As the world watches in horror at the violence inflicted upon the Ukrainian people, we join the growing call from people of conscious all around the world in #StandingWithUkraine. No matter who you are, all people have the right to safety in their homes and on their land.
Palestinians, like many people, know all too well the pain and suffering of military invasion and occupation. So when we see images from Ukraine we can’t help but empathize with another group that knows that pain too.
Everyone should be protected from violence. When people's homes and lives are under threat, anyone would fight to defend themselves and the ones they love.
No parent should be forced to make the impossible choice of fleeing with their children for safety or defending the only home they’ve ever known. But when they do, refugees should be welcomed with open arms, whether they’re from Ukraine or Syria, Ethiopia, Yemen, and beyond.
When militaries and politicians use violence against an entire population, they must be held accountable for the harm they’ve inflicted. The world is more dangerous when oppressors don’t face consequences.
All people have the right to live freely and safely in their homes and on their land. The world should stand with Ukrainians, and extend those same values to all oppressed people so that all human life is valued.

Last night, before dawn, Israeli soldiers killed 18-year-old Shadi Najim and 22-year-old Abdullah al-Husari after invading a Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin and opening fire on a group of local youth protesting the invasion.
Renowned Palestinian Poet Samih al-Qasim dedicated this poem to revolutionary Congolese leader & the first Congolese President, Patrice Lumumba (credit Africa4Palestine)
Internationally known civil rights leader, Dr. Angela Davis has long expressed & acted in solidarity w/ the Palestinian people. Notably, in 2016 Davis released her book “Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement''.
Some things to remember as you discuss or report on what's happening in Palestine right now:
1. Under international law, East Jerusalem is Palestinian land that is illegally occupied by Israel.
2. Israel forcibly removes Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem and encourages Jewish settlers to take over. There are more than 300,000 Jewish settlers living illegally on occupied Palestinian land in East Jerusalem.
3. Israel's policy when it comes to East Jerusalem is clear: reduce the number of Palestinians and increase the number of Jewish Israelis, also known as "Judaization." In other words, ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
Israel’s destruction of the Salahiya family home is not an isolated incident.
It is part of Israel’s ongoing effort to steal Palestinian homes and land in order to replace Palestinians with Israeli settlers whose presence on Palestinian land is illegal.
It is the same goal that Israel was founded on when it violently expelled hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in 1948 in what is called the Nakba.
The Nakba never ended. Today it looks like what is happening to the Salahiyas.
But the Salahiyas are far from the only family who Israel is targeting.
Palestinians experience the Nakba every day through Israel’s relentless destruction of Palestinian homes, arrests, beatings, and killings.
BREAKING: Israeli military has begun to destroy the Sahaliya family home in occupied Sheikh Jarrah with bulldozers, at 5:40am Jerusalem time, after arresting the family and barricading the area at 3am.
Israeli soldiers spared no one as they stormed the home at 3 am, beating all who were present and breaking multiple individuals' legs and arms before kidnapping Mahmoud Salahiya and two other family members, says a Salahiya family member.
Yasmin Salahiya, whose home is being destroyed right now, says her father, Mahmoud Salahiya had not slept in days when Israeli soldiers forced him awake to arrest and remove him from his home before demolishing it.
BREAKING: Israeli Border Police Arrest Salahiya Family & Expel Them from Their Home #SaveSheikhJarrah
The Salahiya family has been fighting to protect their home against Israel’s increased efforts to kick #Palestinians out of East Jerusalem in order to give their homes and land to Israeli settlers.
We are witnessing ethnic cleansing in action.
Mahmoud Salahiya, who Israel has now arrested for protecting his home, had this to say yesterday:
“We will not flee again. We have nowhere else to go. You expelled us once already in 1948. We either die in our home or we live. We are not leaving,”
