New paper published in ⁦@bmj_latest⁩ : “Association between covid-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and risk of immune mediated neurological events: population based cohort and self-controlled case series analysis”. A 🧵 bmj.com/content/376/bm…
1) previous reports and research have suggested an association between some #CovidVaccines and immune neurological conditions including facial paralysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome. We had access to unique data to study this, and to research if #COVID19 itself can cause these
2) we studied data from Catalonia and the UK, including over 8 million vaccinated, 0.5m #covid19, & >14 million unvaccinated uninfected (historical data). We estimated rates of neuroimmune events post-vaccine and post-infection, and compared these to background (expected) rates
3) the rates of facial palsy, guillain-barre and encephalomyelitis post-vaccine were equivalent to expected, suggesting no association between any of the studied #CovidVaccines & these outcomes
4) however, rates post #COVID19 were 1/3, 3.5-fold and 6-fold higher than expected for facial palsy, GBS, and encephalomyelitis respectively
5) conclusion: we did not find an association between covid vaccines and neuroimmune conditions.. but it is likely that #COVID19 can cause some of these conditions
6) the study has limitations. Please read the whole paper. However, these data suggest, once more, that #COVID19 in the unvaccinated is far worse than #covidvaccines . Get vaccinated

Our study “Comparative effectiveness of the BNT162b2 vs ChAdOx1 vaccine against Covid-19” is available and awaiting feedback at ⁦@medrxivpreprint⁩ . A short 🧵 medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
1/3- We analysed 235,181 UK Biobank participants aged 50 years or older and vaccinated with one or two doses of BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1. Follow up run until 18/10/2021. IPW weighting was used to minimise confounding, & negative control outcomes to rule out residual bias
2/3 - RESULTS: Compared w ChAdOx1, BNT162b2 was associated with 30% lower risks of both SARS-CoV-2 infection and #COVID19 hospitalisation. Findings were consistent across several subgroups and persisted for at least six months, suggesting no differential waning between vaccines

Nuevo articulo publicado en @bmj_latest : "Associations of BNT162b2 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission and death with covid-19 in nursing homes and healthcare workers in Catalonia: prospective cohort study" .

Nou article al @bmj_latest "Associations of BNT162b2 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission and death with covid-19 in nursing homes and healthcare workers in Catalonia: prospective cohort study" .

New paper in @bmj_latest !! "Associations of BNT162b2 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection and hospital admission and death with covid-19 in nursing homes and healthcare workers in Catalonia: prospective cohort study" #COVID19Vaccines Plain English 🧵 bmj.com/content/374/bm…
1/6) We used routine health data from primary care and hospital records linked to lab tests and mortality data, and studied 28,456 nursing home residents, 26,170 nursing home staff, and 61,791 healthcare workers
2) NH residents were of special interest as they are most vulnerable but were under-represented in previous clinical trials. We followed participants for almost 6 months, and looked at the effect of vaccination against #COVID19 infection, hospitalization, and mortality
