DEADLINE: Wisconsin Republicans are sprinting to the extreme right—which raises the stakes if they win the governorship, but creates an opportunity to defeat them and reelect Gov Tony Evers. Read and help hit our midnight goal of 50 new monthly donors: secure.actblue.com/donate/febeom2…
The Republicans have been wild in Wisconsin for a long time. But over the last few weeks, they’ve gotten even wilder—and scarier.
Two weeks ago, Wisconsin’s leading conspiracy theorist state Rep. Timothy Ramthun (aka #TrumpyTim) announced his candidacy for governor, sending the GOP primary—already reeling from Kevin Nicholson’s announcement—spiraling even further into chaos.
washingtonpost.com/politics/wisco…
Despite the multiple recounts, court cases, audits, and even an investigation by Trump's own Department of Homeland Security having confirmed that the 2020 election was safe and secure, #TrumpyTim Ramthun’s focus is still on somehow reversing Trump’s loss.
abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireS…
#TrumpyTim’s attempts to overturn Wisconsin’s election are a dangerous threat to democracy—not only does he want to make voting more difficult, but he’s also STILL trying to pass a resolution overturning the last election. Learn more at trumpytim.com
And given #TrumpyTim’s strong connection to Trump’s base, his entrance into the GOP primary is throwing Rebecca Kleefisch and Kevin Nicholson’s campaigns into disarray. Their response? Both announced their own plans to destroy democracy in Wisconsin.
jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
#RadicalRebecca Kleefisch, now facing down a swath of primary challengers, is doing everything she can to compete in this divisive and competitive primary. She released a plan to make radical changes to our election system.
Moreover, Kleefisch, who previously acknowledged that Biden won the 2020 election, now says he didn’t win fairly. She also won’t even say if Wisconsin’s 2020 votes should’ve counted. jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
Meanwhile, #AntiChoiceKevin Nicholson came out swinging against Kleefisch’s plan, calling it “an attempt to grab headlines”—while proposing his own dangerous plan to abolish the Wisconsin Elections Commission & shift the duties to the partisan office of the Secretary of State.
In Wisconsin, the Secretary of State hasn’t run elections in nearly 50 years. For many years, election oversight was under a nonpartisan board of former state judges; then the GOP shifted it to a bipartisan board of appointees.
Now, the GOP wants a partisan elected official in charge of election oversight: usnews.com/news/best-stat…
Trying to get noticed, Kevin Nicholson now acknowledges that Biden won, and is now blasting away at Ramthun and Kleefisch for “not telling the truth,” but called 2020 a ”messy, sloppy, messed up election” to hide his attacks on the voting system.
cbs58.com/news/kevin-nic…
All of this primary infighting comes in the midst of a prolonged and outrageous “investigation” into the 2020 election led by extreme right-winger and former Wisconsin state Supreme Court Justice with a penchant for untruth, Michael Gableman.
jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
Gableman, appointed by Robin Vos, could compel people to testify publicly. Instead, he’s issuing illegal subpoenas demanding private interrogations—and now asking a judge to order the jailing of mayors of Green Bay, Madison, and Racine for non-compliance. wispolitics.com/2022/gableman-…
To top it all off, one of the GOP members of the Wisconsin Election Commission—Bob Spindell, who was also a 2020 fraudulent elector—is now arguing that 2020, while legal, was also “rigged” for Biden.
madison.com/news/state-and…
Oh: and last week, Republican state legislators just passed another raft of anti-democracy bills and sent them to Governor Evers, who already stopped six anti-voting bills last year.
wbay.com/2022/02/25/wis…
This GOP crack-up, combined with an obsession for re-litigating their last loss and battling about who can hurt voters more, has yielded a crop of disastrous stories for Wisconsin Republicans. Let’s review them.
As @ReidEpstein reports, “the Republican effort to overturn the election results here is picking up steam rather than fading away — and spiraling further from reality as it goes.”
nytimes.com/2022/02/19/us/…
Politico reports that the Wisconsin GOP civil war “may have disastrous implications for the party in the fall” — because, as one county chair puts it, “We’re going to spend millions of dollars tearing ourselves apart.”
politico.com/news/2022/02/2…
Vice’s @cam_joseph quotes an anonymous Wisconsin GOP strategist saying “You haven’t done enough to make the ‘election was stolen’ people happy or give them what they want, but you’re also doing too much for anyone with any sanity.”
vice.com/en/article/dyp…
As the most in-depth look at the stakes in the fight, a deep dive by @AndyKroll, concludes, “Wisconsin is more than a laboratory for new policies and bold ideas; it’s a trial for whether democracy can survive at all.”
rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
The GOP continues to spread its Big Lie about the 2020 election. Career Republican politicians figured they could feed the conspiracists and ride their rage to power. But now the conspiracists run the show, and the party is fracturing.
What’s particularly fascinating about the whole thing is that it’s the exact opposite of the kind of unity that the Wisconsin GOP prided itself on when it took power twelve years ago. In 2010, the WisGOP credited its success to a “unite or die” mentality.
nationalreview.com/2020/08/wiscon…
In 2010—a year that, like 2022, involved a brewing GOP effort to capitalize on backlash against a new Dem president—the Wisconsin Republican grassroots and insiders were all on one team. Scott Walker, Rebecca Kleefisch, Ron Johnson, & the Tea Party worked together, hand in glove.
Sure, behind the scenes, the Walker team scorned Rebecca Kleefisch as “radioactive,” but publicly they said “We are excited to have her on the ticket.” WisGOP chair Reince Priebus (yes, that Reince Priebus) had a party singing from the same hymnbook.
isthmus.com/news/news/john…
Fast forward to now, and the GOP is in complete disarray. As Kevin Nicholson puts it, it’s a “broken machine.” The grassroots don’t trust the leading candidates, and the candidates are responding by lunging even further to the extreme.
This offers Wisconsin a huge opportunity for Democrats to reelect our governor, oust Ron Johnson, and win key races up and down the ticket.
This opportunity only turns into victory if we do absolutely everything in our power to seize the moment. That means organizing in every corner of the state—in rural Wisconsin, cities and suburbs—with *everyone.*
That also means building our voter protection operation, to ensure Wisconsinites know exactly how, where, and when to vote despite constant GOP attempts to make it harder for eligible Wisconsinites to vote.
And it means communicating, consistently and clearly, exactly what Democrats are for, and why Republicans are doing what they’re doing. Demonstrating that Democrats have delivered, and that Republicans are in disarray.
We’re looking for 50 new monthly donors to join us by midnight on Feb 28. Monthly donations are our financial lifeblood—they give us predictable support so we can hire the staff to do the work. Help us hit our Feb goal and sign up to become one of them:

Ron Johnson knew Trump was withholding military aid from Ukraine and kept his mouth shut—then voted to acquit Trump, and now blames Dems for Putin’s invasion. He’s willing to say anything to serve his ambition and political agenda. An absolute disgrace.
huffpost.com/entry/ron-john…
On Sunday, Ron Johnson made the ludicrous and ghastly argument that it was Trump’s impeachment that weakened Ukraine. In fact, as he well knows, the point of the impeachment was that Trump deliberately weakened our Ukrainian ally for political extortion.
When Johnson found out that Trump was withholding military aid to Ukraine, he was concerned. He even confronted Trump about it. But when it became clear that throwing Ukraine under the bus would help Trump’s reelection, he was all for it.

Wisconsinites voted on Tuesday in spring primary elections—from Milwaukee mayor to small-town school boards and city councils. Now we have 47 days until April 5, the biggest local election day in the nation’s most critical state before this November. Critical work to do—THREAD:
Milwaukee is Wisconsin’s biggest city, responsible for ~12% of Biden’s WI votes in 2020. In a seven-way primary, progressive Mayor @CavalierJohnson came in first—but Republican Bob Donovan came in second. They’ll face off in the general election.
Milwaukee is a Democratic city. But in Wisconsin, never take anything for granted. We’re going to be organizing our socks off in the Milwaukee mayoral general election. Last night, @WisDems proudly endorsed @CavalierJohnson. It’s go time. Image

NEW AD: Ron Johnson—who grabbed a massive tax break for himself and his biggest donors—is now refusing to lift a finger to get good-paying union jobs in Wisconsin. Help spread this so more voters see it:
Johnson is refusing to “insert himself” in the fight to ensure that Oshkosh, his hometown, gets 1,000 well-paid union jobs building USPS postal trucks. “It’s not like we don’t have enough jobs in Wisconsin,” he says. How out of touch can Johnson be?!
jsonline.com/story/news/pol…
Now, @WisDems is running this ad digitally to folks in Oshkosh to spread the word that Ron Johnson opposes good jobs in their community. We would call it *his* community, but he seems more interested in jobs going to South Carolina.

WISCONSINITES: Election Day is Tuesday! It’s the primary for our local spring elections—which matter more this year than ever. I was on @Maddow last night talking about it! Watch the clip… and then read and share this thread:
Wisconsin’s election on Tuesday, February 15 is the primary for April 5 general elections for judges, mayors, city councilmembers, school boards, and more. All of these offices matter. And some of them affect how elections are administered—which has enormous implications.
Anti-democracy, Big Lie-believing Republicans are getting involved in these races.

Thread: Wisconsin Republicans now have two candidates for governor—and, attempting to out-radical each other, they’re ripping each other apart. It’s Republicans in disarray, and it’s revealing just how politically toxic they’d be if elected. Read on for more:
Kevin Nicholson announced he’s running for Wisconsin governor. #AntiChoiceKevin is bad for Wisconsin—supporting, as our new site explains, a total ban on abortion care with no exceptions. His run for governor has sent the Wisconsin GOP spiraling.
antichoicekevin.com
Even before his entering the GOP primary, Nicholson made headlines statewide by slamming Kleefisch (@RebeccaForReal) as “dumb as a bag of hammers” after Kleefisch said Republicans should “hire mercenaries” to help with “ballot harvesting” to win in ‘22.

DEADLINE: Voting rights stalled in the Senate. Channel your rage into ramping up Plan B: Protecting voting rights and organizing in key states like Wisconsin—voter by voter. Read on for how to help, then become a monthly donor by the midnight FEC deadline:
secure.actblue.com/donate/janeom2…
The GOP’s plot to suppress and subvert its way to power in 2022 and 2024 depends on gaining enough control of enough states to overturn a presidential election. If we hold the line in Governorships like WI, MI, and PA, the GOP plot fails. And the closest of these is Wisconsin.
In America’s must-win tipping point state, the furthest extremes of the right are becoming more emboldened. A first-year far-right state Rep was filmed calling for Republicans to “cheat.” Another GOPer introduced a bill calling for election nullification.
