What’s been happening This Week in Covid?

The schism between reality and policy grew even wider this week...

Omicron B.2 sent cases soaring and stock markets sinking!

#TheWeekInCovid
The US, Russia, Italy, and the UK continue to lead the ‘Covid Catastrophe’ League Table. Excluding Russia, this takes Covid deaths in these countries beyond WW2 civilian deaths.
As our grandparents faced conscription and war, our generation seems too precious to wear a simple face covering when out and about…apparently it’s more of a threat to liberty than death and disability. Yes, logic takes a serious hit this week too…
The US rapidly approaches the grim 1million Covid causalities mark. Indeed, it has surpassed this in estimated excess deaths. The US information war seems very real and very deadly. The fascists seem to be succeeding in culling their own. Logic continues to take a hit!
Russia, not content with allowing millions of their own people to die from a preventable disease, continue to indiscriminately shell cities and villages in Ukraine. Apparently pregnant women and children are more of a threat to Putin than a deadly, mutating infectious disease
Despite the onslaught, Ukrainians standing tall and somehow still managing to care enough about each other to wear masks when in the enclosed space of a bomb shelter!
Meanwhile, back in the UK, man-children continue to whine about wearing a mask during their 30 minute commute. [These will probably be the same folk who will be the first to surrender to a Russian invasion].
Apparently the guiding principle of many a maskphobic individual is ‘we are all going to die of something’…in other news, stupidity makes it onto a number of death certificates.
As UK Covid hospitalisations and deaths start to climb, Sajid Javid, the health secretary issued this very helpful advice,….”brace yourself” . After feeling clever predicting a surge in cases after the surge in cases, The UK government then proceed to remove all protections.
Apparently Johnson’s strategy is to tell the British public Covid’s over, we won, and Covid is now just like the flu, and then hope vaccine uptake will increase enough to help their vaccine-only strategy to be more successful. The UK now call this “Johnson-Logic”.
Of course, Covid then surged - not over -, the UK Government admitted defeat - didn’t win -, and more people died of Covid in one week than died of Flu in the whole of last year - yeah, not the flu. But apparently, they got the Big Calls right, according to an extremist newspaper
True to form, the UK continues it’s pandemic legacy of worst possible decisions at the worst possible times, further relaxing protective measures. Apparently women and children fleeing a war are too dangerous to gain refuge in the UK, but new Covid variants are more than...
welcome to hide among us, undetected, with anonymity intact.

It seems only Italy are trying to learn from the five previous waves of infection and realise ‘exit waves’ are usually just waves of new infections. This week Italy announce the legal mandatory requirement for all schools to have ventilation systems. Masks remain compulsory.
But beyond the lunacy of some western leadership, there is actual cause for concern as our more learned counterparts in Asia start to escalate Covid protections.
Omicron B2 - a gift from the ‘let it rip’ pandemic ‘strategy’ of the ‘advanced’ nations of the West - has now led to the manufacturing engine of the world to effectively lockdown 17m people.
Oddly, the very scientists and armchair pundits who sh@t the bed with the pioneering pandemic strategy of getting people infected to prevent them getting infected (logic cries), now praying for the world’s economic powerhouse of China to fail…
Meanwhile Hong Kong is paying the price for poor vaccine uptake. As hospitals fill, mortuaries overflow, and oxygen runs out - remember Omicron is mild(?) - statisticians squint at their computer screens wondering if there is a statistical glitch...
...accounting for the ‘unexpected’ and 'unforeseeable' massive surge in deaths following a massive surge cases from the most destructive infectious disease the planet has seen in at least 100 years.
Meanwhile, the UK removes all protections and monitoring, tell people it’s all over and then tell people to get vaccinated.
Perhaps though, the most astonishing news from this week, is the falling opinion polls of undoubtably one of the best world leaders over the last two years, New Zealand’s PM Arden. Apparently having the fastest economic recovery, highest employment rate in ten years,...
...lowest death rate in the world, and the least amount of time under any form of national restrictions than any other High Income Country, isn’t enough for a sizeable portion of the New Zealand public.
“Proof” that the death of logic is not part of the tsunami of Long Covid cases.

Armchair pundits, media moguls, and other nefarious folks, rub their hands at the prospect of derailing the glaring evidence of the very logic the world’s leading
clinicians and scientists have been screaming about since day 1: preventing infections until we have treatment’s and vaccines save lives and livelihoods!

Of course, the NZ (and much of Asia’s) response disproves the world view of many a libertarian....
For civilisation to be successful and remain civilised we do need a social contract and yes, a strong State beats a strong free market when it actually matters. Sorry, debate is over and history has already been written.

Johnson removed Covid protections to save his job.

The consequences are not only an increase in the chance of getting Covid for us all,...

...his decision has also led to a dramatically reduced vaccine uptake.

DEAR New Zealanders,

Have you lost your bloody minds?

Arden has taken you through the worst part of the pandemic with less pain and suffering than any of us thought possible. Instead of giving her (and her team) a medal and gratitude you are..

theguardian.com/world/2022/mar…
NZ is the thorn in the side of right-wing, libertarian ideology...the proof that a considered, state response to global threats are far, far superior to a 'free-market' response (look at the US!). They would love to see NZ fall apart...
NZ Covid legends!

To PM Arden (@jacindaardern)

From my colleagues and I, I thank you and your team. Yes, you have saved 10s of thousands of NZ lives and 100s of thousands livelihoods. But more, all future pandemics will be measured against your success and the amazing achievement of the NZ...

Much of the scientific community railed against a wide-reaching Financial Times article:

“Vaccines and Omicron mean Covid now less deadly than flu in England”

As a fact, it was a bold claim. In regards to journalistic duty, there are other questions.
🧵
ft.com/content/e26c93…
In fairness to the article itself, the authors took significant effort to emphasise that even with the same mortality risk as Flu (we will come to the accuracy of that later) the overall risk of Covid remains high.
Here they provide an estimate of 50% increase in winter deaths:
Indeed, reading the article through, one could have made a completely different headline:

“Despite Covid’s falling mortality risk it still remains the most dangerous infection in the UK.”

Now that Covid is over (🤦‍♂️) let's look at how the High Income Countries have performed.

▪️Covid deaths
▪️Excess deaths
▪️Mortality rates
▪️Vaccination Rates
▪️Loss of freedoms
▪️Economy.

How did your country do?

🧵
Total number of civilians lost to Covid.
This will likely be the measure most recorded in the history books.

Note the over ten-fold difference in deaths between those who suppressed the virus prior to vaccine and anti-viral treatments being available.
There are though other impacts of Covid defining success. A big one is the impact on other healthcare services. Difficult to measure in its totality but here is overall excess deaths....

This is how many people died who wouldn't have had Covid not appeared.

The Week In Covid.

March 8th 2021

A weekly summary of what's happening with Covid.

#TheWeekInCovid
While some world leaders try their best to convince their citizens that "Covid is Over", Covid remains the biggest killer of all infectious diseases worldwide.

➡️ 500K more deaths since 2022.
➡️➡️ 52K deaths reported in the last week...
A more detailed analysis carried out in the US (@cynthiaccox and co @KFF) showed Covid was the second leading cause of death in the US, even before Omicron hit in Dec '21

...and the leading cause of death in the 45-54 age group!!!

So, no, not a disease of the elderly!

Pandemic Mistakes
Part 3 of 10

One of the worst pandemic mistakes, IMO:

In the UK in April 2020, a nationwide directive to ration oxygen was issued.

Rationing oxygen, in the UK!

🧵

#PandemicMistakes
A bit of background:

1. For the vast majority of Covid patients, the lower part of the lungs are unaffected. Most symptoms come from the infection in the upper airways, but don't affect our ability to absorb oxygen.

2. Severe Covid is defined as the requirement for oxygen...
...this means the lower lungs are affected.

[Picture shows Severe Covid. Unique pattern in the very lower parts of the lungs. The red = inflamed. Blue = normal. Where it is red, the ability to transfer oxygen into the blood is reduced]
