#LongCovidKids in New Zealand 🇳🇿
A blog review of prolonged disease and sequelae in children after SARS-CoV-2 infection || including Long Covid and MIS-C || literature review and risk assessment with omicron
We need to appropriately report on #LongCovid in children: the risk is certainly not negligible! Many symptom-based studies risk to under-count and underestimate the numbers
There is urgent need to address the risk and treatment of #LongCovid in children: growing research shows kids can develop prolonged symptoms and sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection
Editorial in the key scientific journal @Nature out in early 2022
Children can experience persistent covid symptoms, although this remained poorly investigated as of late summer 2020. Yet, patient-led research and reports e.g. from @LongCovidKids clearly showed #LongCovidKids was a thing
Large meta-analysis of existing studies suggests #LongCovidKids is not rare | multiple symptoms ~ clinical signs identified, many of which overlap with those in adults | pre-print | limitation: study based on review of previous research
Myocardial involvement in a small sample of children from Italy's early wave in 2020. Some little patients report multi-system symptoms, later known as #MISC
Great thread about the current wave. People are less likely to go into respiratory failure --either because of vaccination | prior immunity or omicron intrinsic features -- or both
But covid is not a respiratory disease only. It's multi-system, with huge cardiovascular potential
Covid can affect all organs and body systems. It can present with prolonged symptoms and sequelae #LongCovid
This is not uncommon. It can be potentially with lifelong consequences. Even in the vaccinated and in those with mild or asymptomatic disease at onset
We obviously all hope vaccination will hold strong. The reduction in mortality and severe disease is important. But significant long-term effects and symptomatic disease are well documented in post-vaccination infections, too
We need to cut transmission. Period.
Ah this is an excellent point by @ErinSandersNP | clinical trials
We've been on an unrelanted SARS-CoV-2 spread for 2 years: a new, dangerous, highly contagious pathogen. Almost all world risk infection
We won't have "clean" dataset even for studying other diseases anymore
Biomedical research risks taking a huge hit from unleashed SARS-CoV-2 spread. "Historical" (i.e. pre pandemic) datasets will be useful to an extent. But as the time goes by, and new research is needed, SARS-CoV-2 infection | #LongCovid etc. risk to be huge confounding factors
I simplify a lot. Just a little example. Let's say you want to study autoimmune diseases like reumathoid arthritis or lupus (SLE). We know covid | SARS-CoV-2 infection have been linked to autoimmune phenomena. Many covid patients don't even have proven evidence of infection
Congratulations to @LongCovidKids
and allies for being at Downing Street today and raise awareness of #LongCovid in children and young people 🔥
Proud and committed as usual to support recognition of, and research, into #LongCovidKids
There are an estimated ~119.000 children and young people to have experienced #LongCovid in the UK alone. Around 21.000 have been ill for over 1 year. The real numbers could be even higher: some children might be living with subclinical ("silent") pathology or undiagnosed disease
We don't even know about the longest-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the years/decades to come. Data from other viral infections are sobering: we know viruses are associated, or suspected to be associated, with a wide range of conditions emerging much later from infection
It is critical to recognize covid | SARS-CoV-2 infection | #LongCovid do affect children and young people. We have known this since 2020. Advocacy and patient-led research has been crucial to the recognition of #LongCovidKids since the early pandemic days 💙
We have now a wealth of fresh, growing scientific evidence on #LongCovidKids. This is also from patient-led research and expertise.
It is critical policy makers and medical professionals are fully updated on, and open to address SARS-CoV-2 infection's sequelae
Wonderful to see @LongCovidKids new support guide freely available to families, patients, policy makers and medical professionals 🔥
Testimonials from young people with #LongCovid have been truly instrumental to shed a light on the disease. My gratitude
The @TheLancetEndo study makes use of a 181.280 people-strong cohort of covid patients. It compares their data with a massive pre-pandemic control group (no covid possible!) and a very large control group of contemporary people never diagnosed with covid
