#KashmirFiles: Let's talk about what happened in January 1990.
Governor Jagmohan’s first address that was broadcasted on TV & radio on Jan-20-1990 shocked everyone. In his address: "if anybody creates a law and order problem, meray haathon say aman ka patta khisak jaye ga."

Jagmohan threw away the cards of peace. Jan 20, 21 CRPF troops conducted widespread & warrantless house-to-house searches. Authorities claimed that the presence of several armed militants prompted the search operation. #KashmirFiles

However, none of over 400 persons who were dragged out of their homes into the biting cold of the night and arrested turned out to be a militant, neither was any weapon seized. #KashmirFiles

It was during this search operation molestations of women were made, something which had never happened before in the history of #Kashmir. And with this, the peace of Kashmir was shattered forever. The news of the molestation of women spread in Srinagar city. #KashmirFiles

‘Daily Alsafa’ on January 21, 1990. ‘Chotta Bazar Aur Guru Bazar Mein Changezi Dour Ki Yadein Taza’, read the headline. The daily reported that almost 1000 people were arrested. Women, children were dragged out of their beds resulting in chaos & tension in area. #KashmirFIles

Peaceful demonstrations were held throughout the valley against the atrocities committed by the CRPF in the different localities on Jan 21, 1990. One such procession was going on near Gawkadal, 1000s of peaceful protestors were demanding stringent action be taken against CRPF.

When the procession reached near GawKadal Chowk, the then DSP Kothibagh, Alla Baksh along with his team which was led by the CRPF personnel fired indiscriminately on the peaceful protestors in which 50 persons were killed on the spot and injured 250. #KashmirFIles

CRPF and police deliberately fired on the peaceful protestors on the head and chest with the intention to kill. Processions marched through almost every part of the city and a major one was from Rajbagh and Radio Colony Srinagar. #KashmirFiles

A CRPF personnel turned the barrel of his machine gun towards the protesting women. Rouf 21, the unsung hero, Sensing the intentions of the CRPF personnel took 32 bullets fired from a machine gun on his chest, saving many lives. #KashmirFiles

Another hero Farooq, a close friend of Rauf, also saved a number of women by standing in front of a CRPF man taking 10 bullets on his chest. #KashmirFiles

Despite the curfew, the protestors were not stopped from RajBagh where a large contingent of forces had been deployed, but to Kill at #GawKadal

Yes, you got that right. The incident (to have a massacre at Gaw Kadal) was planned by the then DSP Alla Baksh.

#GawKadalMassacre was a message to the Kashmiri pandits that what was in the kitty of Governor Jagmohan for #Kashmiri Muslims.

The #GawKadalMassacre left every Kashmiri in tears because they had never witnessed such kind of brutal bloodshed. It was a practical message for Pandits to leave the valley & it proved so because, from the other day, Kashmiri Pandits started migrating.

“I saw a truck full of bodies in the police control room." : Ghulam Rasool, assistant sub-inspector of J&K police.

"Policemen started howling and crying On seeing a truck full of bodies of innocent Muslim brethren." : ASI Ghulam Rasool.

CRPF personnel were furious with the policemen, threatened them with dire consequences if they didn't dispose bodies off immediately: ASI
"not dead" 3 injured inside the vehicle were screaming, rushed to hospitals, pretended to be dead to save themselves from being fired again.

More bodies reached PCR which were fished out of the river as hundreds of protesters jumped into the river to save themselves from CRPF bullets. But on that fateful day, the bullets of CRPF men chased protestors in d water too. Killed many: ASI Ghulam Rasool

In the aftermath of the #GawKadalMassacre, more demonstrations followed. In Jan-1990 alone, Indian forces have killed around 300 protesters. The #GawKadalMassacre proved to be a turning point in #Kashmir’s history. It became the catalyst that propelled into a mass upsurge.

In the History of Kashmir, January is known as Massacre Month. And Jagmohan is known as the Massacre Man who programmed Massacres like Gaw Kadal, Alamgari Bazar, Handwara, etc.

January Masscres changed the mindset of the people of #Kashmir towards India which we see every day since then. Thousands of young men, braving snowclad mountains and bullets of Indian soldiers, crossed the LoC into PaK to get arms training. #KashmirFiles

William Dalrymple, British writer and historian writes; As a young journalist when I arrived in Srinagar on 22-Jan 1990, day after the massacre. I went straight to the city hospital. “Every bed in the building was occupied, and the overflow lined the corridors." #KashmirFiles

One man, an educated, city engineer named Farooq Ahmed, described how after the firing, the CRPF walked slowly forward across the bridge. Finishing off those who were lying wounded on the ground. Dalrymple writes this in the “New York Review of Books” #KashmirFiles

The Indian govt banned foreign journalists from entering #Kashmir after the international press carried reports about the #GawKadalMassacre. When the ban was lifted in May1990, #Kashmir was soaked in blood as many more massacres of unarmed civilians had taken place. #KashmirFiles

It quickly became clear that the brutality of the forces had comprehensively radicalised the normally apolitical Kashmiris and turned a small-scale insurgency into a genuine popular movement. Dalrymple reports this on the #GawKadalMassacre and the aftermath. #KashmirFiles

The J&K police have closed the #GawKadalMassacre case and those involved in the massacre were declared ‘untraceable’.

Governor Jagmohan was suggested a television/radio broadcast of requests from hundreds of Muslims to their Pandit neighbors not to leave Kashmir, being rejected by Jagmohan. On the contrary, Jagmohan announced that the Govt cannot guarantee any safety of Pandits. #KashmirFiles

Yet Kashmiri Muslims are targeted for KPs migration. Logic? Plus, It was not only Pandits who migrated

yet India recognizes migrants as Pandits' exclusively.

In the 90s the total population of Kashmiri Pandits was around 300,000 of 100,000 plus migrated.
