity."

Trump lost in court THREE MORE TIMES today.

Trump tried to get all three of these cases⤵️ dismissed and lost. I analyzed one of the cases last April, Blassingame, here: (Transcript on my blog.)

He tends not to do well in court, where facts matter.

1/
The defendants made the following arguments (screenshot #1)

Trump also claims, among other things, that he has absolute immunity. (#2)

It turns out that the absolute immunity question isn't as easy as you might think (but Trump still lost).

2/
If you want to get caught up on one of the cases, my analysis from last April is here:terikanefield.com/blassingame-v-…

And here:

Um . . . this isn't the defense Trump thinks it is.

Trump published a letter he received from Mazars dated (it looks like) 2014. He then summarized the letter.

#1: What Mazars said
#2: What Trump says Mazars said

Me = 🤦‍♀️

Does he think nobody can or will actually read it?
Mazars said, "Trump is responsible for preparing the financial statement."

Also Mazars does not "undertake to obtain or provide any assurance that there are no material modifications that should be made . . . "
Trump posts the letter and says Mazars "strongly states that all work was performed in accordance with professional standards and that there were "no material discrepancies in the financial statements."

There is no "I don't know how to read" defense.
