Two news stories about the horrific abuse of Black girls highlight the intersection of racism and misogyny, and the ways Black girls are "adultified."
Please be aware that I'm not sharing pics but both incidents involve awful brutality.
A 10yo girl is in hospital with serious injuries after a man grabbed and punched her several times in the face and head, and dragged her several metres, as she was walking home from school with friends on Monday. Bystanders intervened & flagged down police cbc.ca/news/canada/mo…
"We are very, very shaken by stress," the girl's aunt, told reporters at the Montreal courthouse where the man appeared
"The reason we're here today is that we want to make sure that this monster will not be released...This man is a danger to the public."
“This truly shocking case is indicative of the adultification of Black children routinely taken by authorities."
A Black girl who was strip searched by police at school while on her period In 2020 has spoken of her trauma. thedailybeast.com/traumatized-ch…
In the middle of an exam, teachers accused her of "smelling like pot" and although a search of her bag and clothes revealed no drugs, they still called the police who stip searched her without contacting her family and with no one other than police present.
“Someone walked into the school, where I was supposed to feel safe, took me away from the people who were supposed to protect me and stripped me naked, while on my period,” Child Q said.
“This was not treated as a safeguarding issue but a criminal matter,” the girl’s mother said in the statement. “Professionals treated her as an adult. She was searched as an adult. Is it because of her skin? Her hair? Why her?”
“This truly shocking case is indicative of the adultification of Black children routinely taken by authorities,” family attorney Chanel Dolcy said. “It is unlikely that [the child] would have been treated in this humiliating and degrading way had she not been Black.”
According to a study published in 2017 by Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality, as early as age five, young Black girls in the United States of America are viewed less as children and more like adults when it comes to discipline in schools. cnn.com/2017/06/28/hea…
“If our public systems, such as schools and the juvenile justice system, view black girls as older and less innocent, they may be targeted for unfair treatment in ways that effectively erase their childhood,” Rebecca Epstein, lead author of the report.

Had my 1st public fight in ages last night and wow am I foul mouthed! And woe anyone who thinks they can talk about me & my dinner companion loud enough for me to hear and think I won’t educate them in just how foul mouthed. I enjoyed iterations of “Fuck” I yelled at this person
As @rerutled, my dinner companion can tell you, she was certainly not expecting it. I actually asked her, before I unleashed,"Do you have a problem?" and she actually said "Yes, I do." And that was her first mistake of the night because I taught what an actual problem with me was
As you can see, her dinner companion left because she couldn't take fuckface up there in the video anymore and a neighbouring table also told her to shut up.
Give me a racist who goes low with me and I'll show you just how utterly into the gutter I'll take them, and then more.
The whiteness fueling who deserves to be saved in #UcraniaRussia war has compounded the whiteness of who deserves to be saved in the pandemic: white people matter the most.
And not even all white people, equally. As Bosnian Muslims have pointed out–they were the “wrong” kind of white Europeans.
All these white Europeans saying war happens "over there" not "here" clearly ignore Bosnia. Diana, Williams' mother visited Bosnia feministgiant.com/p/essay-life-l…
Yesterday, Mona and the Menopause hit an ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME phase of the adventure. She put on blue eyeliner, red lipstick & other colours, and after recording solidarity message for Iranian #MeToo movement, took some THC & started rewatching The Sopranos 📷 @rerutled
If you are on the Menopause Adventure, consider supporting the anthology I'm editing for @unbounders: pledge (like pre-ordering a book with rewards) or just share the link. There is a lot happening right now yes, and menopause is too, for many people unbound.com/books/bloody-h…
With an estimated 1.5 billion people who will experience menopause by 2025, who is speaking about menopause and who are the headlines targeting? It depends on where you are and who you are. wellandgood.com/fitness-wellne…
The greatest & most persistent gender gap was seen in employment & uncompensated labour.
"In every part of the world, women experienced higher rates of employment loss than men since the start of pandemic."
26% of women reported loss of work vs 20% of men globally, Sept 2021
"Women and girls were also more likely to drop out of school and more likely to report an increase in gender-based violence than men and boys." #COVID19
After antics at #SOTU, I remind you the predictably-craven GOP leadership initially backed Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert’s male GOP opponents because party leaders thought the two women were extremists who did not stand a chance in primaries. feministgiant.com/p/a-white-supr…
MTG was dangerous & vile long before she was elected but because much of her vileness was directed at Muslims, Black people, and Jews, the GOP shrugged & carried on being craven shits they are, happy to throw their weight behind anyone who brings them votes feministgiant.com/p/if-marjorie-…
MTG & Boebert, like Trump, are not aberrations. They are fruition of GOP’s reliance on race, gender, and religion to keep white people in several parts of the U.S. - including the South - resolutely Republican and increasingly right wing. cbsnews.com/news/marjorie-…
After Roman Abramovich sells Chelsea, will Saudi and Emirati ownership of other football clubs then come under scrutiny? Fuck Putin. Yes. And also fuck autocrats and autocracy everywhere. #UkraineRussiaWar
I was ready to end my support of Manchester United when Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman expressed interest in buying the club. There are hideous amounts of money in modern football and horrendous ownership tied to that money. #Abramovich#Chelsea#UkraineRussiaWar
The #UkraineRussiaWar has brought up so many double and triple standards over whose lives matter, which autocracies must be fought, often by the very democracies that prop up other autocracies. And some of us are at the intersections of all this hypocrisy.
