I just got done in bail court today. And I have something all you #FreeTamaraLich nuts need to hear. Her treatment in bail court isn't evidence of systemic oppression against her or against your cause. It's evidence the system sucks. Just you usually don't care, or notice. 1/7
Many criminal lawyers agree bail could have and probably should have been fashioned in this case. Often called "bail set not met." Something like as soon as she agrees to go home and stop breaking the law, she can be released. That would have been reasonable and appropriate. 2/7
Now I know, you don't think she was breaking the law at all. She probably doesn't either. But hopefully if you have a speck of sense you'll realize the system doesn't ask people if they feel something should be legal or not. We don't choose the laws we obey. No one does. 3/7
But yeah, she didn't need to get detained. Neither do many, many, many people who are detained every day. Or released on insane conditions that all but guarantee they'll fail. It happens every day, all the time. Just not to anyone you give a shit about. 4/7
I just watched Court release a guy on bail. He's got no record and is accused of punching someone in his building. But now he's homeless and going to a shelter indefinitely, because he can't go home. You think that's going to work for long? He'll be back. No record. 5/7
We can disagree on masks, vaccines, and everything else in the world. But hear this. You're not seeing some kind of special one-off injustice. You're seeing exactly what happens every day to people who are poor, racialized, and without even the expectation of routine justice. 6/7
Privileged people find it easy to imagine they are under intentional attack when they start experiencing things that other people live with all the time. It truly shouldn't happen, even to Tamara Lich. But I'm telling you, it isn't just her. You've just never seen it before. 7/7
Just to follow up. Of the people pissed off at me, it's a good split between Tamara Lich supporters and people who love that the system nailed her and don't care how or if the law supports it, or what it means for the next accused. So, I think I got this one about right. X/7
