First they said...

🌹First they said it doesn’t affect kids, it’s just the elderly. I didn't speak out because I was not old.

🌹 Then, they said don’t panic it’s just the sick & only those with comorbidities. I didn't speak out because I was not vulnerable.

🌹 Next, they said it’s ok if kids spend some days in hospital. I didn't speak out because my kids were not in hospital.

🌹Then, they said it's very few who get #LongCovid & #MISC post Covid. I didn't speak out because my kids didn't have side effects. 2/4
🌹Then, they said #childhospitalisations are high. But don't panic. They are hospitalised #withCovid and not #forCovid. I didn't speak out because my kids were asymptomatic. 3/4

🧵One of the great UNKNOWNS about the Omicron variant is the impact on children 4 weeks AFTER infection.
Before #Omicron 6,431 children in the U.S. were hospitalized for multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MISC) due to COVID & 55 of those kids died. Kids with MISC are SICK & require ICU care, often with blood pressure support, steroids, blood thinners, and sometimes life support
MISC is an inflammatory reaction in the body that develops about 4 weeks after infection with COVID. Each rise in COVID infection has been followed by an increase in #MISC 4 weeks later.…

Children infected with COVID-19 are at higher risk of developing diabetes.
This article published in June 2021 discussed two NIH-supported studies confirming SARS-CoV-2 can target and impair the body’s insulin-producing cells.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when beta cells in the pancreas don’t secrete enough insulin to allow the body to metabolize food optimally after a meal. As a result of this insulin insufficiency, blood glucose levels go up, the hallmark of diabetes.

There are currently 24 children hospitalized with COVID-19 at Dayton Children’s -- that’s 20 more than they saw in December 2021.
“We are experiencing a surge like we've ever had. All of our children's hospitals are experiencing this same problem, which is huge numbers of pediatric patients being admitted” said Dr. Adam Mezoff, chief medical officer at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Great work @acemonline SA team including @AWalterPerry organising tonight’s #COVID19 update with updates from Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide Image
Tips from Dr Andrew Cooke, St George:
* Tolerate uncertainty - lesson 1
* an iterative approach to determining hot/cold zones, PPE etc
* workshopped training to build muscle memory
* accessible, continually updated guidelines via internal website ImageImage
* getting used to proning; which patients qualify for HFNO
* Covid shuttle bus helped with ED flow for discharges from the ward/ED
* grief & disbelief when family members not allowed to visit
* stigma of being #COVID19 (+) delaying seeking care
* a lot of anxiety in patients ImageImage

Seither wieder Funkstille.

Wir haben jetzt übrigens wieder vergleichbare Inzidenzen!

Over the past week, there's been a lot of buzz about the #CovidVaccine and myocarditis. Some people have said some worrying things 😟

This has been a lot to process. To help, here's a thread on the essentials. (1)
Right now, there's pressure to decide how we should protect kids from #COVID. Pediatric cases are spiking as schools re-open, making up 26.8% of weekly cases in the US:… (2)
Kids are not at high risk for severe disease from #COVID. But as a demographic, severe outcomes do occur.

A small chance multiplied hundreds of thousands of times over means many will be hospitalized, and some will die (3).

We are officially back to getting crushed by #COVID, and for #pediatricians this wave feels *worse* in many ways. And as a pediatric hospitalist who has been a front-line COVID doctor for the entire pandemic, I’m going to share what I’ve seen the last 8 days on service. 1/
After many months of zero or few pediatric COVID cases, we are seeing infants, children, and teens with COVID pouring back into the hospital, more and more each day. These patients ranged in age from 2 weeks old to 17 years.
COVID admissions in our medical center are up 500% and currently 80% of cases in our hospital are due to the highly contagious Delta variant. I worry that the Delta variant, in addition to being more contagious, *may* also be more virulent in children.

Hard to say how disappointed I am In the @STLCounty council . As
..a physician

..a mom whose kids nearly died from #COVID #MISC

..someone too familiar with the consequences of #PoliticsInPublicHealth

As a CMO that has to send people home to quarantine
There’s more

.. The wife on an ICU doctor busting it, risking lots to save the unvaccinated & unmasked

.. a scientist and steward of public health

.. a constituant of the county

.. a peer reviewer of new scientific literature
.. a HUMAN BEING who thinks we need a little more in everyone’s interest and less of the “me me me”

What an interesting time we live in

To know that folks would refuse a mask even to save the masses, hell- even if it only saved a few…. And for what ? Political points
