As the Provincial representative for the Beltline, I’ve been hearing from constituents on the impacts of the long-running Saturday rallies in our community.

Here's some of what I've heard (identities removed for safety)👇🏼

🧵 1/20 #ableg #yyc #yycbeltline globalnews.ca/news/8661504/c…
First, a warning: this thread contains some highly disturbing content. 2/
“We’re unable to live our lives in the Beltline community where we own our home," one resident writes. "We cannot leave our home on weekends by car for fear of getting stuck... We can’t leave on foot for fear of getting stuck in their foot marches.” 3/
This constituent continues, “Last week I was called a child abuser and was threatened to be raped.” 4/
"I was unable to get to urgent care last weekend after my wife cut her hand with a knife," one constituent wrote to me. "I was held up by CPS officers and they watched as her blood dripped through the cloth and only after they had all walked past 4th st would he let me cross.” 5/
Another constituent writes, "They leave the park littered with garbage, signs, and stickers all over the benches and light poles in the area. Additionally, I have been yelled at several times for wearing a mask. I do not feel safe walking my dog on Saturdays." 6/
"It has got to the point where I need to leave my own community every Saturday just to avoid the people that come downtown to participate," one resident says. "The amount of racism and disrespect shown to our fellow community members makes me quite angry." 7/
Another writes, "Like most residents of the area, I avoid 4th Street & 17th Avenue every Saturday afternoon." 8/
And another writes, "I feel feel unsafe in my own neighbourhood." 9/
One person says they saw "a man was blocking a cross walk full of pedestrians in a green convertable mustang with 2 large dogs revving his engine at people trying to cross and firing an airhorn at pedestrians from very close distance." 10/
One person who was escorting children reported that they were accosted by a man who shouted that it was child abuse to have children wearing masks. 11/
A business told me that their customers have been verbally attacked while sitting on their patio. Now they close the patio until 4 pm - that’s about $6,000 in revenue that they lose every Saturday. 12/
Another business reports monthly losses of up to $50,000 thanks to the demonstration. 13/
One shop reports that protesters have previously set up outside the shop door and yelled at anyone wearing a mask who wanted to go in. Customers just stopped coming. 14/
That shop reports revenue reductions of up to 36% compared to normal Saturdays, usually their busiest day of the week. Long-term staff have left because of the abuse. 15/
Arts groups have had to cancel planned and permitted events for Memorial Park. 16/
Staff in some businesses have been abused so badly that the owners won’t ask them to work on Saturday. They cover the shifts themselves. 17/
One business owner hasn’t been able to open a new location on Saturdays because of the protests. 18/
We know that healthcare workers have been taunted and harassed as they go to work at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre. Some are scared to show up for their shift or to go to their car when it’s time to go home, because the abuse has been so awful. 19/ calgaryherald.com/news/local-new…
That is just a sample of what I've heard. Residents and businesses are dealing with this chaos every Saturday. It has to stop.

It's time for @jkenney, @shandro and the UCP government to do more to ensure the safety of this wonderful community. #ableg #yyc #yycbeltline 🧵 20/20

Alberta’s NDP fully supports the right to protest. However, as MLA for Calgary-Buffalo I feel a duty to speak out against the challenges that my constituents have been facing in recent months.

Watch my video and read my full statement below 🧵 1/7 #yyc @4thStreetYYC @yycbeltline
We have seen large demonstrations occupying whole streets in the Beltline neighbourhood. Traffic has been unable to pass and many businesses have been forced to close, costing them much-needed revenue. 2/ #yyc
Some people attending these rallies have carried hateful signs or symbols and there have been reports of harassment. I've heard from constituents who have been intimidated and verbally abused. 3/

Alberta’s NDP is calling on the UCP government to reverse its decision to drive up property taxes for Albertans by increasing municipal borrowing costs.

Here's my statement 👇🏼

🧵 #ableg 1/9
Albertans are already struggling to make ends meet as they pay more for income tax, more property tax, more school fees, more tuition, more interest on student debt, more camping fees, more for auto insurance and more for utilities. #ableg 2/
Increasing borrowing rates for municipalities will further download costs onto Albertans and make monthly bills even more punishing. 3/

I'm appalled by @jkenney's latest baseless attack on teachers. The truth is, this is a calculated move from a Premier who has been out to destroy public education from the start. #ableg #abed

Here's a brief history 👇🏼 🧵 1/21 calgary.ctvnews.ca/public-educati…
He began by forcing school boards to remove the word “public” from their name.

The smile in this picture is the smile of a man who thinks he can tear down public education. 🧵 2/ #ableg #abed cbc.ca/news/canada/ca…
The UCP's 2019 budget followed that by gutting Education funding. They failed to provide a single dollar to cover the extra *15,000* students entering schools. Not one dollar.

And that after promising to fund enrollment growth. A big lie. 3/ #abed #ableg edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/…

Here's a short history of #COVID19AB in quotes from @jkenney, UCP MLAs and staff.

Spoiler: from consistently undermining the threat, to spreading vaccine misinformation, to declaring "Best Summer Ever,"™️ they have got this wrong at every. single. stage.

🧵 THREAD 1/19 #ableg
1. On 27 May 2020, @jkenney called COVID-19 “an influenza that does not generally threaten life apart from the most elderly.”

2. “One thing I think we’re learning epidemiologically is that (homeless) population has a very high level of immune resistance, of immunity, and resilience against an influenza of this nature.”

In advance of @jkenney's 6 p.m. press conference about his botched pandemic response, let's take stock of his disastrous record.

Spoiler: from the start, his entire approach to #COVID19AB has been defined by cruelty and incompetence. #ableg THREAD 🧵 1/24 macleans.ca/opinion/what-j…
He began by laying off 20,000+ education workers.

Seriously. One of his first actions was ensuring that an additional 20,000+ Albertans had to worry about paying rent, putting food on the table, buying clothes for their kids, etc., etc.

Cruel #ableg 2/24 calgaryherald.com/opinion/braid-…
Then he gave himself and his Ministers sweeping new powers with Bill 10 (and then subverted a review of that decision). #ableg 3/24 calgaryherald.com/opinion/corbel…

If you're wondering why Alberta teachers overwhelmingly have no confidence in the Education Minister, here is a brief history of @AdrianaLaGrange's tenure.

Spoiler: she has been out to destroy public education from the start.
