The Product Manager Operating System - Part 2

8 templates and frameworks. This time focused on Product Strategy

Inspired by Netflix, Google, Shopify, and more.

🧵
So what is Product Strategy?

It can feel nebulous, but it's a high-level approach you're taking to achieve your business goals.

An art - not a science.

@gibsonbiddle of Netflix fame has an amazing 13-part deep dive.

@gibsonbiddle Product Mission & Vision 👁

Why the product exists in a short, inspiring statement.

Such as:

- IKEA: To create a better everyday life for the many people.
- Shopify: Make commerce better for everyone, so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling products
@gibsonbiddle If Vision, Mission, and Strategy all sound the same or similar...

@aprildunford has a good breakdown of the difference between each one

@gibsonbiddle @aprildunford SWOT Analysis 🧐

This is Business 101 - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

It's a quick way to asses your business and where it stands in the market.

@MiroHQ has a simple but powerful template.
@gibsonbiddle @aprildunford @MiroHQ PESTLE Analysis 🕵🏼‍♀️

i.e. Political, Economics, Social, Technological, Legal, or Environmental.

Similar to SWOT but better for understand an organizations impact.

Again, Miro with a solid template. Image
@gibsonbiddle @aprildunford @MiroHQ Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) 🎯

First introduced by Intel, then re-applied successfully at Google.

Help teams focus on specific, measurable KPIs that align with the greater business goals.

If you achieve 100% of a goal, you were not aggressive enough. Image
@gibsonbiddle @aprildunford @MiroHQ A word of caution with OKRs ⚠️

They're great for large or established organizations.

If you're at an early-stage startup and think OKRs are a good idea, you're destined to fail.

@gibsonbiddle @aprildunford @MiroHQ Opportunity/Solution Trees 🌲

Make sure your ideas (i.e. solutions) align with a problem (i.e. opportunity)

As always, @ttorres is the best resource here 👇🏼

What do I actually want out of the Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

Thinking out loud about #prodmgmt, #buildinpublic, solopreneurship, and more. ⬇️
I started the year doing two things:

1. Snowboarding 🏂
2. Exploring what's next professionally 👨🏼‍💻

I did a lot of #1, now I'm refocusing on #2.
While exploring new roles, I've had a growing desire to have a toolkit that I can take with me from job to job.

Every role is unique. There's no copy and paste option.

But that doesn't mean experience and tools can't be transferred.

I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

My Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

The 9 templates and frameworks I've found super valuable in 10+ years of building and growing products.

Adopted from Basecamp, Amazon, and more.

A thread 🧵
The goals of a Product Manager Operating System (PMOS)

- Toolkit that can be applied to any role (with some situational tweaks)
- Help to quickly understand the product environment
- Built in ready to use, highly collaborative apps like Notion & Figma.

Let's dive in 👇
Business Model Canvas

Popular in the lean startup world. Also REALLY useful to understand how and why a business does what it does. Image

First product hire at a startup?

I've been there.

Here's 9 tips for your first 30 days.

🧵
1/ Know what you signed up for.

@Jenyangwong has 5 things to expect.

@Jenyangwong 2/ Understand WHY you were hired.

You might think you know already. Time to confirm.

@shreyas's product leader categories can help structure the conversation, even if you aren't in a people leader role.

Product Twitter is very vocal about the downsides of #prodmgmt.

Every job has its frustrations. But it's not all bad.

Here's 9 reasons why product is a great career path.
1/ Challenging

You don't get into product to coast.

The challenges make it rewarding. This makes it fun.
2/ Collaborative

You get to work with every business function.

A lot of the time, that's rolling up your sleeves to get hands-on.

Imposter syndrome is common in #prodmgmt

Here's 5 ways to fight it ✊

A thread 🧵
There is no one thing that triggers impost syndrome.

I've been in #prodmgmt for 5+ years.

In my experience, it usually comes from a lack of confidence related to a fear of

• The unknown
• Being wrong
• Failing
For me, this can be triggered by our lack of concrete deliverables

@idamezhim hits the nail on the head.

I agree with @alsterfalter. It's Nice to see the mental health talk in #prodmgmt

Here's a few of my favorites.

🧵
@alsterfalter Like @ProductChapter says, product is hard.

You're not alone in thinking or feeling that.
